Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
Waverly was up 14-10 after one.
The Tigers looked like an entirely different team in the 2nd quarter.
Waverly finally calls a timeout with around 1:00 minute to play in the half but by that time were down 11. They come out of the timeout and switch to the 1-3-1 but Burg holds the ball for the last shot and go up 13 at the break.
Waverly had a great 3rd quarter and cut the lead to I thinkk 5 at the end of 3.
Waverly was able to get it to 1 in the 4th and had many, many chances to take the lead but couldn't cash in.
Kelly only played a couple minutes in the 2nd quarter and Robertson wasn't utilized as much as in the Chilly game for some reason.
Radio said Martin lead the game with 27.
The orange & black Tigers have to shake this one off and get ready for the Tigers of Greenfield McClain. At 13-7 this Tiger group has a better record than the 79/80 team that put together a great tourny run all the way to the regional final, knocking off ranked opponents along the way.

Great win by Wheelersburg. Congratulations to "both" teams in this game. I've really enjoyed watching this conference this year. What a great season to watch the SOC2. I hope both these teams put a big run in the tourney starting Monday. Go SOC. Kick butt!

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
The Pirates started out slow in this one and were down the entire 1st quarter and part of the 2nd before they caught on fire and went on an 18-0 run to end the half. They were down 18-13 and Waverly was having their way with the Burg. Kretzer had hit a couple of threes and they were controling the game until Craigmiles hit a couple of huge threes and then they were off and running. Kemper ended the run with a put back basket just as time expired to give the Pirates a 13 point lead at the half 31-18. Waverly started out the second half scoring the first 6 points to cut the Burgs lead to 7 and would outscore the Burg by 10 to go into the 4th trailing by 3 points. They got as close as 1 point in the 4th, but a couple of great almost full court passes for easy layups kept the Pirates in control. Great game by the Pirates and a huge win to end the regular season at 15-5 and a solid 2nd place finish in the SOC II.
On a side note, the Burgs cheer block was also on fire tonight. Aaron White leading the entire cheer block was awesome. It really got the crowd going. Also, Josiah Whitely playing the National Anthem on guitar before the game was incredible. It was like Hendrix was there. lol
Also, just curious, how many blocked shots did Andy Stegman end up with? Does anyone keep track of those. I'd day he had close to 10.
Great win Pirates. Now go and get ready for Rock Hill in the tourney.

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
I made the trip over to watch this one and let me say it was a great game. It was exciting from the opening tip-off to the end, just when you think Burg might blow them out- Waverly would come back and actually had the ball in the fourth quarter only trailing by one and a chance to take the lead.
When you start off well and then let a team charge back and run off what seemed like 20 unanswered points and you call a timeout with about one minute left in the half- just save it - especially when you come out in a 1-3-1 and let them hold the ball for the last 60 seconds only to shoot the last shot and score- what in the world was the logic behind that?
Waverly is a team that never seems to drive the lane and dish the ball to an open player-- when you drive the lane a lot of stuff happens and this creates movement on offense, something that Waverly struggled with during the big Pirate run!
What about Kretzer- started off hot- then seemed to stand a lot on offense- where were the screens???? Listen, this kid is a shooter and he needs open looks.
Tigers 2010- you said Kelly only played a little bit and Robertson played little too.. I was able to see Waverly at Valley and Kelly led a comeback in the 4th quarter that I thought was pretty good considering his ability to handle pressure with little or no turnovers- which allowed the rest of the offense to get settled in- then last night he was not a contributor at all-? Then you hear all about Ryan Robertson being the spark in the Chilly game and he is big and strong and seemed to play tough on the floor and last night he was a non-factor-? This is not up to fans to question because we don't know how these two or the others who don't play work in practice.
In the lobby after the game Waverly people were complaining about the officicals but I thought it was called fairly good- although coach Robertson was correct when a call was made late in the game by an official 65 feet away from the action while the other officials were a lot closer. I do think that he does a very nice job working officials. At one time in the second half Burg had 7 team fouls and Waverly had 2- it was not a "homer game"
Lundin had inside position countless times and didn't get many looks. He rebounded the ball well. Martin got a lot of put backs and really plays hard- he is very tough in the paint, but just think how open he would be in the paint if Lundin was a threat to score too.
On the bright side for you Tiger fans-- I don't think this would go down as one of your better played games and certianly not a very good coached game and you still only lost by 5 on the road in a tough environment. How bad did they beat you the first time? You are a lot better than before! I also would point out Waverly kids play very hard and conduct themselves well.
If I were coaching they would not be a team I would want to play in the tourneys- and if the ball bounces in favor of the Tigers I think they will play a couple games in the convo.
Shankweiler really played well at the point for Burg- he was shooting well and passing the ball well. Craigmiles only had six points but his two three's were huge for the Burg. Stegman was really big in the later part of the game and seemed to own the paint and hit some big shots.
Burg is just really coached well and they will have a nice tourney run and will build for next year. They will be in a three-team dog fight next year with Oak Hill and Valley to win the league. I would be careful ruling out the Tigers next year I mean there wasn't many people who thought they would win 13 games.
Good luck to both teams in the remainder of the season.

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
Outsider, I really don't think Tiger fans were upset with the Ref's maybe a call or two but I didn't hear much about it- but the topic about the timeout not being called until a minute to go in the first half and to come out in the 1-3-1 to end the half might have been discussed in the lobby, in the parking lot, and in the restaurant's on the way home. It seemed to me that they allowed the Burg run to go forever.
But thats why the coaches get paid the big bucks so stupid people like us can sat around and talk about it afterwards.
I agree about our kids conducting themselves well on the floor- this group of basketball players are without a doubt a wonderful group of young men! Waverly should be very proud of them and the season they have had, and for what they are going to do in the tourney.

Just for the record, it was only a 16 point run. Waverly scored to go up 18-15 and then Wheelersburg ran off 16 points to lead 31-18 at half. Some times math...LOL.
I had Andy with a season high 8 blocks.

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
Last night was a huge win for the Pirates. Burg, once again played very good, aggressive defense. The Tigers dug themselves a deep hole in the second quarter by only scoring 4 points. To their credit the Tigers made a comback by riding the back of Harrison Martin. Why this kid does not have the ball in his hand more is beyond me??? Burg maintained their composure and showed everyone why Tom Barrick and Ken Massie are two of the best coach's around IMO.

Alabama Mike, Martin does get the ball a lot, but could get more looks with a good entry pass in the paint... not dribbling the ball up the floor - he is a work horse in the paint and a very good one at that- a point guard he is not- but you have to love the kids effort. You have to wonder if all that work getting the ball up the court takes a lot out of the kid because he missed some bunnies late when he just looked tired.
He scored a lot of points against a good defense.

I can actually add. lol
I figured Andy had close to 10 blocks and 8 is pretty close.

Just how many air balls did Roback shoot that Martin was in just the right position to get and put back for easy points? lol If you could count those as assists Roback would have had double figures in assists last night. lol

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
Martin is one of those kids with that quality of just being in the right place at the right time on a basketball court, the kid can play and no he isnt a point guard but thats what we have to do to get the ball over center court.
And who knows why Ryan R didnt get minutes last night maybe he played too well the last 2 games cut into other kids minutes maybe.
Baseball season is almost here and Coach Noble wont be as shy about throwing this kid out there, he will be on the mound as often as he can throw him, burg didnt get to see much of him in basketball but they will get their fill of him on the diamond i suspect.
Good Game Burg

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
No major problems with the officials, a few missed calls here and there but this one is one the Tigers could have won. I didn't hear anyone complaining about the calls, just the 2nd period mind laps that got the Tigers in a deep hole.
Many good points from posters about Waverly but as was stated, that's why the coaches get the big bucks.

He had a ton of points off missed shots but why are they not running him off screens or using quick hitters with him? This kid is the best player on the Waverly team by far. The best player has to have the ball.

Re: WAVERLY AT WHEELERSBURG
Alabama Mike,
I agree with you 100%. During the Chilly/Waverly game, I counted 2 sets ran for Martin. One on an underdeath inbounds and the other was a 1-4 set that gave him a clear out. Other then that he just goes about his business and scores.
That said, it surprises me that even though he is just a soph, he does not get more ink for 1st team All-SOC in the thread that is up and running. 20 points per night all but guaranteed.
