PEDRO — Maybe the South Point Lady Pointers don’t know a lot about physics, but they know how to convert defensive energy into points.
The Lady Pointers increased their defensive energy after the first quarter and finished the game with 22 steals as they rolled past the Fairland Lady Dragons 82-35 on Saturday to win the Division III sectional tournament.
Fairland stayed close to the heavily-favored Lady Pointers in the first quarter as they trailed 16-14 late and 24-16 at the end of the quarter.
But 11 second quarter turnovers ignited South Point’s offense and they outscored the Lady Dragons 20-6 to take a 44-22 lead.
“In the first quarter (Fairland) changed up some things defensively to start the game,†said Adams. “We started getting out on defense and forcing turnovers and we were able to convert them into layups.â€
Jalynn Bradburn had 20 points to lead four Lady Pointers in double figures. Allison Mitchell had 19 points and nine rebounds while Kayla Fletcher scored 12 points to go with five steals and Ericka Leighty added 11 points. Tinesha Taylor finished with nine points and six boards.
Adams said another key to the win was a 38-31 rebound advantage.
“We weren’t rebounding early, but then we started to rebound and things started to change in our favor,†said Adams.
A layup by Emily McMaster had the Lady Dragons down just 16-14 at the 1:21 mark, but Mitchell scored 10 points in the quarter to help give South Point the lead.
“Mitchell has been coming on the last few games. She’s another weapon for us,†said Adams.
After Fairland got within 19-16 on a layup by Mackenzie Rucker in the first quarter, South Point outscored Fairland 25-6 the rest of the half.
Bradburn hit a 3-pointer, Fletcher had a layup, and Bradburn drained another trey to begin the second half as the lead ballooned to 52-22 and the Lady Pointers were never headed.
South Point (19-2) will play in the district semifinals at 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Waverly downtown arena.
Fairland (9-13) was led by Lauren Phillips with 10 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Fulks also had eight rebounds and Rucker handed out three assists.
