split session at waverly..bad idea!
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
It seems like times are changing. Since Waverly built the downtown gym, that has been THE place to watch a high school game and now the Convo seems to be teaching Waverly a lesson on how to run an event. I love Waverly's gym but I like that fact that I can go to the Convo and watch multiple games on one admission. I wouldn't be shocked to see Waverly be phased out to the Convo in a short amount of years.
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
What are you talking about? The sectional tournament will never be held at the Convo. The Convo has limited time available as it is, why do you think they make us play on Sunday? Sectional will always be at HS gyms. I would guess as more new gyms are built the Districts may also end up at local HS gyms.

I think the Convo is also a great place to watch high school basketball but esp after the finals...it does take away from the "community" aspect that are a big part of a lot of these teams and a huge part of high school basketball. There's no opportunity to come out on the floor and celebrate with the kids. That's the only down side I see, but I agree, having to clear the gym at Waverly and buy another ticket to see another game is ridiculous.

Man on the Mic - You think the sectional will be moved to OU? From what I hear OU would like to get rid of all of it.
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
Not sure if any of you were at Waverly for Saturday's games but there is no way you could have got all the people in there from all 4 teams. Valley, ZT, Peebles all brought big crowds and Westfall crowd was decent. Add in the fans who were there to just watch and there would have been alot of people left standing out in the lobby watching on the big screen. I'm not sure if the state mandates split sessions on championship days but it was the right decision on this day in particular.
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
I agree they have to clear the gym. On Friday night, there is no way all the fans could have got in for the second game either.
I also think that OU would be thrilled to get rid of all the high school games. They continue to do it for publicity sake! Imagine if they would flat out say get out to all the high school games, they would lose a lot of respect with people in the area and that is not a good thing for a university.
I think having games on a Sunday is not a good idea. I wouldn't mind seeing games be played at a nice sized high school gym too. The atmosphere would be better. I know the atmosphere at Waverly Friday during the NA game was amazing! That is what high school basketball is all about!

Not sure where you guys are hearing that OHIO University wants to get rid of the High School games? Ohio has actually been EXPANDING the H.S. Schedule, getting into Volleyball Regionals, Girls District Finals, brought DIV boys Regionals back. Think about this Ohio Athletics makes concessions in scheduling their own games to bring this event about and could easily not make these accomodations.
You really need to examine your sources before you make such uninformed comments!
As for games on Sundays, that is done to get the girls into the Convo, and all these kids and families play youth games on Sundays for years!

Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
Even with Concessions and Parking there is no way OU makes much money on these events. It is about publicity. They know they draw a large amount of students from Southeastern Ohio and do not want to make potential students angry.
I love games at the Convo so I hope they keep them forever!

Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
Ohio athletics makes more money off HS events in parking and concessions than all their events combined. The games bring more prospective students to campus than anything else. And the OHSAA rental fees are 90% of bookings for the buiulding. In all the games pump 80K + directly to Ohio Athletics and the prepherial money is in the 100's of thousands.

Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
FYI The Southeast Ohio District makes all sectional finals split session it is not a decision made by Waverly or any other host school. As far as the convo i see both points but the electric in the crowd @ Waverly on friday i will take that everytime. As said on WKKJ Waverly's downtown gym is a jewel for all HS gyms in southern Ohio. not bad for a gym built in 1972. Back to getting people out of gym it was done very well in my opinion. Kudos to Bo Arnett and event staff

Exactly. And it isn't a bad public relations move either!!!!!!!
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
You think 100K is alot of money to a Division 1 College athletic dept.
That would be a drop in the bucket.

Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
I wasn't at Waverly Friday night to witness any of the problems that have a few of you so upset but Saturday night went very smooth. I was at Southeastern High School and guess what, they have split sessions as well. And guess what, it took a while to get out of there. Fans for game 2 lined up in the hallway while we were trying to exit the same doors. Did we get on here complaining and crying around?
Did we get on here complaining about the traffic trying to get onto Rt. 50 after the game? No, we didn't.
Waverly or Southeastern or any other host school does NOT decide on split sessions. That is done by the Southeast Board, as has been mentioned already.
The atmosphere is great in these settings and all in all the sectionals are run very well (at least at Waverly and Southeastern).
Someone mentioned District games being played on Sunday at the Convo because the girls are playing there this year. If I remember correctly there were Sunday games last year and the girls did not play there. Try another reason.

HBK, a 100K is a drop in the bucket for the overall budget, however that budget is 80% subsidsed by State Funds and Donations. The Revenue Stream at Ohio Athletics is very small, and any infusion of 100K is very important. Once again I ask where are your sources that says Ohio University is trying to get rid of the games? Me, I speak first hand about the finances of both the Tournaments and Ohio Athletics.
To the poster on the PR move of having the games in the Convo, you are correct, however Ohio University makes decisions based on more than PR, and they have embraced the tournaments and have been making a solid committment. Although there are times they must make decisions based on what is best for their programs and departments.
And Ohio University is not going to take any Sectional Games from Waverly. In the future, Ohio may lose a game here and there because of scheduling, like when the MAC Wrestling tournament was hosted by OHIO and they had to split up the DII games.

I guess at this point the horse is dead. I go with a big who cares. Just tell people where the games are and they will show up.
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
Just my two cents because I was one of those fans that stood in line to wait for the second game on Friday at waverly, however the only thing I really minded was the fact that it was freezing!
I completly understand why this happens, this is not something that Waverly athletic deparment decides to do to piss people off, this is OHSAA at its best. They do this to make money, yes, but they also do this because it takes time to cut the nets down and lets the local athletic department and boosters get ready for the next game.
Now in my opinion, which has already been said, is the OHSAA needs to make more time in between games. Instead of 6 and 8:30, why not do 5 and 8:30? This wasy people could leave the first game, go get a bite to eat (which brings in more money for the local businesses) and then come back and watch the next game. This would do away with long lines outsite and also free up some better parking spots?
And as for the CONVO, it would be near impossible to make fans leave after every game in there, the place is so big it would take 2 days to have 4 games if they did this.

Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
Bobbyk the only problem with having games start at 5 is people work through the week. Alot of the players in these games are juniors and senior and to miss your childs last game or at least part of it would be disturbing to me. 6 and 9pm may work but there again is 9pm to late not sure if there is a answer. I see your point though and agree to a point just not on times.
Re: split session at waverly..bad idea!
There is a girls district final game at the convo scheduled for 9:00p.m. and that's a Saturday night. I see nothing wrong with a 9:00p.m. game on Friday night.
