I would agree on 2 out of the 3 you mentioned. I feel that an effective coach must first and foremost be a good role model.

Not all parents, or players have a rotten attitude. Yes, it is clear that some do.
But let's not put all the parents and players in the same category. I think that the young men, who stayed put forth their best effort to win, and get better. They are the ones that went to practice. They are the ones that did'nt disrupt during practice. And they are the ones that played when they was asked to play, with no questions. Like I said in a previous post, Coach Smith made it thru the hardest part. Now the next coach will have to do the same. And I also know that pep rallies don't win ballgames. But if you can get the students behind the team, it can absolutley motivate the team. It would be nice to have huge student section every ballgame.
And let's not try to sugarcoat anything, our board could'nt care less about our athletics. And if you don't agree with this, you have neither went to West, or had a child go to West.

I think someone would have to be VERY desperate to even apply for this job. I mean they have ran off three coaches in TWO years! Yes I agree that some parents are to blame, but I blame more on the people in charge for having NO school spirit!!! The LAST thing on the super's list is athletics, I have no idea how the football team has done so well. My hat's off to Coach Triplett! Most of the board member are so scared of her that they do WHATEVER she says, its more like a dictatorship rather than a school board. She needs to be reminded who pays for that school and it is NOT her. I hope that whoever comes in will stand up to the administration and have some DISCIPLINE with the kids. They have a good group of kids coming up, if they stay with it!!!

I think that west went wrong with hiring coach smith in the first place. When coach kitchen applied for the job after he took over when coach gibson quit the team done really well and i thought would have been hired for sure.

You know i probably should not have commented on this topic but after reading this topic i can't help but think that this thing with the kids quitting starts at a much younger age and the parents letting them do it. It seems that when they get older the parents have no control of the children because of the lack of discipline at a younger age. No i am not saying that these parents are bad parents but what i am saying is that if you are reading this and you have young children don't let them quit once they have started something. I have brought my children up that way and was raised that way and it will certainly make them think about not quitting and sticking it out. ;-)

My kids are young still, but the main rule before they do anything at school or in sports is if you start it, you finish it.

Exactly! That's the way I was brought up and I know most of my cousins were brought up that way too. I won't force my kid to play any sport or participate in any activity but she will finish the season out of any sport or activity that she starts.

me personally would like to see the school hire a graduate of portsmouth west that is in coaching basketball. 1. Travis Bradford 2. Tyson Phillips 3. Jason Hurd
i believe that these three will have the heart and passion to try and turn the west basketball program around at the school where they played and graduated at. Getting coaches from the outside hasnt worked and this might work then again it might not work but i think they will have more support from the parents and community since they are west people

It doesnt matter where they are from- barrick wasnt from the burg- kids bought into it community backed him- love him and his family now look what he has done for several years now. Its about parent and community support. I am not saying our programs are better than anyone elses but our community comes out for all of the sports programs ,when we are playing strong they are there when we are playing bad they are there.

West needs to hire someone from outside of the system. What we have done here for years has not worked. Why in the world would we want someone from West doing the some ol' things again? Lets get someone without any ties to West( i.e. Coach Triplett in football) to come in here and change the culture of our basketball program.
The first thing that needs to be done is a revamping of the pee wee system. We need to quit letting mommy and daddy run the show at this level and this will prevent them from trying to run the show at the varsity level. The varsity coach needs to run the pee wee and teach the coaches how to teach the funamentals. This is not being done now. Its all about winning All-Star games now. Things will not change until this happens.

I agree we need someone from outside of the system with a strong backbone. We need someone with DISCIPLINE! I hate it when players quit because things aren't going their way...i think if they quit they shouldn't be allowed to play the next sport, or try out for next year. That would put a stop to it. SSU Grad...things are changing at the pee wee level. Coach Smith tried to get everyone on the same page. He held a coach's clinic at the begining with all of the pee wee coaches showing drills and plays that could be run...he tried. And who do you expect to coach at the pee wee level besides the parents? We just need to find the RIGHT parent coaches. Brian Howard has done a fabulous job at the pee wee level and it's only going to get better! Look at the Jr High...great things are happening. Those coaches know what needs to be done, and they are running the pee wee program next year! I just hope administration and the West Side community supports the next coach...someone like Bobby Knight!

Heard that Coach Bradford isn't interested. I can't say I blame him. Although, it would be nice for him to come home. I don't know how good my sources are. But, it sounds like Coach Kitchen has the best shot. We need the school board to step up, and quit this carousel with are coaches.

There is a world of difference in practices when it comes to Kitchen. He has discipline, they all like him at West (Kids). Hire Kitchen!

Oh yes, definitely hire someone because the kids like him. Are you serious!? Typical...I don't know why I'm surprised about anything anymore.
