Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
Is South Gallia in a conference now or do they play as an independent and didn't they originally combine every school (Southwestern, North Gallia, Kyger Creek and Hannan Trace) in Gallia county except for Gallipolis to form River Valley ? I guess the travel was too much and they combined Southwestern and Hannan Trace's old districts since they're on the southern end of the county if my thinking is correct ? Just asking because I'm a little confused as to what they did.

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
In 1992 Hannan Trace, North Gallia and Southwestern high schools were closed and all the students were sent to Kyger Creek, which was renamed River Valley. The idea was not a bad idea but the location in one corner of the county presented problems. Many students left the county system and went to other schools. Some students were traveling over 40 miles one way to school. The closing of the schools ended the SVAC and left Eastern, Southern, Oak Hill, and Symmes Valley looking for leagues. In 1996 Hannan Trace was reopened as South Gallia with the Hannan Trace area and part of the Southwestern area going there.
South Gallia has been and independent since the building opened.

I never understood why they didn't let them in 7 years ago either. They let Western in, the drive for a game from Western to Symmes Valley is about 2 hrs. I can see not admitting South Gallia, 3 hrs on a bus is a pretty good drive for a jr high game, Western to South Gallia.
I agree with Hammer, anyone know the vote count?

Junior High they wouldn't have to play the schools could try and find another school for those games as I do not think all the SOC I schools even play each other in junior high basketball.
Honestly the smart move would be for South Gallia to try and join on their own and I think they would have a better shot at getting in. Going in with Portsmouth in a combination hurt them I think.

Quote from the article.....
I hope Portsmouth is able to eventually join the SOC. It is clear Portsmouth wants to be there and I don't see why they should be denied when PHS is no larger than most other SOC II schools.
For the time being, I wonder if Portsmouth will stay in the SEOAL or go independant again?
"I expressed to (SOC secretary) Dave (Frantz) that we appreciate everything they've done for us," Portsmouth Athletic Director Joe Albrecht said. "In the future if the invitation is there, we would accept. When they're ready we'll be waiting for them."

South Gallia should be in the SOC I. They already play all of the schools in the SOC I now. The only other option for South Gallia would be the TVC Hocking, in which South Gallia also currently plays the majority of those schools. However, I think distance wise, South Gallia is closer to most SOC I schools than TVC Hocking schools. But realisticly, those are the only two leagues available to South Gallia based on their geographical location.

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
I think South Gallia has tried 6 or 7 times since the school opened in 1996. I think they realize that they are not going to get into the SOC but they hope to keep the relationships they have with the SOC I schools that they play. Their options are not many as far as leagues and with the TVC the same issues that SOC schools have issue with South Gallia has the same with the TVC-travel distance to some schools. SG will stay and independent and go from there-have been independent now for 13 years.

who makes up the final vote? the AD's ,the coaches? i think these votes should be made public

I read on here, and was told by one of the AD's of a TVC school that South Gallia basically turned down the TVC. According to that person SG came in with some demands that the other schools in the Hocking division refused to meet. The feeling was, according to my source, that SG figured if they made the demands and got them great, and if they didn't great too. That is just what I was told.

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
Portsmouth AD Joe Albrecht stated in the paper that Portsmouth is going to stay in the SEOAL......which now means on a long term basis since it will quite a while before PHS applies again.......I think I read that it has been 7 years since PHS's last rejection slip........so I would say that the Trojans just need to focus on getting our athletic program in better shape to compete in the SEOAL.........
As a fan, I enjoy the competition in the SEOAL.......but from the kids standpoint, it puts them in a tough situation because PHS has not proven that it can consistently compete in the league......numbers do make a difference........what was frustrating this past season was that Portsmouth went 5-0 vs. the SOC in boys basketball, and 3-10 in the SEOAL......playing in the SEOAL week in and week has been a real grind for our kids.........
But we need not feel sorry for ourselves.......just focus on getting better, and meeting the challenges that the SEOAL will offer.
GO TROJANS!!!

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
From what the PDT said, the vote was silent.....if one school requests a silent vote, then the vote is silent....... according to the SOC constitution.
The SOC schools sit in the catbird's seat when it comes to Portsmouth......they get the gate from playing them in non-conference, but don't have to compete with them for an SOC championship.........it's a win-win situation for the SOC schools.
It doesn't surprise me at all that PHS got rejected........I thought that we would and I will go on record to say that we will NEVER get accepted........and will stand by that statement until proven otherwise........

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
Did SG and Portsmouth go on the same ballot.....................if so, why? I feel portsmouth has a greater chance of getting in if they were voted on by themselves. SG is a long distance to travel for all of the other SOC I schools.

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
PHS and South Gallia did go in as a package deal to balance out SOC II and SOC I.
Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
I don't understand this at all. The two divisions don't even compete against each other. I don't see why it would make a difference if one division had 20 teams, and the other had 5.
Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
I bet that if the votes were made public, you would see that all of the SOC II schools voted for the two, and all of the SOC I schools voted against it. A few of the bigger schools play them already, and who wouldn't want to get to play in PHS new facilities every year. The smaller schools are the ones that are in a no win situation................they have to travel, and they will loose gate money - rather than gain money.

Re: SOC denies Portsmouth, South Gallia
They originally went together but in the end they broke a part plus was told that the SOC could not vote on them together. There is no reason for people to be upset. I think both schools felt this was a long shot anyway.
