Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
Excellent observation. I'm an alumnus of a private Christian school in Florida that only offered a college prep curriculum. The admins kept the enrollment low, 300 or so in K-12. We had about 100 students in grades 9-12. Only 40 boys so we did not have football -- soccer, basketball and baseball.Paladin_II wrote:Also of note -- most parochials in the Youngstown diocese only offer college prep. No general studies, no special ed classes, no handicapped, no learning disabilities, etc. That can and does limit staffing. Since there are Parochial school unions, they must watch how big the staff is so they can still afford to pay salaries, benefits and a limited expenses. They have no facilites , other than gyms as they play home games at YSU for football, use park ball diamonds and have no home track fields. Lots of boosters tap the major employers and wealthy businessmen for support. All parishes are asked to contribute a % of the Sunday collections. Bingo, of course, is a staple . Now, in addition to "scholarships" raised, state vouchers are now part of the money trail. The schools remain selective on who can be admitted as they must count $$$$$$$$ in projecting staff needs & expenses. Many catholic grade schools have been closed because of declining enrollment and rising expenses.
Your description of the staffing issues, support from boosters and friendly local businesses, and fundraising efforts through the host church and outside events is very similar to what we had in place back in the day.
My alma mater is still very successful, following a very similar pattern. They have maintained enrollment (K-12) between 300-400 students. They never added football due to the expense.

Now, where can we find the numbers for how many square miles a district covers?

Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
If my math is correct, during the period of 2001-2010, all divisions included, public schools have won 29 OHSAA state football championships, while private schools have won 31.

Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
But it is getting worse....based on what was posted above, it doesn't look like a public school has won a title in d4-d6 since 07.
Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
What is the percentage of public schools to privates in Ohio? Statistically, if they win more than 50% or the titles, they should have more than 50% of the total schools, correct?WitnessProtection wrote:If my math is correct, during the period of 2001-2010, all divisions included, public schools have won 29 OHSAA state football championships, while private schools have won 31.
Oh and check this out on the vouchers. While their cutting money for the public schools, their pumping more into the vouchers/privates http://thinkprogress.org/education/2011 ... 0-million/
Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
When West beat Youngstown Ursuline in the state semi's they were D4. They had been D4 and were competitive but couldn't get over the hump. D4 for the last several years has been the most competitve divison in the state with the Irontons, Coldwaters, Kentons and others as solid public schools in that division during that time. Not to mention private universities in Kettering Alter and Cardinal Mooney. Surely they didn't drop back to D5 because it was easier? Surely not?WitnessProtection wrote:Speculation: The route to a D5 or D6 state title is possibly a little easier than having to face St. Ed's, St. Ig, St. X, or Moeller, at some point. Given this, perhaps the admins at Mooney and Ursuline choose the path of a little less resistance.
Just a thought.
During this time Vouchers have become more prominate, which should've made their enrollment go up, not down shouldn't it?

Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
Well, Ursuline wins tonight, 42-31. So much for them blowing out SVSM. Ursuline had to score 21 points in the 4th quarter to pull out the win. Let's see where the chips fall now.

Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
This info tells it all about the public vs. private debate... what are two of the following schools public? There is much more parity among public schools over time...
ALL-TIME TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: Going into the 2011 playoffs there are nine schools with four or more OHSAA football championships. Cleveland St. Ignatius has 10, Newark Catholic (8), Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (7), Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (7), Cleveland Benedictine (6), St. Henry (6), Versailles (6), Delphos St. John’s (6), Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (4), Maria Stein Marion Local (4) and Youngstown Ursuline (4).
Eighty-seven additional schools have won at least one or more state football championships. Thirteen percent of all football-playing schools in Ohio have won a state championship.

Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
Actually, I believe that three of the schools listed above are public, St. Henry, Versailles, and Maria Stein Marion Local. So 66.7% are private, and 33.3% are public, in the group of schools with four or more state football championships.
Re: HERE THEY COME: YOUNGSTOWN URSULINE
I realize the number of titles public versus private are close but not being discussed is that my guess is there are at least 3 times the number of public schools in Ohio. so by the rationale there should be three times the number titles to public schools than private schools.
