CHS Cavs rally, edge GAHS, 8-6

Post by jottings »

Southeastern Ohio League South Division champion Chillicothe rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the third inning to hand Gallia Academy’s High School Blue Devils an 8-6 setback on rain-soaked Memorial Field Thursday in a makeup contest.

The victory left Chillicothe 15-7 on the season and 10-0 in South Division play. GAHS dropped to 12-7 overall and finished league play in second place of the South Division with a 7-5 record. The win gave CHS the 2009 series sweep (3 games) over the Blue Devils.

Weather permitting, GAHS will visit Meigs Friday afternoon for a non-league game. Monday’s Gallipolis non-league game at Logan has been called off because Logan has a league makeup game. The Blue Devils play at Warren Local Tuesday in a non-league game.

On Wednesday, GAHS will host a Day of Champions contest on Memorial Field, probably Marietta although the Tigers inflicted the first league loss of the year on previously unbeaten Zanesville, 7-1 in a makeup contest Thursday evening at Marietta.

Thursday, Beau Whaley went the distance for GAHS. Whaley gave up eight runs on 12 hits. GAHS had four errors. Whaley fanned three and walked four.

Nate Winston was credited with the CHS victory, going five and 1/3 innings. Winston was relieved by James Vanvoorhis in the sixth inning. Both hurlers allowed six runs on 10 Blue Devil hits. CHS also made four errors during the game.

For Gallipolis, Tyler Eastman had three hits in four trips, Chuck Calvert and Whaley had two safeties apiece, and Calib Warnimont, Kyle Dingess and Terry Smith each had one safety.

For the South Division champs, Alex Grow had a three run homer in the third. Bruillion smacked out three hits and Seth Dawes two hits, including a two-run double in a third inning uprising.

Gallipolis plated two runs each in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. However, in the top of the third, CHS batted around to score five runs for a 5-4 advantage after three full innings.

Both teams scored one each in the fourth frame. CHS made it 7-5 in the fifth and 8-5 in the sixth. GAHS added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but a Cavs double play ended that threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gallipolis had two on and two out with the winning run at the plate, but Vanvoorhis fanned the Gallians final batter to end the game.

Score by innings:
Chillicothe…..005 111 0 – 8-12-4
Gallipolis……220 101 0 - 6-10-4

Batteries:
WP—Winston, Vanvoorhis, 6th & Dawes.
