Vinton County football 2009
Re: Vinton County football 2009
the lil vikes program is an awesome program in the past.I am a former lil Vike and also was on the Lil Vikes team who was the only undeafeated reserve team and the only superbowl winning team. I find it hard to believe you say you dont learn anything and it makes us less likely to play on friday night. The Lil Vikes is a inspiration and good foundation to build on going into you further years. You cannot give kids a passion or desire to lift, or to do the things they need to be suceesful. what you can do is support and give them the right people to push them into the right direction

Yes and try to get them to stay at VC instead of going to Wellston, or Jackson...vikings52 wrote:the lil vikes program is an awesome program in the past.I am a former lil Vike and also was on the Lil Vikes team who was the only undeafeated reserve team and the only superbowl winning team. i dont think some move due to the sports but also family. but the program needs a good base and good foundation of coaches and players and it should spark the intrest in other students. kids have to believe along with the community and good things will happen.

Re: Vinton County football 2009
Tell you guys the truth, I played VC football from 2nd grade til I graduated. Thats 10 yrs. Started the whole time I was in peewee's and Jr. high at a variety of positions. Came to HS and never really got the chance. Missed my freshman year with a broken leg from a motocross accident trying to qualify for nationals, then I hung that up for the other 3 sports I played. While in Jr high however I had coach Yates as a basketball coach, then I had him as a football coach in HS. I must say he is a great person and he has earned my respect for a lifetime. However he is a much better basketball coach than he is football coach.
He just tried to make too many changes on the fly in football, like you can do in basketball. My senior football season I was finally a starting runningback for coach. We had a less than impressive first game but we ended up winning and we, as players, got really hungry. But for some reason we changed our offense, not just slowly, but "introduced" it one day and it was our main offense the next. This did nothing more than confuse and frustrate us. Jackson had problems the week before they played us with the second back through the whole, but we left that offense and went to a double wing, double split, single back look that didn't work out for us. We never got blown out this season except maybe the Bloom Carroll game.
As I have said I love coach yates as a person and still talk to him when I get the chance.
Better question though. Why did VC get rid of Downs after he took them to the playoffs and then Fed Hock did the same?

Yeah he was there my freshman year when I broke my leg but after that it was yates.

Downs had a tremendous amount of talent in 04. Had helmsley not gotten fired I believe those Vikings would've went 9-1 that year and won the league.

We had just as much talent the rest of the time I was in school and we just didn't know how to use it.

3 sport I see you on Basketball badmouthing Combs(basketball coach) and on here badmouthing Yates. No wonder Vinton County is in the shape its in.
No confidence and respect for the coaches. Dont blame the coaches when the talent on the field is not up to par.

2004: 8-2
2005: 3-7
Same coach both years. The talent left in the spring of 05.

I just now noticed that the title said 2009. VC better keep him. He can build a good program. I'm sure he has had them guys in the weightroom ever since the season ended.boilermaker wrote:Burleson is still there as far as I know.

the incident with Downs was never clear. The things i have heard is that he was fired due to the superattendent. I mean im not sure if the reasons were clear but the superattendent had family on the football team, the kid didnt get much time playing and Downs ended up not coach

Sounds like what they are trying to do in Johnstown. Trying to "non renew" the winningest coach in school history...

Re: Vinton County football 2009
I remember reading somewhere in the paper at that time, Downs saying it was a voluntary decision on his part to step down , and that he was giving up the position because he wanted to spend time with his family . Not long after that he took the football job at Federal Hocking which was going to have one of their better groups of players coming up.

It seems like VC did some things well this past year. Conditioning seemed like the area that needed the most work. There times against NY that they moved the ball well on Offense, and there D played pretty stout for a while. I think once the kids get a complete handle on the sytem they will be fine.
