Rules Question.
as i stated before I'm pretty much a rookie at this VB thing so i'll ask some of you more expericienced fans this : tonight the ref (official) really inserted him self into the game in the ND -Western game at ND. The problem was with the student section, so before i even start i know that if i were competing against ND I'd be the 1st to say those students get on my nerves . The best that I describe the students were doing their typical cheers they have done all year. The officials calling the game were the same officials we have had several times this year. Nothing had ever been said . Tonight the 1st time he approached our students he told them they could not wave their arms or even move their arms while the opposing team was serving. The 2nd time he came over after a dead ball , in which the students did some cheer. To the best that i was told he told them they could not clap, cheer or scream while the other team was serving. At this point our student section was somewhat confused and pretty much gave up cheering , they sit down and the entire gymm just got very quiet. So whats legal ? In hoops the students scream bloody murder at the opposing team , they wave their arms during free throws , they point , they chant. As long as it's in good taste . So whats legal ?
Re: Rules Question.
Doesn't sound right. I've seen basketball kids without mercy bash a girl with the "airball" chant everytime she touched the ball for all 4 quarters....while being supervised by a coach of that school district! Didn't even matter that they lost by double digits. Lol
Re: Rules Question.
I also have a rules question. When the ball is on your side and a player shanks it off the court and to the far right of the volleyball pole, can a teammate run past the centercourt line to retrieve the ball back to het team for a potential 3rd shot over the net legally? We had one tonight where our player went about 4 feet past the center line...but way outside the right standard to successfully retrieve....refs didn't allow.
Re: Rules Question.
Unless they have re-written the rule book, your player can run down the hall and send it back to her side for a third hit, if two things are followed. 1 the player must cross outside of the net and 2 When she returns the ball it must stay on th outside of the antena! If this is done she can return it while suckin down a slurppy at the 7-11 down the street.Ironman92 wrote:I also have a rules question. Re: Rules Question.
Sorry Esully63 but that rule doesn't apply to high school volleyball. You are thinking of club or college. A player may cross the centerline but the ball must remain on the same side of the net for it to be okay. Once the ball has passed beyond the centerline of the net outside the antennae it is OUT.
Unless the fans are specifically targeting a specific server or player then nothing is necessarily wrong with fans cheering. the problem that I have witnessed or heard about regarding several incidents is the inappropriate language, name calling, artificial noisemakers. The gym cannot be totally quiet and then a fan or fans or a opposing player yell really loud at a player while she is attempting to play/serve a ball. The problem most times...where is the home administration?

Re: Rules Question.
at least in this specific incident there was zero targeting anyone, and zero inappropriate language, or name calling or artificial noisemakers. I was seated next to the school principle and we were both no more than 10 feet from the student section. There was also no attempt to be quiet then let out a scream or shout to disrupt play. Our students really get into the games, it's FANTASTIC the support they give our team, like off the charts great ..they usually have a theme , they have had "beach night" and "cowboy night" and "costume night" . They make it fun to be there. Last night they just gave up , set down , and got very sedate. IMO it's wrong to handcuff the kids so tightly they give up cheering. and thats exactly what happened last night. MD

Re: Rules Question.
i tryed looking on those 2 sites but too much to surf thru to find the info I was looking for. ... would love to know if the official overstepped his bounds MD
Re: Rules Question.
...maybe...but what did it hurt...nothing...so a few spectators couldn't cheer...oh well...it may ruin the atmosphere...it may cause the event to be boring...the thing to remember...it's about the athletes on the floor...besides...the officials are in charge once the game begins whether we like it or not...everyone makes mistakes...how many spectators have been thrown out of a basketball game...sometimes it is justified...sometimes it is not...sometimes it works in the favor of a certain team other times not...does it help one team over the other...maybe...does it cause a problem...sometimes...all part of the game...
also...you may be looking through rose colored glasses to a point...you are from ND...maybe something happened the last time and the official wanted to make sure it didn't happen again...couldn't tell you that since I was not there...but what you saw or what you think happened may not have been the whole story...maybe he handled the situation the wrong way...maybe the opponent thinks he did the right thing...

Re: Rules Question.
" a few spectators" yep , you sure have not been to a home SOC VB contest at ND. I agree to a point about seeing things thru ND colored glasses . I'm an ND guy . BUT I know exactly what happened last night , the guy ruined the night for the entire ND cheer block. It was NOT a few spectator's, ND has 30-40 kids in their cheer block and it did hurt something. It took away all the school spirit those kids were willing to give. I guess you had to be there to see the confusion the official caused and the dead silence that followed his repremands. The fans should not determine the outcome of a game BUT students surely should have the right to cheer.
Re: Rules Question.
This is an interesting question becuase we all like to cheer our kids on! And there is definetly nothing more powerful than a great fan base. I think we as fans may lose sight of what "cheering" is supposed to do. When these students are cheering, are they cheering their team on or are they trying to get into the other teams heads? I would bet most of the student sections are doing the latter. Although it is fun and even exhilirating, I think many times it borders on poor sportsmanship. If the students want to cheer their team on, they still need to be respectful of the other fellow student athletes. I wonder if we all, parents, students and administration forget that. Therse are high school athletes not professionals, and many of these student athletes don't deserve to have the humiliation that ensues. Intentional or not....

Re: Rules Question.
I saw a similar thing this year at a game I attended. The ref turned around and told them to not yell while the other team was serving. The students did not listen and then were told they would be ejected if it happened again. But something caught my attention, The referee then told the student section they were alowed to yell whatever they want while their team had the ball, but not the opposing team. This just made no sense to me.

Re: Rules Question.
jewey --good post . I agree nothing should be done to disrespect any team or higlight any invividual ( makes me think of the hoops cheere Air Ball Air Ball LOL) but in this instance ND's principle was seated 10 feet from cheer block. The AD was close by. There was ZERO disrespectful anything going on that night. MD
