...to have a little fun??? Who's having fun here? I could have told you the outcome of this endeavor years before it ever crossed your mind, No Reply. You are comparing apples to...well...smaller apples. And some of them are very tasty apples, but come on. The tasty ones are harder to come by in the TVC. I am very proud of the accomplishments of the TVC schools as they, too, should be. And I am in no way demeaning what you do here on "SEOP". I really appreciate the TVC updates as I'm sure the SEOAL schools appreciate their updates. But here we are at the end of the season, kids are running, throwing and jumping some of their best ever, Seniors are getting pumped about the prospect of qualifying for the State and, by chance, they read "TVC vs. SEOAL" and feel like someone just kicked 'em in the gut.

It's just like the state academic report card all over again. "Why can't you poor rural schools, who RIF teachers every year and have next to zero resources at your disposal, and for that matter, spend 50% of your zero resources bussing kids to school because they live a good 45 minutes from the school and can in no way participate in any extra-curricular activity because their parents don't have the money to drive that far night after night to get them just because they would like to run track or something...yes, WHY, OH WHY, Can't you do as well on the OAT's and OGT as the Mason HS and Pickerington HS kids???

So now, we all sit down to preview our next biggest meet on our schedule, hoping beyond hope that we find some encouragement that a date at the state is a possibility, and we just get bombarded with "the SEOAL is better than the TVC" and "GAHS dominates the district" once again. Wow. Thanks for stroking your own egos at our expense. I just hope that if the tide ever turns, we in the TVC will be kind enough to not slam everyone else in the process.

I've always wondered what things are like on the other side of that fence. I know of coaches in the TVC that ARE the coach. HS...Jr. High...Boys and Girls. And will probably send someone to the show in their division. How? Think about that for a second, compared to two or three boys coaches, two or three girls coaches, two or three jr. high coaches. Now that is a coaching accomplishment. Finding time for all those different events and teams by yourself. And that is probably closer to the norm than the exception around the TVC.

But again I say, I am very proud of the kids from the TVC. They just shouldn't have to be made to feel lesser than a league mainly comprised of city schools and D1's. And I do expect every athlete from a TVC school who reads this to rise to the challenge before them rather than use their school's circumstances as a crutch.

Good Luck to all in the remainder of your season!!!

Wow!

Noreply66, I thought it was interesting and good to see the great performances of all the kids in our area highlighted in your post. Thanks for all the time you spend putting this together during the year. It is appreciated.

It's nice to see some of these stats. I expected the TVC to do better in shot.

Good luck to all the "smaller apples"

Thanks for the breakdown noreply. I like seeing the TVC and SEOAL combined like this just to get a feel for how the names we read about in the paper stack up to each other. This was clearly all done for fun, I don't take offense to this at all. Noreply has been a huge fan of the TVC in his posts in all the years he's been posting on here. He was not trying to degrade the TVC, I promise you that.

Noreply.....perhaps taking your breakdown a step further would be a more accurate (though far from perfect) analysis. What if you took the number of points scored in your analysis by each team and developed a total team score for each school. Then, take that score and divide it by the number of boys who are enrolled in each school to account for size differences. Then whatever number you have would be the score to use in comparing each school. This would take into account size difference, but would still not account for city vs. rural, which I don't think can ever be accounted for in something like this.

Sounds like alot of math. Maybe a better figure, and easier number to work with, would be to use the number of kids on each team rather than school numbers. Not all kids participate. But either way GAHS will not fail in comparison regardless b/c alot of the TVC schools are just as big. Same with Ironton and Portsmouth, most TVC schools are bigger than Portsmouth.

I appreciate your efforts noreply66, you do a great job keeping us all informed.

If anyone thinks noreply has a personal agenda believe me he could have used season bests or even incorporated Distric numbers into the mix and really made things lopsided rather than the league meets. I believe one had much more extreme conditions than the other.

I think in most sports we need to throw the numbers game out the window b/c each team usually has an even number of participants for the most part. Heck we have been beaten by Logan in fball for how many years straight now?? I promise I don't use the "they are bigger excuse." They have been better recently and kicked our butts. And as far as city to rural. I live in Gallipolis!!!!!! Most of the schools in both leagues are a mix of rural and rural city kids but not many actual city kids. Athens may be the exception along with Chilli, Marrietta, and thru this year, Zanesville. I really don't see that living in the city would make you faster or in any way better unless you just simply work harder than rural kids. Who's fault is that? Surely nobody thinks living in a city makes anyone a better athlete do they? Genetics, maybe; sweat and work, yes; but location, NO WAY!!

I think the point the poster above was trying to make is that rural districts have trouble attracting athletes from the outskirts of the district. Districts that take up a lot of land mass without any centralized pocket of population - like a Vinton County or Federal Hocking. From my understanding of posters on here from various schools - the students who are athletes in the rural districts tend to live within a reasonable distance of the school campus, while students who live miles away from the school tend not to participate in athletics. I think Logan also experiences this, but Logan is also a city, so there is a pre-existing centralized pocket of population that the school district can draw from that would not exist at a Vinton County or Federal Hocking.

I know Nelsonville-York has always drawn well from all over the school district, but landwise, the district does not cover much land compared to neighboring districts, so the entire student body lives within a reasonable distance of the school. But obviously if you compared NY to Logan or Marietta or Zanesville, NY is much smaller than those schools, so would not have the same number of kids to pool from for various sports. I guess you would have to lump NY into the city districts, since Nelsonville is a city. Trimble is definately a rural district, but the district is so small land wise that it always draws athletes from all over the district. And traditionally, Trimble has done well in several sports despite being so small (in part because the population is so centralized compared to a Vinton County or Federal Hocking). And while the rural districts all have a sport or two that they thrive in, when you take into account all sports, they aren't always as successful as the smaller schools that don't take up as much land. A good example here is Vinton County. VC finished in last place in the TVC OHIO all sports standings this year, yet they are the second largest school (and were the largest until this year when Athens joined). I think VC has always traditionally been towards the bottom of the all-sports standings. I think the fact that so many of their students live so far away from the school campus has somthing to do with this.
