although he wasnt in the shape he is now in high school and often injured Kyle Pertuset could shoot it for Minford, along with Luke Slone, and Joey Preston. Great Athletes
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
A couple of guys not mentioned.....Rick Farrell of Portsmouth West and Phil Snow of Sabina (think it's called East Clinton now).
Rick Ferrell also played at Minford in the mid 60's. I believe he scored 43 points in one game.

During my time, knowing my time hasn't had many good years of basketball at West,I would have to say that Matt Jones or Shea Lauder would have to be the best I say I've seen down at Portsmouth West. I know some of you guys might laugh, but we don't have the basketball down at West. I would have loved to seen Chris Hamilton or Boyce Jordan play! I've heard nothing but good things about them.
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
My shooting percentage at South Webster was 66%!!!
Oh, I guess I should mention I was 2 for 3. Don't know if that qualifies for the record books.

One of the best ever shooters in the history of Wheelersburg was Edith Hall. Natural talent. Holds the record for Wheelersburg of points in a game with 62. She led the state of Ohio (boys and girls) for points per game average her sophomore year. She played semi professional basketball for awhile after school. Oh, and her sophomore year was her first year for playing basketball.

Wow! Was that also the first year Ladies we allowed to play? Most may not know this but Women's basketball has only been around since the mid 70's.There were probably intramural games and teams before that but as far as schools having teams and playing against each other that started around maybe 75-76?

Actually you are so wrong about that! Boys and girls basketball in Scioto County started at the same time sometime just after the County school boards were formed in 1914. E.O. McCowen, Wheelersburg superintendent, was chosen as the first county superintendent for Scioto County. He had previously served at Bloom, Proctorville and I believe South Point as superintendent. He, along with a friend on the school board at Bloom, got together and started the Scioto County League shortly after that.
It was a basketball league involving all the county schools, but not the city schools: Portsmouth, Central Catholic, New Boston or East (after 1920). Some were too small to field a team every year but there was usually at least six teams with a girls' team involved in the league. There was even a state tournament for girls until the mid thirties.
For approximately 25 years, Wheelersburg, South Webster, Valley, Green, Rarden, Otway (sometimes), McDermott and Minford had girls teams that played a full schedule. World War II was the thing that seemed to kill girls basketball.
January 1976 was when Wheelersburg restarted basketball with a partial season. I think a few of the teams may have started in December 1975.
Edith Hall was a sophomore in 1936 if I remember correctly and played three years for Wheelersburg. She played some semi-professional basketball toward the end of WWII when there were several leagues with teams sponsored by local business. There was one such league was in Charleston and featured at least a half a dozen teams. There were a lot of baseball leagues that way around then also. She played until about 1952 when she became a mother. At 92, she still laughs about the half court shot she made once that won a game during that post-WWII play that she did.
In 1936, 25 points would usually win a boys' game--Portsmouth boys beat Marietta 21-19, for example, that season. 62 points was likely the state record at the time for boys or girls for points in a game. It still places her in the top ten for girls all time. The Wheelersburg AD was going to submit the paper work on that this summer. Hopefully, OHSAA will include it in their on-line records.
Sometime, I will have to write more about EO McCowen. He was quite a character.

Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
I just assumed that schools were just starting girls basketball back in the mid seventies not starting it back up after being dormant for all those years...Thanks for the info....I stand corrected...
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
No problem. The situation was rather unique in Scioto County and took some vision on the part of the founders of the SCL. You have to excuse me as you just happened to hit on one of my current research projects.

From the "Furnace" there is Rick Scarberry, probably the best pure shooter to come out of here in the past 40 years. If there was a 3-point line at the time, he would hold the scoring record in Scioto County. Mike Hughes, I was told, could light it up. And Brian Roach, who ended his career with more than 1500 pts. caused heartache for opponents. He would rip you one on one going to the hole then pull up from 20 and drain 'em. The most competitive kid I ever saw on the floor. Hackworth was a great shooter as was Chris Williams. The kid who played with Williams, I can't recall his name, was also a clutch shooter from the perimeter.
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
Best at Nelsonville York in my opinion is Tom Taggart all time boys leading scorer at NY in the early 80's before my time though but have since old videos of his games and he can still shoot it .... as for someone I acutally saw play in person LOL wasn't from NY but played against NY in the mid to late 90's is Coy Lindsey from Logan and absolute sniper and Buckeye killer on the court. Wow in my opinion he might be the best of balanced shooter I've ever seen in HS ball he could flat knock it down from anywhere
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
I agree with your assessment of the Furnace. Brian Roach is still the all time leading scorer for the Bobcats with over 1600 pts. don't remember the number. Scarberry was a pure shooter for the Cat's.
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
From Eastern Pike Don Arnett,Donnie Miller, Arnold King, Neil Leist,Mark Cochanour,[sp] just to name a few from the late 70sand early 80s all these guys had a good stroke on the ball.

Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
I believe the person that Frank-n-Beans was thinking of as another good shooter from the furnace was Michael Riffe. He had an excellent shoot and it was probably better than Chris Williams'. And another great shooter from Green after these guys was Aaron Patten. But I agree with most people that Scarberry and Roach are the 2 best to come from GHS.
Re: Who is the best shooter ever played for your High School?
From Symmes Valley it would have to be without a doubt Don Wilson (1970) No three point shot yet he averaged 41 points a game his junior and senior years when Symmes Valley was in the OVC.
