If I was the AD I would not, until things changed. I have heard from people close to the program that my strategy is being highly considered. Do not be surprised if in 2-3 years Portsmouth does not play any SOC schools, in any sports, until they are allowed in 'The League'.

I not only won't be surprised, I won't even care.

(However, I would venture to say that if they quit playing West and Burg, they will soon find them in the same financial straights Ironton is in from having to travel to find quality teams.)

Is that why you have 4 posts in the last 10 minutes, on Portsmouth being in the SOC? It sounds like you don't care.

The Portsmouth Athletic Department will do just fine. With the first class facilities they have, Portsmouth will not be hurting for $$. The OHSAA has already contacted Portsmouth for the possible use of the Coliseum, and for more than just football.

you make it sound like it's an honor to play portsmouth. It's not. And quite frankly, when it comes to the pigskin, they aren't anything like they used to be. I would like to see them in the league, but face it, it isn't going to happen. Ever.

Maybe not playing any SOC schools is an excuse because the only two that they play, they can't beat regularly. In fact after West beats them on the first game at their new field in a couple weeks (for the 4th out of the last 5 meetings), I'm sure the coaching staff will start feeling a little heat.

I get a kick out of people bashing Portsmouth, but then turn around and want to schedule them.

It all comes down to the SOC wanting the Best of Both Worlds. Nothing more, nothing less.

First I am for kicking Northwest out and bringing Portsmouth in. But, why are Portsmouth people on here whining and threatening SOC schools with a loss in $$? Pretty dumb move really. Its not like Portsmouth packs the the stands on average or down years. Every SOC game holds a good gate regardless of records. For instance Burg has absolutely dominated the Minford series yet that game is packed every single time home or away by both schools. So its a pretty empty threat! You catch more flies with HONEY! Not dumb empty threats.

I still say Ports, Burg, West, Waverly, Jackson, Chilli, Gallia, Minford, Valley, n Piketon would make a sweet league. You would have limited travel, keep the money local, n have some nice rivalries. Yes some schools are bigger than others but enrollments change year to year anyway...Most of these schools already play in various sports.

I wouldn't want Jackson to go anywhere without Gallia. We have too much history between us. As for Chilli, I feel they are a good fit to our area. I honestly don't like Ironton because at the time the state was building RT 93, i think they were coming off of an all nighter lol...

pmow3 wrote:I have a question. I hate to start this but I can't resist. I am a big Valley fan and a fan of the SOC. But, if I were Portsmouth, I've got to say that I would tell the schools of the SOC that play them in these scrimmages, (Valley,Minford) and even Burg and West who play them in the regular season to forget it. Portsmouth repeatedly tries to enter this conference and gets denied by the same schools they "help" by playing. The money that's generated when Portsmouth comes to play an SOC school is probably significantly higher than anything Minford or Valley could get playing anyone else. And this would certainly be true in the case of Burg or West during the season.
I've always argued for allowing Portsmouth in the league. Creating a 3 tier league of power schools, midlevel, and lower tier teams to make a southern Ohio powerhouse conference. But, if I'm Portsmouth, I don't see any reason why Ptown should help these schools out. The SOC gets the best of both worlds this way. It's ridiculous.
And the reasons I've heard in the past as to why Ptown isn't allowed in are just as stupid. The reputation that Ptown would cause problems in the SOC because of a city school coming out to the rural schools is crazy. There are people that think this would actually be a problem. Big city school means trouble, PLEASE!! No more than that rural school I guarantee it. Now that's not the only reason they don't get in, but I can't understand any of the other reasons either.
It doesn't matter what schools are keeping this from happening because reguardless, Ptown is out and they help any school in the SOC that they play "in any sport". If I'm Portsmouth, I'd tell every SOC school to shove it. And make sure those schools tell the ones that keep them out that we said shove it to them too. Can't wait for a reply on this one.

i could be wrong but i believe burg and west want ports in the conference. i think so does minford
