But, if I were Portsmouth, I've got to say that I would tell the schools of the SOC that play them in these scrimmages, (Valley,Minford) and even Burg and West who play them in the regular season to forget it. Portsmouth repeatedly tries to enter this conference and gets denied by the same schools they "help" by playing. The money that's generated when Portsmouth comes to play an SOC school is probably significantly higher than anything Minford or Valley could get playing anyone else. And this would certainly be true in the case of Burg or West during the season.
I've always argued for allowing Portsmouth in the league. Creating a 3 tier league of power schools, midlevel, and lower tier teams to make a southern Ohio powerhouse conference. But, if I'm Portsmouth, I don't see any reason why Ptown should help these schools out. The SOC gets the best of both worlds this way. It's ridiculous.
And the reasons I've heard in the past as to why Ptown isn't allowed in are just as stupid. The reputation that Ptown would cause problems in the SOC because of a city school coming out to the rural schools is crazy. There are people that think this would actually be a problem. Big city school means trouble, PLEASE!! No more than that rural school I guarantee it. Now that's not the only reason they don't get in, but I can't understand any of the other reasons either.
It doesn't matter what schools are keeping this from happening because reguardless, Ptown is out and they help any school in the SOC that they play "in any sport". If I'm Portsmouth, I'd tell every SOC school to shove it. And make sure those schools tell the ones that keep them out that we said shove it to them too. Can't wait for a reply on this one.

i could be wrong but i believe burg and west want ports in the conference. i think so does minford

yes Minford does as well. they would sill be playing but both had scheduling probs

My biggest thing is it would help every school in the SOC not just Portsmouth.
"If" the SOC would just look at this and see how much easier it would be to schedule the games, they would definitely consider this.
You get 3 divisions: SOC 1-- Waverly, Burg, Portsmouth, Ironton, and West
SOC 2-- Minford, Valley, Northwest, Oak Hill, and maybe a Piketon
SOC 3-- Green, Notre Dame, East, Symmes Valley, South Gallia,
You can schedule anybody. If a Minford and Valley feel frisky they can schedule up and play the big boys in "nonconference" games. Northwest can schedule down if they want instead of being stuck playing div. 1. East can schedule up and play teams in Div. 2. It would be a great thing.
Plus, and here is why I think it would be so great: The winners of these leagues would definitely make the playoffs. The winners would beat up on the teams within the divisions and there would be probably 3 or 4 more teams that will make the playoffs. This kind of scheduling and flexibility gives more teams a chance. If Minford likes their chances for a playoff run, their A.D. simply schedules up. Valley, the same way. If West is having a down couple of years, they can schedule down. Keeping it within a 15 or 20 team rotation gives you the best chance at "maximizing" or even "manipulating" the computer points. What I mean by manipulating is: The SOC could look at strengths of teams coming up 2 or 3 years ahead and give the better teams better matchups to get the most teams from the conference in.
Now, I haven't even touched on this but look at each teams' schedules. HOW MUCH MONEY WOULD YOU SAVE IN GAS FOR EACH TEAM TO HAVE 8 OR 9 GAMES WITHIN THIS CONFERENCE??? A whole bunch of money. That's how much. This is just an example but if you are Valley and you like the classes coming up. You can do this:

Valley schedule in 09 Non conference ------------ Valley under this format non conference
Huntington Ross ------------------------------------ Portsmouth
Chesapeake ----------------------------------------- East
Coal Grove ------------------------------------------ Waverly
South Point ------------------------------------------- Burg
Rock Hill ------------------------------------------------ West
-----------------------------------------plus---- 1 more non conf. game (could be anybody)

How much money is saved in gas? The rest of Valley's schedule would have Minford, NW Oak Hill, and Piketon.

Now there's alot of people that would argue Ironton being in. But they could continue to have non conference games with Ashland, Jackson, Gallia, Logan if Itown is up, or whoever. The key is taking advantage of all these teams to make great scheduling.

1 more thing: there are alot of people talking about the football issues here, but we haven't even touched the other sports. I mean, how much gas would you save per school to do it this way??? Come on!! A whole darn bunch!! Come on SOC, wake up and make this a great conference where every team has a competitive chance.

Why don't you bring up this arguement when it is about time for this vote to take place?
Its already came and failed. This horse isn't coming back to life this time around so quit beating it!

Valley coach to West coach:
Hey coach, I think we can beat you 3 years from now so I'm gonna schedule you for the second week.

West coach to Valley coach:
Are you kidding? We are gonna be down that year so I'm scheduling Oak Hill for week two.

Oak Hill coach to West coach:
Oh, no, brother. We know you're going to be down that year so we won't get squat in the way of computer points from you with a win. We're gonna be up and need some good point value games so I'm scheduling Waverly for game two.

Waverly coach to Oak Hill coach:
Sorry coach but in three years from now we plan to be moved to the OVC and out of this dizzying mess. Why don't you see if you can schedule Minford or Wheelersburg?

Oak hill coach to Waverly coach:
Minford and Wheelersburg moved to the Ohio-Kentucky League LAST year, remember?

Waverly coach:
Oh, yeah. I forgot.

Portsmouth coach:
Anybody wanna talk about scheduling us 4 years from now??? :?

While all the other coaches are busy chasing their tails, Northwest sneaks in as SOC champs four years in a row.

It's not going to happen anytime soon. We would be more likely to get 'Burg or West into another league than we would getting the other SOC schools to let us in.

Since West and the Burg have both been in the SOC for 50 + years, I doubt they will be going anywhere any time soon.

I doubt it also, but the SOC is not going to let Portsmouth either so you could use just about any analogy you want. The only advantage the SOC has over the SEOAL is not having to play Marietta, Logan and Warren. You either have to get off work early, show up late, or miss the games on Friday night.

I am glad that Portsmouth is in the SEOAL and hope that our stay in the league is long term.........as one of our kids told me one day, "we now have a chance to win a league championship"..........thanks to the SEOAL for making that possible.

I just have to add that I have thought and I still think that it is absolutely ridiculous to NOT let Portsmouth in the league. People need to grow up, realize that the fans and kids in Portsmouth are not that bad and that it can be a win-win situation for all. When ADULT coaches vote the KIDS from PHS out of the league they are punishing the kids just for being from Portsmouth. This whole thing is about perception of how a kid or fan from Portsmouth MIGHT behave at a sporting event. And that is just downright sad.

one thing hopefully EVERYONE can agree on --If portsmouth tries again (and I hope they do) everyone should demand a public vote !

Pmow3 --I love your suggestion , thats good stuff.

Maybe the best post I've read regarding this situation. It is sad when adults in general treat the kids from Portsmouth (or any school) like this. That is why the vote should be made public. The ‘reasonable fans’ of SOC schools want Portsmouth in, so let these fans see if there AD is indeed voting for Portsmouth to be in the SOC or not. If school XYZ votes for Portsmouth to not be in the SOC, why would they still want to play Portsmouth? Also, if a school does not play Portsmouth, there is no risk in letting them in.

There will be some fans, like TheMalteseFalcon, who bash Portsmouth every chance she gets but the majority of sports fans know Portsmouth in the SOC would make for some fun matchups, week in and week out. I know I would enjoy playing local teams every week. The buzz around town would be exciting. Portsmouth would be competitive in the SOC but definitely would not dominate any sport. If anything, outside one or two sports, Portsmouth would be in the middle of the pack for most sports.

EVERY CHANCE ????? Show me ONE TIME where I bashed any individual kids or Portsmouth as a team anytime. ONE TIME. You have a vivid imagination, Buffy.

AND while we are at it, there has only been ONE person on here that has intimated that Portsmouth can't get into the SOC because the "kids are bad" and he certainly doesn't represent the voting coaches of the SOC I guarantee you. I can't imagine where THAT little gem came from but again, I'll guarantee you that it never came from the mouth of any of the voting SOC coaches. SOME people on here are just like a couple of little ol' ladies spreading malicious gossip over the back yard fence.  That is a TERRIBLE and VERY LOW rumor to spread about the SOC coaches and should be retracted. Perhaps that is just deep down what the poster thinks himself. I don't believe for a minute that "the Portsmouth kids are bad" has ANYTHING to do with whether they are voted into the conference or not... and to suggest that is a very cheap shot.
Heck, two teams in the SOC already play Portsmouth and two others already scrimmage them. Is it the perception that the kids will "be bad" if they are in the conference but not be if they are NOT in the conference?? I don't think so. It's just a cheap rumor that is being perpetuated by an individual or two..... and it is pure BS !!
As I said in an earlier post, I don't care if Portsmouth (or East, or Waverly, or Minford, or etc. ) is in the SOC or not. I just go to and enjoy the games that the (stupid  ) SOC coaches schedule. Perhaps the AMATEURES should stay out of it.
