With 3 or maybe even 4 solid runing backs and an offensive line that is proclaimed to be the Bulldogs strength; the rain should have no effect on Athens tonight - or any night for that matter ... I actually think a rain soaked field could help the BUlldogs this year .. especially against a team like Nelsonville-York and its super fast back Derek Arnold ... Unlke the Gregory years when we prayed for sunshine; I might just be wishing for wet fields all season long.

Some folks might want to look at a little history lesson between these two rivals. Sure Athens has been down for most of the last 20 years but a quick check of recent games might temper the predictions.

Much has been made of the so-called "Miracle at Memorial" in 2002, and while Athens had an emerging improving team that year, GAHS was arguably the prohibitive favorite as they were on their way to an SEOAL championship having already disposed of Jackson, Marietta and Logan; the prime contenders. That Athens left town with a 22-15 win doesnt tell the whole story. GAHS was inside the Athens 10 yard line four times in that game and came away with no points. The last straw was in the closing seconds when the Devils were inside the five and simply couldnt punch it in. Credit the Bulldogs! And the loss resulted in a co-championship with Marietta.

The next year, 2003, Rutter Field in Athens; a game I have called "The Roamin in the Gloamin." In the second half a fog rolled in so thick that I couldnt see the field from the stands. Donnie Johnson picked up a loose ball and rambled down the GAHS side of the field for the winning score and a third heartbreaking loss for Athens in SEOAL play that denied the Grant Gregory led Bulldogs a championship.

Two years ago Athens was playing out their commitment to the SEOAL before departing for the TVC. Every other SEOAL foe had pummeled and embarrassed them in a very hard farewell. GAHS went to Athens for their final SEOAL game and again most thought this would be more of the same, but the Devils had to fight for everything they got and were indeed fortunate to escape with the win.

GAHS also opened with Athens last year and again won but not with anything resembling ease.

I'm simply saying that nothing comes easy with them and we'd best be prepared to play to the whistle until the clock reads :00 in the fourth quarter.

15 minutes till the "ERA OF EDDY" begins.....I have chill bumps just thinking about it...Can't wait.. I am glad to see that the AD's still continue this game...I don't care what Athens reasons for leaving the SEOAL were this is a huge rivalry game and we get to watch it week 1...I say kudos to both AD's and I hope both teams have an injury free game....

Not your typical Athens-Gallia game that's for sure .... Gallia tried to run, run, run (which is odd) and Athens was there to stop it ... Gallia did shoot themselves in the foot a lot with turnovers and penalties ... but that's part of the game ... maybe they need to re-hire SKY HIGH TO take back over the offense and put the spread back to work ...

Athens indeed has a fine and upcoming team. Preseason polls have them challenging N-Y and Meigs for the TVC Ohio. They clearly outplayed the Blue Devils last night or perhaps should I say they outexecuted them.

The game came down to turnovers. GA turned the ball over three times; once when they were goal to go at the one. Athens did not turn the ball over. GA stopped themselves more than even a very aggressive Athens defense did; witness one series where GA was penalized on five consecutive plays.

The entire game turned on two plays IMO. Athens had just completed their lone drive of the game with a TD to go up 7-0 shortly before the half, but the game was still managable from a GA standpoint. That is until they fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and Athens got a shortfield TD to go up two scores.

The Devils OWNED the third quarter. I believe Athens only had the ball for 3-4 plays. Twice GA was in a goal to go situation; once at the one. Converting either or both of those and it's game on again. But we didnt and the fourth quarter was simply a matter of watching time run out and Athens coming away with a well deserved, hard fought win. The Devils fought just as hard...no shortage of effort from either side, but effort cannot overcome poor execution and that is something our coaches and kids will have to continue to address this coming week before heading to Hillsboro.
