That is, I'd be surprised if Marietta is able to put up as many goals as they did against Zainesville. However, that many goals against any team is impressive.
Athens pretty well dominated Logan this weekend but was able to score only once. Ball control was enormously better than the first match and use of the entire field was much improved as well. Still, I'm sure Athens would've liked more than one than one goal against Logan. Many great looks at the goal with only a few commanding shots. Marked improvement on offense from game one to game two, though Chillicothe in the first game was more of a championship caliber opponent.
It took a PK in the District final last year for Athens to defeat Marietta. Should be a great early season match up for both teams, probably with a low score. If Athens can continue to learn how to operate offensively as a team, controlling the ball and using the field, they have a great shot at a win at home.

Marietta's sweeper from last year (morrison) is now striker and the striker (schwendeman) is now sweeper. It seemed to have worked against zville but zville is also a weak team. The inexperience of those two players at key positions could hurt them. In the end, i think marietta comes out with the W over athens.

This game should be a preview of the sectional final with the new sectional divisions.

I doubt Marietta and Athens will be ranked so that they would see each other in sectionals.

The OHSAA has changed the SE District from East-West to Northeast-Southwest. So if there are 4 sectionals in the district you're correct, if there are only two sectionals then you may be looking at a rematch. Chillicothe will be in the Southwest portion.

Any way you slice it, all the strong district teams (with decent skill and athleticism) will have to play each other smart, learn from each game and stay mentally tough. Tonight's match up will give both teams a chance to improve. In the end, the team that learns to play as a unit the best will probably prevail in the District.
Should be a perfect evening for the Marietta/Athens match. No matter how the sectionals line up in this or any other year, you have to beat strong teams along the way to emerge from the District. While its still awfully early, tonight should be interesting.
Prediction: Athens 2, Marietta 1.
