Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
I have it on good authority that if we were not in the hard economic times that we are at the moment that Shawnee State would be working toward this goal. However, the word is that they cannot justify spending money on a football team in the middle of a recession when the science department needed more labs. My question is, if SSU put together a football team that played games on Thursday nights and scheduled around OSU on Saturdays, would the local community support the team. My first impression is definitly, however there has always seemed to be a disconnect between the university and the local community for some reason. Would football help to narrow that gap?

I heard that they were looking at starting a program next year.....
The money is there as they are spending money for turf for the soccer team to play on.

I would love it if Rio Grande would also do this.
Re: Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
The community would support only if they won. I went to portsmouth high school last year for a game between the some of the oldest rivals of all time...Ironton-Portsmouth. The crowd was pitiful. Many will flcok to their new stadium this year, but if they dont put a winner on the field, the crowds will dwindle again.

Heck no. Rio Grande would be a better place. More central to southeast ohio. Heck Rio's been undefeated since 1950!!!!!!!!

There is no planning in place for a team nor a timetable for this goal. It simply doesn't make practical sense.

Imagine SSU going DII
Athletes from OVC, SEOAL, SVC, TVC, SOC and Ky staying and playing local.
Now step into Cincinnati and Columbus to get athletes.
I would say yes the community would support it.

I can't stay on topic when the idea is so far out there. With the way the economy is, it's not going to happen! Simple fact. With the renovations and everything else that is going on down at Shawnee there is no way the have all the money to be able to start this program. IT WOULD TAKE WAY TO MUCH MONEY!

It would also bring in a lot of money.
With Football would come a marching band. More local kids staying home. $$$$ tuition.
More Cheerleaders. 100+ kids on Football team. Some on Scholarship but many paying tuition. more Money.
Even Bad Football teams make enough to be self supportive.
For every scholarship kid there would be two tuition students.
Enrollment and housing would explode.

There is a saying that most academic scholars do not like. But, its true.
"You are not a true university until you have a football team."

It would bring in a lot of money, but cost 10X more!
NO (0) Schools Shawnee's size and only about 5 at the D-1 level that athletic dept's make money. It just doesn't happen. When you look into the cost of equipment, travel, coaching staffs, scholarships, facilites among other costs 80 more people at the school doesn't even touch that!

We need less people like you in this world. Thats the exact type of negative thinking that keeps Portsmouth and Scioto County from moving into the 21st century. I guess no other university has ever raised the funds to start up a college football team. Especially the size of Shawnee. So, how did all these football teams develop? Big Bang Theory?

And call them and ask how their budget is doing?
They are PRIVATE schools. At Shawnee we have one of the lowest tuition rates among state schools in Ohio. There is just now way to have it done! I'd love to see it to... I think it'd be really cool. But trust me they have talked about it and people have studied it and there is just no real possibility unless a lot of things would change.

Do you not know that Scioto County is probably the hardest hit county by the economy the way it is in Ohio. There is no way that they are going start one. It wouldn't make them no money. It would only send them in the hole!
