Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
Re: Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
The double edged sword is that in order to get support, area football players need to be on the field (which would be great). However, local athletes bring the local crowds and no increased revenue for the area. So yes, SEO would support the local kids, but would the program be able to survive?

Different angle Southern Ohio economic depression hits very hard Appalachian poverty ( lack of education ??? ) Football at LOCAL universit(ies)y would offer MANY opportunities for LOCAL kids to GET A DEGREE that otherwise would probably not Those degrees turn into jobs, businesses, successes measured outside of football, and well into the future of Southern Ohio.
Local College Football + Local players = area improvements thru educational opportunities and individual sucesses where there otherwise would not be !!!!
Would football at SSU generate money for the college can be debated
Would an additional 20 college graduates from southern Ohio impact our economy and create success stories my stance is absolutely

Shawnee State will have a football program, just not yet. Remember, the school is only around 25 years old, the newest and fastest growing state university in Ohio. They barely have enough classroom and office space so they are going to do what they should do and invest in education and facilites first. They are already in the beginning stages of a new science facility and they still have more dorms, lecture halls, offices, parking, rereational centers and so much more left fo do. So SSU will have football but dont expect it for another 10-20 years. Hopefully Spartan stadium can last that long and they could take that over one day. I think Shawnee is starting to become a more well known univeristy and is more respected now more then ever so that helps but its still a ways off. And another thing, most colleges and universities dont make any income off of football directly so thats not a huge deal unless they are in the red by more then its worth.

Shawnee would have no trouble fielding a competitive team from the start. They can use the new portsmouth field i heard it was rockin saturday nite.10000 people thats alot of dollars filling the coffers of p-town!College football would be great i would go!
Re: Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
Portsmouth does not support the Shawnee basketball team even back when they recruited all local kids. Shawnee is what it is , a small school that kids who don`t want or can`t afford to move away can go to get an affordable education.

WTIGER I believe football is alot bigger than bball, ohiost program supports sports that are not popular as football. Also with Shawnee going into a new league that has football[kentucky christian 500 enrollment]and they also will be the biggest school in the league.Yes football will be a big money cow with the right scheduling and the area talent pool.

I might add that Shawnee is the most affordable school in the state and with a slow economy history points to more enrollment.

Just cause it affordable dont mean enrollment will go up. Only people that would go to Shawnees games regularly are the players families and the students. You gotta have something more than just affordablility to bring players in.

Ohio State has the largest athletic department in the country, supporting 36 varsity sports.
BUT, the only sport that makes a profit for the department is Football.
OSU has lost money in every sport they offer, except for football.
So to say that the fans of OSU support sports that are not as popular as football, is a little bit wrong.

Beginning this fall SSU is in a conference that sponsors football but I don't believe they have any plans to develop a program.

i wouldn't think it be feasible in this economy to start a football program. i have a tough enough time supporting local high school teams.

Re: Would SE Ohio Support A Football Team At Shawnee State
Boy, the IQs are still at rock bottom down there. NO COACH is going to limit himself ( and the program) to inferior local players. Count on it, the staff will recruit much better players , not only from Northern Ohio, but also go after better players from other states as well. No one in their right mind will limit the program ( and losing) to inferior local players. Won't happen.
So now the question becomes, will a program be supported locally with few locals playing, most folks interested in big time FB ( Ohio State) and a regional campus playing in a popular fan league ( MAC) with some local flavor playing D-I ball ( O.U.) AND an area economy in the outhouse ? Too expensive for a program that probably won't have much local support because of few locals who will get to play & competition from better Ohio colleges with higher interest from fans.
