G & B.....Waverly and Wellston did not face each other from 2004 through 2007.

The Rockets played South Point and West Jefferson home-and-home in those four years.

Boilermaker,

I guess I was just thinking of the recent games that I have seen (and coached in). We have stolen some games from the Rockets over the years when I've thought they had the better team. They seem to always be very physical up front, with some tough-running backs that you're going to have to deal with for 4 quarters. One thing that always amazed me coaching against them in week 2 was watching the Jackson/Wellston game film from the week before. I can't even remember how many times we just looked at each other as a staff and wondered how in the world Wellston had lost to Jackson. It just seemed like Wellston always made some critical mistakes that kept the monkey on thier back. We could always count on them not playing like that against us! :)

boilermaker what was coach Mantell's reasoning behind kicking off deep to Waverly with 2:05 to go in the game when Wellston obviously needed to go onside and try to get the ball back :?:

Hoping to pin them deep and get a stop. Would have worked to if the officials would have called that push off on third down pass play .

Be successful with an onside kick and you don't have to worry about officials making a call for you. There was no-one near Price on the 3rd down cath so who knows what you're talking about. The officiating crew struggled all night so don't make it sound like you got the short end of it. How about the phantom interference call against Waverly on a 3rd down incompletion which would have had the Rockets punting? That drive stayed alive and they ended up scoring. The official making the call was clear across the field. We could all comment on the officiating but it was equally bad and did not affect the outcome.

Waverly looked really good in the 1st half and not so good in the 2nd half.
Wellston looked bad in the 1st half and came out with attitude in the 2nd.

Waverly's inability to stop the run & contain on the ends permitted the Rocket comeback. It also appeared to me that players weren't taking the Rockets too serious after they jumped out to a 20-0 lead. Thought it was going to be a walk in the park.

This was a total reversal from last week when Jackson racked up 21 points in the 2nd quarter but then the Tigers came back out shut them down the 2nd half.

Many Tigers fans were questioning the risk of further injury to Malone by giving him the ball with .26 to play when anyone could have ran out the clock. He got hammered on that last play (actually two plays in a row) and was being checked out on the sideline as we left. IS THERE A GOOD REPORT ON MALONE THIS MORNING?

Hopefully he will be good to go next week along with Shane Murray, who did not dress last night.

The Tigers need to put a full 4 quarters together and they'll be fine.

tigers2010,

Relax, bud, I'm from Waverly. The Tigers won and I think they were on the short end. The officiating was bad for everyone.

Giving the ball to Kevin Malone was running the clock out. Waverly had to run a play so they didn't get a delay of game penalty. This wouldn't be an issue if someone would've blocked that guy, which should've happened.

I wasn't responding to you Trooper about the officiating, I was responding to boilermaker.

Malone was already hurt and needed to come out to avoid further injury. I know Waverly needed to run one more play, that's why I said "anyone" could have run the ball. Taking a knee would have worked. Once that 3rd down play was over the clock was under .25 seconds. That was two plays in a row Malone got hammered. Yes, "IF" the line blocks we aren't having this discussion but Wellston knew what was coming and they were determined to administer some pain - which they did. I just hope Kevin is okay!

Waverly looked very good in the first half and really played inspired on both sides of the ball.
In the second half Wellston came out and moved the ball down the field and scored. I think the Tigers would have put the game away earlier but the previously mentioned "phantom" interference call kept the Rockets drive alive.
In the end Waverly picks up a big win going 1-1 through our tour of Jackson County.
The Tigers host Vinton Co. who played right with Jackson for a half Friday night.
The refs desperately struggled in this one.

Instead of having Malone hammered on two straight plays, why not kneel the ball instead of letting one of your better plays get injured?

Thats funny ,you call it a phantom call. When clearly two defenders hit Wellston's #24 Ryan Darnell Long before the ball got there.
I not on here to complain about the officials ,I wouldnt want their job. I was explaining to HSFBFan what the thinking was behind kicking it deep. So you guys argue all you want about it .Its over it wasnt called ,but it was a push off the second time on the night (the other was on the first score).Respond if you want but I know what I saw ,and what is on the film we watched this morning.
HSFBFAN
The Wellston coaching job is up for bid on a yearly basis fell free to apply. You will find out its easier to coach from the bleachers.

I dont care what anyone else thinks- giving the ball to Malone at the end of the game was one of the oddest things i have ever witnessed at the end of the game when the other team had no timeouts and not enough time to get the ball back in my life.

here is why!
#1 The young man was injured- i dont care if he wanted to go in or what - was it worth getting him hurt in a game that was in the bag? And for those of you that were not there- he was banged up and everyone could tell- trust me! He had a horrible limp!

#2 Take a knee!!! Even if Malone is o.k.- take a knee- if we fumble the ball and they scoop it up and run it back (remember the Jackson game?) we lose!!!

#3 If you think that we should run it then let the QB keep it!!! He could run around before going to the ground- or better yet- take a knee!

#4 When you realize that even the Radio people were even calling it crazy, among other things you quickly realize that there were a lot of people upset! I only heard Waverly radio, but a friend of mine said that it was on the Jackson radio also and the announcers were going crazy.

#5 Walking out of the game it was as if Waverly lost!! Everyone and yes i mean everyone was talking about the handoffs!!! I have never witnessed that many people screaming at a coaching staff from the stands like they did friday!

#6 in the event that there was another reason for running the ball like they did i will admit i am stupid and i didnt understand it! (And they are the coaches and i have always supported them)It just seemed that the risk was much more than the possible reward. I thought it was funny that people are saying that it was the lines fault- listen they were probably as shocked as everyone else about the hand-offs.

#7 If that were to turn in to a season-ending injury or a fumble return for a score everyone on here would be calling it stupid.

But it worked out and everthing is o.k.- lets just hope if we are in this situation again that they will take everything into consideration instead of taking chances that many felt were not neccessary.
