Remember he led the nation (Div.1) in scoring his senior year @ Morehead and was drafted in the NBA by the SACRAMENTO KINGS!!! None of these guys have that on the resume!!! ALL by the way, he was also drafted in the 4th round by Minnesota Twins!! I REST MY CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All that's great but the title was best player in the soc not who accomplished the most after the soc. How many SOC titles did SW win in the Roberts era, how deep in the tourney did he lead them?

I can't believe no mention of Chris Clark from Valley. The guy didn't even have a senior season due to a knee injury, but still received a scholarship to Mississippi State, where he contributed as a freshman before off the court problems led to him being dismissed from the program. Of course, the one player mentioned from Valley was also a dandy. The poster simply said "Merritt", but I'm assuming he was talking about Mark...who started his collegiate career at Tennessee-Chatanooga before finishing at William-Carey College (Mississippi) along with his two older brothers.

As for South Webster's TEAM accomplishments while Roberts was there.....they were NOWHERE NEAR as good as when Aldridge was there. I remember watching them play many times and their offense was 1-4 with Roberts at the point and he created EVERYTHING.

hbk123: I'd say Brett's content with where he's at in life. He decided to go the baseball route and maxed out at Triple A before hanging them up. Not anything to be ashamed of in my book.

fbnut: yeah, this title is best player in SOC of all time, not best player on the best TEAM in SOC. Brett had limited talent around him. Regardless of what he accomplished after, he was first team all state and averaged around 35/game his senior year. I think that puts him in the conversation regardless of what his team did or didn't accomplish.*

I think you could make an argument for Roberts but I think you have to in some way look at his teams accomplishments or lack of in some way also. At every level great players are always judged by the success of their teams. Staker's team his senior yr was not loaded with talent, no size,no depth, avg coaching and he took them to the state championship.

Then start your own thread with TEAM in the title. Brett Roberts IMO is the best! He played with some very non-talented kids, but made them better. He was a beast, inside and out! As well as a class act on and off the court. There have been many players that our worthy of consideration, but my opinion and vote goes to Brett!

How would that thread be named, "Best player on the best team" maybe. I have no problem with people stating their opinion as long as I can state mine. My opinion is when you start talking about the best player ever in the SOC then I think that kind of a player should have had some team success. I don't know that Roberts teams did or didn't win the SOC that's why I asked, I don't remember them making a deep tourney run but I may be wrong that's why I asked.

I have to put Aldridge and Thoroughman up there high on the list. As for the SOC 1, what about Cocenhour?sp from Eastern and Jeremy McLeod from Western.. They have to be up there.

Top player all time is tough.

I'd say Nick Aldridge! He scored over 2,000 points in his career. Had a state championship, two regional titles, and three district titles. SOC player of year maybe twice? They're have been several players from the SOC in recent years playing at the next level. You could add Brigham Waginger although he only played one year in the SOC. I remember seeing Andrew Burelson play he was tough as well. I would like to see some sort of list of all time players though that could get interesting

Pea, Who else would I be talkin' about? :-D :-D :-D Absolutely money from the foul line! :122245 :122245
Cocenhour, Neil Leist and Arnold King were also unstoppable from Eastern but Leist and King weren't in the SOC when they played. TVC conference at that time. Not old enough to remember Frazier from NB but do recall Jenkins as being pretty good, as well as Loper.
Mark Merritt was the one I was referring to at Valley. Staker from the 'Burg was very good, loved watching him play in HS and at Miami. The Barlow kid from NW also was unstoppable. Thought he could have played at a higher level than he did. There were so many good players, It's hard to pick just one. Aldridge and Scarberry seems to stand out, to me, as the most complete players I have seen in my lifetime. But, I'm just a pup

Roberts over Aldridge at SW all day. Aldridge barely out scored Roberts for a career and Aldridge had the 3 point line for 4 years, Roberts had it for one. If you add up Aldridges number of post season games it adds up to almost an entire season. In essence Aldridge played a total of five seasons to Roberts four and still barely out scored him.

Pol Pot. Webster did have some talented kids that were some what handcuffed. Everything had to go through Robert's. He had to touch the ball at least once or twice every time before anyone else was allowed to shoot. The kids played scared and afraid to make mistakes, they knew they would get yanked. Truth is Robert's didn't want it that way, he was very unselfish as a player. Webster was also D III at that time and had Burg and Peak in their sectional, one of those two got them every time.

Watcher,

Webster was Div 4 at least thru Roberts junior year. Because Green hammered Webster for the Div 4 sectional championship at SP in 87. They may have moved up to Div 3 his senior yr though. Also, Webster was in the small school division of the SOC back then too - and didn't win one title when Roberts was there...something a lot of people have either forgotten or never knew!

sweetpea

Sweet Pea you are correct, they moved up his senior year. They beat an 18-2 or 17-3 very good Oak Hill team by 20 in the first round. Second game of the tournament they were beaten in a close one by an 18-2 or 19-1 Peak team that lost in the regional semis to Burg that came out of the other side of the sectional bracket. Burg then lost in the finals to??
