Just to whet everyone's appetite for Friday's big game...Thursday at Warren: Girls Varsity Soccer game at 5 O'clock and Guys Varsity Soccer game to follow at 7 O'clock vs. Marietta. These are always great games and very competitive, I'm sure that these young ladies and gentlemen would also love to see your support. Come out and support your Warriors or Tigers

And yes I understand this is the football forum, but there are a lot of sports and they have all worked hard and deserve your support

Where exactly did I slam any "young players"? I gave Wheeler praise for being possibly the best running back in the league. Although it will be interesting to see Wolfe and Wheeler battle it out Friday night as they have established themselves as some of the top running backs in the area. Evidently stating the obvious of Marietta getting ran over by New Philly and PHS is inapproiate. My respect for Marietta runs deep, they play probably the best schedule in the league besides Logan every year. Although I think a slight downgrade in the schedule would actually benefit them. Personally I see Marietta winning 4 of their last 6 games after Warren and finishing with a very respectable 5-5 record considering their riguous schedule.

Getting back to breaking down the game. The most interesting matchup of the night in my opinion being Warren's defense against Marietta's offense. Marietta has an established running game that will most certainly give Warren fits. Although I don't know how the offensive lineman injuries for Marietta will come into play. Warren's big men showed some holes last week against a couple of quality running backs. Although I give them tons of credit for adjusting in the second half and for the most part containing South's running backs. Warren's secondary has seemed impermeable through the first 3 games. Collecting 8 interceptions and making a number of big plays. Warren's 3 best athletes are in the secondary and it shows. If Marietta can't establish some kind of a passing game in Warren's secondary, I don't know how they are going to score consisently. Wheeler will undoubtly get his, just got to keep the big plays to a mininum.

sorry to hear marietta has the dreaded injury bug, would like to see both squads at full strength for this one. great win for warren last week. their mettle was tested and they passed. both teams played morgan, and both had decisive wins = push. both played aaa w. va. schools, marietta lost, warren won; i would say that phs is a little better simply due to depth and mr. wasonga. so....push. marietta fell to new philly and warren beat belpre = push because while marietta played the tougher opponent, this probably also led to the injury situation they are currently in while warren played a weaker opponent but has pretty much everyone healthy. warren is playing their first home game of the season while marietta is in the midst of a 6 game road trip = advantage warren. the buzz in vincent is palpable. it has been a long time since there has been this much excitement surrounding the football program. is anyone camping out by the pond to get a seat? lol! i imagine the hillside will be packed. i'm also sure marietta will travel very well. in the end, if mr. wheeler is missing 3 or 4 of his starting linemen and the starting fullback, it will be tougher to find open running lanes consistently. don't get me wrong, he is a great back and he will get his yards. i'm just not sure he can get all he would have with the first team blockers. i'll take warren 30-20. good luck to both teams, hope for a great game and no further injuries.

What would Spicoli have to say to all this. Something like "Harsh Dude.

schenck11 is right, I think I even said something like this. Let Friday take care of its self and all the rederick will be settled until 5 minutes after the game anyway. Good luck to both squads.

I don't know who, but someone said the Warren A.D. doesn't have the "stones" to schedule Darby and New Philly.

That made me laugh. When I was in school Warren was playing PHS, South, and dominant Philo teams while Marietta was calling River, Caldwell, Morgan, and 0-10 Cambridge teams for non-conference games.

The point is schedules are made when A.D.'s believe the games are good fits. The schedule made for Marietta was created when Marietta experienced a resurgence in the program. The Warren schedule was made when Warren was 0-10 or struggling to win 2 games. I am sure both programs wish things were different. Marietta probably wishes they had games where they had a chance at winning, and Warren probably wishes they didn't have the cupcakes on the schedule. It is what it is. Bottom line is with a win Friday one program will have a huge confidence builder and will virtually secure themselves a spot out of last place in the league. Which is something I think each player doesn't want on their record.

btw, didn't the school board railroad the A.D. who scheduled the current non-con's?

Warren's current AD didn't schedule those games you are talking about when you were in school.

Cambridge never had 0-10 teams BTW, nice try.

Philo was a state runner-up or champion when only top 4 teams from the region went to the playoffs. River is D6?! Also, there was a time (approx 10 years ago) when Marietta played St. Mary's, WV.

schenk11 I know that you have a wealth of information. Amd I bow to you knowledge base. But you have the Bobcats records and know for an actual fact that Cambridge has never had a "0fer" season. They have played football up there almost as long as Marietta. I was just wondering if you know about all the teams? I would be curious to hear from a Cmbridge poster on this. If this is true that is a tremendous accomplishment for any high school program.

Cambridge went 2-8 in 2002 I believe, and 0-10 in 2001. For the later part of the 90's and early 2000's Cambridge was dreadful. It wasn't untill 2003-5 that they turned it around and became competitive.

Philo, in 1996 when Warren lost to them in the season opener went 9-1 and lost in the Regional Final.

***I totally forgot Joe eitel still kept this stuff.
I went back and looked,
Cambridge went 3-7 in 2001 and 2-8 in 2002.
Unfortunately they don't go farther back than 2001. In 2001 the Cats went 6-4.

Warren's current AD is the coach, Pifer

Before him they had Grider, and he was the coach during the 0-10 seasons

Before him Warren had the same AD for 20+ years Dave ?. He scheduled the Mount Vernon and Steubenville CC, and Big Walnut games in 02. Which only made the 0-10 seasons worse. Then again, the program took such a drastic down turn, it was quite shocking.

Rich Goodrich from Bridgeport, OH took over the Cambridge program after the misery years. I thought they were 0-10 one year.

I remember the name. He was the one responsible for taking the team from a shambles. Wonder where he is at today, is he still coaching?
Swami is right those teams were contacted and scheduled during the Devol years and maybe even before and Warren could have played with those teams. When they came on the schedule Warren was down and the last year at Mt. Vernon fielded only 27 players, their second team was bigger to the man that our varsity, Lord what a long trip for a whuppin. I do remember attending a Belpre/Marietta game in the mid t late 90's I believe and Marietta struggled with the Eagles. Not sure exactly what year that was though.

Was browsing through the DII computer rankings New Philly, Big Walnut and Warren were all DIII last year in the same region. They must have re-arranged the nuumbers again.

The AD was Dave Fouss. He was a big part of the now infamous SEOAL expansion too. Not a necessarily a bad thing . . . it just seems to have unraveled a bit.
