Remember when Dave Fouss was a champion of the expansion, it was pre 9/11, gas prices were still 1.87 a gallon, the league was trying to compensate for the imbalance due to Point Pleasant and River Valley's departure. Zanesville was playing local teams in tournaments, Chillicothe Ironton and Portsmouth all wanted in our league.

I think it was a great idea, really made the SEOAL a power conference. The logistics and externalities made it impossible to continue.

In between Grider and Coach Pifer, Warren suffered through some rough years under longtime wrestling coach turned football coach Martin Santini, as well as a year under current Pburg South coach Jon Bolen.

Santini wasn't the AD those years, and he also nearly beat Marietta in the highest scoring MHS WHS game 44-42. Wasn't that game at don drumm a few weeks after the hurricane ivan flood? Dirt was coming up from the turf all game, jerseys looked like they played on a baseball infield.

That game was in 2003 when Cameron Amigo and Ryan Boley were seniors and it was played at Warren.

Hurricane Ivan was in 2004.

Santini got the football job two weeks before the season started after Grider was let go. He was promised three full seasons, got three seasons not three full seasons, hard to count the first one with only two weeks to get a staff in place and get organized. Team was in complete disarray, turmoil and dissention. Tough task, especially after the one year for Coach Welsh, and two years of Grider, the older players had 1 year of Devol, 1 year with Welsh, and two years with Grider, starting in junior high, his first season. Teams need consistancy, each man who takes the football position at any school should have a minimum of 4 years, maybe five, then if the team is not moving forward, he should look at himself, his staff and maybe step down. Those were a nightmare for Warren football. The football program seems to have turned the page on that time frame and looks to be on the right track. Hope it continues.

But the question is who will they replace Pifer with that will continue the the good things going on presently? He IS retiring and the position WILL turn over AGAIN! Will they go outside or will they keep in-house? I realize this is premature and they will cross that bridge when they come to it, but it is on a lot of people's minds. A lot of rumors out there. Some are good, but some are disturbing.

i definitly agree...Welsh should be the head coach next year...he should actually still be the head coach now continued from the 2002 season when he was head coach...he may have a chance now that holbert is off the school board and not convincing everyone to vote against him...i would really like to see him back at the helm...he is not only a good coach but a great guy and friend...he is a very inspirational person and is a great leader...any way i think warren wins by 14...
...go one...

No need for that on here, LoveSponge425.

The Warriors still have seven + more games before we speculate on next year's HC.
Welsh's return has obviously made a big different in the team's offensive ability and the confidence of players in general.

What I have herd is welsh knows that he is the Offensive coach. He should stay their. Warren needs to get a new young head coach that will stay and keep building the team up in the right way.

be careful what you wish for. you bring in a young head coach and you have to get the kids to buy into his system, which will probably be different than what they have been running the past three years. even before that the kids have to trust him and listen to what he's teaching. will the more elder assistants go along with the "young gun" and come back and help coach? will he change any traditions? didn't work too well for RichRod up in ann arbor last year. (yes, i know they're 2-0 this year, but wait until meatchicken actually plays someone, not directional state or charlie cheeseburger's drive-thru defense) you go with a proven commodity that the kids are already comfortable with, and let them know well ahead of time to make the adjustment smooth and quick. now, whether welsh is that commodity or not, i do not know as i am not close to the program. there seems to be real stability now in vincent. i'm sure the powers that be have thought this through, and while they may not have made a decision yet, they will do what it takes to keep the program on the upswing. kudos to coach pifer and the warren community for sticking it out, putting in the effort and making themselves better. good luck the rest of this year and next (except for week 1, lol ). hope ya'll can represent washington county in warren's first ever football state playoff game. what a retirement present that would be for coach pifer!

I bet this will be a good game. I'd pay to watch it if I didn't have a prior commitment in Gallipolis.

There are rumors everywhere that the game may sell out. People are even getting worried and buying there game ticket ahead of time. The way the white out shirts are selling, I have no doubt that it will be a record crowd. It’s great to see so much support behind our team this year. I think it will be a great game and the white out should be amazing. The kids are so excited about the game I wouldn’t be surprised it the student section doesn’t take up half the bleachers tomorrow night. My prediction on the game is Warren 24 Marietta 14.

Welsch never really had a chance to establish himself last time around, he shouldn't have been let go so soon without a legitimate shot. If he can maintain the current progress he should without a doubt stay. I like his offensive play calling and he will be able to open it up even more with the Leffingwell boy coming in next year. He was definately good addition and he is a best candidate. I'm thinking Warren's offense runs wild in this one.

Warren 35, Marietta 10

I don't think it is possible for Warren to "sell-out"
they could run out of seats, but there is ample standing room.

When Warren played PHS in 99 at Warren, that is the largest crowd I have seen at (Warren Needs to Name the Field). That game had perfect weather, I hope this one has better weather than what is forecast.

btw. can someone explain this white out thing? Is it a student section white out or they want the whole warren crowd in white?

That is why they are called rumors. I can’t imagine the game selling out either (if that even would be possiable). I don't even remember the last time I seen the hill side filled.

Hopefully thought we can have a record crowd. No matter the attendance it's nice to just have so much excitement back around the Warrior football program! It’s been a long time coming.

PHS and South also one year filled the stands and the hill side. Remember hearing that the gate at one of those games was over $14,000. There is room to see the game, just may not be a great seat. And the white out is for everyone. They have sold over 1,300 t-shirts and have a new order in the office.

The Times has the all time series in the paper today
Warren 10 wins Marietta 8 wins this will be game 19 in the series.

Not any longer, they sold everything they had by lunch (over 100). There will be 125 more shirts printed tomorrow to sell at the game. I’m telling you it is going to be white.
