Re: SOC2 @ (7-1, 3-0) Valley @ (6-2, 2-1) Wheelersburg
I've been pretty quiet on this game, but now we are getting closer and I'm kinda bored here at the office so here is my take.... Not that anyone cares....
First off, the field is going to be pretty bad. I just drove by there when I went to get presale tickets and it looks ok, but you can tell it is pretty soggy. I think that bad field conditions will help Valley's passing game and negate some of Burg's speed advantage. As long as the rain is not coming down during the game, the weather is Valley friend tonight.
The Indians biggest problem tonight is the loss of Brice Crabtree. He was our most important defender and also a part of the offense. Not having him on the inside will really hurt the Indians tonight.
As far as the "Burg curse" that a lot of Valley fans and fans of other teams talk about, I think that is something that is in the past. This group of kids have beaten the Burg in their careers and they feel like they belong on the field with every team they play. If the Burg beats and even if they shutout the Indians tonight, it will not be because of any crap that has happened in the past 45+ years. It will be because the Pirates executed and outplayed the Indians tonight.
The keys for Valley to win are simple, but not easy to accomplish. On offense, Valley must take care of the football. We can't put the ball on the ground and expect to win at Ed Miller Stadium. We also cannot commit stupid penalties that put us off schedule when it comes to down and distance. I feel as though the Indians can and should move the ball in the air, but we must run the ball better than last week. This means getting 3-4 yards and keeping the defensive line honest and not allow them to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback. If Valley is able to do these things, they will find a way to put up some points and be in the game late in the 4th.
On defense, it comes down to containment. A lot of the defensive success that Valley will have or will not have comes down to a handful of players. BJ Coleman, Eli Garrett, Alex Hartley, Luke Keller, David Shultz, Zack Bukiewicz, and Alex Holcomb must bring their absolute "a" games for Valley to be successful defensively tonight. Those kids are the main defensive ends, outside backers, and corners. Their ability to keep Craigmiles and Shankwiler between the tackles will play a huge role in how this one turns out. The Indians must gang tackle and contain and they will be in this game til the end with a helluva chance to win.
I feel as though Burg is the favorite, but this Valley team will not quit and will play til the clock shows 0:00. That is what I love about these guys. I think this will be a well played game, and I would not be surprized if either team won.
To the Valley players.... Play with the heart, pride, and attitude that you have the whole year and see what happens. There is a lot on the line, but this is why you play. I have watched a lot of you guys grow up and I know that you have the talent and the balls to win tonight. Play your cans off and believe in each other.
Go Indians!!

I'll be attending this one. Is there a decent parking situation at Wheelersburg or should I get there pretty early?

Well, I've heard from a reliable source that BOO gets to provoke people and get them banned. So I'll try to keep my tounge, even when he's tried to be cute and inferred that I was certain other poster that I happen to know quite well.
Me, Crab's brother, crab_apple4, (the late great) pmow3, etc. have discussed this game quite a bit this week and we all have our different opinions on what gives the Indians their best chance to win tonight. Basically, we all agree that Valley needs to play big early and gain a little momentum and confidence. They must not put the ball on the ground, and they need to stay away from the catastrophic play. The talent level seems to be very even, so IMO turnovers are the biggest factor tonight.
Good luck tonight Indians, play tough and play hard!

Parking is not great. Park on a side street and walk up the hill. Easier to get out afterwards too.

I have stayed out of this all week to keep from getting in a pi$$ing contest with all the Valley "knowitalls" so now i will post ONCE. BURG by as many as Woodward wants to hang on them. I simply do not understand why anyone thinks Valley has any real or unreal chance in this game. FOR GODS SAKE ITS VALLEY!!!!!!!!!!!

Get there early, but prepare to walk anyway. It's part of the mystique of playing up on the hill at Ed Miller Stadium.

What side streets should I head for? Are they all fair game?

Any and all are fair game, but they usually fill up fast. There are plenty of streets available though. The toughest part of the walk is the hill.

pmow got banned, and for ridiculous reasons.....if something isnt done with this situation, I'm done on here for good. It's sad.
As far as the game, I coached these kids in pee-wee, and now they are in the hunt for an SOC title. I know they can do it, the have the skill, talent, and heart to do it.
Good Luck tonight Indians!!

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully I'll get decent parking and a decent seat.
Good luck to both teams, but I'm telling you - DON'T COUNT OUT VALLEY!
They have the talent to make this a very good game.

We used to always have everybody meet at the Valley Pool after school or, if the fight involved a kid or two from Clarktown we would go over behind the Jefferson Twp FD. Man, those were the good ole days.
