While most football programs want to be like Ironton, I am proud to be a part of this small D5 school with a community that might not be as large as Ironton, but I can guarantee you we support our athletes more than they do. I'm talking about a school district that has a mandatory drug testing policy for students involved in ALL extra-curicular activities from grades 7 to 12 (Band, Sports, Choir, Cheerleading, etc). A community that built a facility from private funds (2 million dollars) that is a model for the ones that are being built around us everyday. An athletic booster organization that operates on a $500,000 dollar budget annually. A state championship and soon to be 18 league titles.

Ironton has a ton of support also. If you look at the number of topics on this site, one out every four has the name Ironton in it. Oh...btw...please limit your topics and posts to more relevant high school football stuff.

While "The Tank" has some history, I want to put a warning out to the NY fans that are making the trip. You have to park in somebody's driveway because they have NO parking lots. It smells, because of the recent rains, the sewage is having trouble exiting to the Ohio River . And I understand that Asa the rent-a-cop who watches a gate on one side of the stadium will not allow you to enter or exit so watch where you park and where you enter.

As for the wins record...should have been accomplished last week. Although you won last week, I'm talking about the state final game when he decided to "Go For It" instead of punt.

Last year, this was the same talk about the game and how bad Ironton was going to stomp our ___. I'm sure the 150 fans that made the trip and the football team was scratching there heads when they left Boston Field. While we start 7 sophmores, they play with a lot of heart.

Good Luck Bucks...another league title and another playoff birth.

Hey...where was fanofsports after the Athens game? Haven't heard from that Ironton fan.

Oh, and Noreply, thanks for your support.

You sir are very confused about a bunch of things.
1.There is plenty of parking.Across the street at the church, they charge a couple of bucks and do watch the lot during the game. Also the Ohio University has parking on the highway side of the stadium I think they do charge 5 dollars.
2.As for the rent-a-cops,those are full fledged Lawernce Co. Deputy Sherriffs.
3. The gate people do allow you to go out with a hand stamp and return, that said I think they limit that to adults.
4.Im sure no one from Ironton was rooting for Athens,we would actually root for Nelsonville so that if we beat them the points we get would be greater.

Heres to a safe trip and a great game.
Also, like I said above about the parking,The O.U lot is at the 141 and 52 exit.
Get off the ramp turn right at the stop light, then turn left at the Shake Shope into the lot.
As for the Church lot,get off at the 52-141 exit and turn right at the light go straight about 2 blocks, then turn left go out about 2 blocks turn left again follow the curve till you see the church on the right.

Ill be out on the front lot selling split the pot at 545,we sell arms legnths for 5 bucks.Come over and ask for me and Ill give ya the Hosscat special of your height of ticket for 5 buck, unless your shorter than me,then you get my height.

Again safe trip.

He's not breaking stide either! The finish line is, hopefully, a long way off and we keep him coaching another dozen years or so ;-)

buckeye fans, i called the victory , over athens on your thread last week. i said you all would expose them, and you did. we have nothing but respect for the ny program, we too, are a very small community, and about a dozen boys away from d5 ourselves. while i hope we win the ball game, and set the record. i know it will be a dandy game. if we don't turn the ball over, and close out games after we get a lead , we will be a hard out. we kinda fell asleep in the 2nd half last night. i like the passing game, we are showing, like to see more option, and more itilization of the wide side of the field. but we seem to really be clicking. can't wait till friday.

hey, tiger fans, lets not forget mike burcham , in all this . he has been with coach lutz, every step of the way. not to mention , all the amazing asst. coach's we've had through the years. i could name dozens, but would surely forget somebody , and offend them. but we all know them.

i only hope that , if and when this record is broken. that bob and mike are both in a bunch of pictures together. YTB. :-D

What does Ironton's schedule look like for next year so far? Is it about what it was before 2006 when Ironton was independent?

Too bad none of the bigger papers in Ohio didn't pick up the news of Lutz tying the record.
I hope someone gets a press release ready in the coming weeks if Ironton wins and faxes news of the record being broken to the Dispatch, Plain Dealer and Enquirer so people outside the distribution range of a West Virginia paper see the news..

it is sad 71. if you watch the news from columbus NOT 1 THING is mentioned about the history that is being made in I-TOWN!! football friday night/1st and 10 nothing!!

good luck to both teams but, i see i-town win this by 2 or 3 tds. i-town is just to much of a punishing team. and there starting to throw the ball more! ;-)

There's a bubble around I-town and inside it, no one worries about what is happening outside it unless it's about Ohio State, and maybe the Bungles... That is why the OSHAA record book presently thinks Lutz is 9th in Ohio alltime wins with 301. No one took the time to send in the documentation to update his record. No one thought to prepare or send out a press release to the major newspapers or TV stations in Ohio telling them about Ironton's accomplishment because they don't matter.
No one in Ironton looks at the Tank and thinks "The Tanks are the grandfathers of the Detroit Lions, or the Tank is where the NFL Thanksgiving Day Game tradition started in 1922" So no one tries to update wikipedia with that stuff..........So no one outside LawCo knows that..and they should..

So few people know just how bright the light is hidden under the Bushel basket.

It looks to me like the fans from both teams in this game respect each other. That is always refreshing to see.

Here's to good health for both NY and Ironton....

Some of this is found on the Irontonfootball.com website on the Tanks if read thru it. More information can be gleaned from the Book "Home and Away, Football along the Ohio river" and the Detroit Lions website.

This is an extremely short summary:
The Tanks were the among the most successful semi-pro, pro teams of the 20's. The Tanks were so good that the Portsmouth teams folded, and Portsmouth businesses finally banded together and re-started a team to compete against Ironton. The Tanks began playing on Thanksgiving Day to increase the gate revenue and years later, after the Tanks folded due to the depression, many of the better Tanks, Presnell, etc moved on to the Spartans who carried on the Thanksgiving tradition to P-Town. After the Spartans moved to Detroit, the new owner was asking the players for ideas on how to increase attendance, and they told him they had played on Thanksgiving Day and they usually got a good turnout as nothing else was happening that day. Wilson scheduled the game at Tiger Stadium and the rest is history...

According to Home and Away, the Tanks played a game the day after Thanksgiving in 1920, but their first actual TGD game was in 1922 against the Huntington Boosters. After that they always played a game on Thanksgiving day.
You can read the last part of it in the Detroit Lions history web page. It also says Glenn Presnell and his wife selected the Honolulu Blue and Silver colors of the Lions in 1933.

What I'd give to have the Lions to add the Tanks parentage to their history.

The Tanks early success made Portsmouth re-create their team as a better team and once the depression shut down the Tanks, the Spartans were significantly improved by the addition of old Tank players that made them good enought to be bought out in 1933 and become the Lions who won the NFL Championship in 1935. To me that links the Tanks, Spartans and Lions into a lineage.

It's amazing that even the IFC website, the Wikipedia Ironton Tanks webpage say nothing about this.

Wouldn't it be great to have Terry Bradshaw (or whoever is there at the time) on FOX pregame to have a live feed on Thanksgiving day 2022 of a game of between the Tanks and Spartans recreating the 100th anniversary of the tradition???

Great post, mama. It appears Ironton will have to bring NY back down to earth after the surprise win against Athens.
I predict Ironton will send the young bucks home cold, shamed, and probably with some aches and pains.

Maul 'em Tigers.

IT makes you people mad that NY WONT LAY DOWN FOR IRONTON
Guess what NY BEATS IRONTON AT THE TANK.

According to OHSAA, Ironton has four open dates next year, weeks 3, 6, 8 and 9.

There is a plethora of teams with open dates in week 3, including Gallipolis, but not so many in the other weeks.

I think they can and I think they will!!!
I love how all you guys think we are going to lay down and take a nice butt whooping and go home so Lutz can get the record!!!!! Win or loose this will be a close game. NY is not some bottom feeding team or just some panzy to put on the schedule so you can get a win. After the game is over and NY has come away with the win what are you going to say then?? The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes are coming down to WIN!!! They don't care if the game is played in the Tank or in the parking lot, The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes"Expect Victory". Don't take us lightly and don't start looking ahead to the playoffs just yet!!!!!!!!

Theres a Long Train Runnin baby, and its full of Nelsonville-York Buckeyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The great thing about Wikipedia is that any one of us could update the Ironton Tanks page. Any one with a copy of Home and Away should, since referencing the book will make it less likely someone will delete the revisions.

As for the game, I think I'll take the Tigers by 21. Ironton's got a line that will shut Arnold down, though if the Buckeyes can open up the long game they could most certainly make the game much closer. As always, I'll wish both teams the best of luck and for an injury free week.

Go SEOAL!
