HAMILTON — Terry Malone is graciously accepting his dethronement.
The former Badin High School football coach retired in 2003 as Ohio’s winningest coach with a record of 360-117-8, but he’s on the verge of becoming No. 2.
Ironton’s Bob Lutz recorded his 360th career win last weekend and could become the lone record holder Friday, Oct. 20, when the Tigers host Nelsonville-York.
“He certainly deserves it as much as anybody,†said Malone, who plans to call Lutz with his congratulations whenever the historic win comes. “He’s been there a long time, and he’s had a heck of a program.â€
Lutz, who’s 360-84-5 in 40 years at Ironton St. Joseph and Ironton, didn’t coach in 2006, but returned to IHS the following season. This is his 37th year with the Tigers.
“When he came back, I knew it was going to happen, so I never had any thoughts that I was going to remain as the winningest coach,†said Malone, 76. “I used to see him at Ohio State clinics. He’s a great guy. Very down to earth, just what you would think of somebody from Ironton. Blue collar all the way. There’s not a bit of falseness or insincerity in him.â€
Malone was 0-2 against Lutz, taking playoff defeats in 1979 (21-6) and 1989 (14-13). The matchups featured old-school coaches who preferred simple, hard-nosed football.
“Ironton was always like that, even when I played them in high school,†Malone said. “It was a steel mill town, and that’s the type of kid they got. They were beer players, not champagne players.â€
Malone said he’s not melancholy about losing his state record. He’s more proud of the fact that his Hamilton Catholic/Badin teams only had five losing seasons in 46 years.
“To me, that’s more important,†Malone said.

Re: Malone about to be dethroned as Ohio's winningest coach
Ironton has only had ONE losing season in 41 years, starting in 1969. However, in the 1960's, Ironton only won 34 games in ten years and had 7 losing seasons in the decade. What a huge turn around in the program. IN one decade, Ironton went from being a butt of jokes around the Tri-state to the team that everyone else wanted to be like.
Coach Lutz himself has only had one losing season in his entire career.

First off...Congrats Lutz!
i do have a question....Did Malone coach all his years straight....as the article said, Lutz did not coach in 2006...So if Malone did, then he is the longest/winningest coach with out a break!
Its like Archie, only 2 time Heisman winner, if Tebow wins he will be a 2 time winner, jus not back to back!
Once again nuttn against Lutz, GREAT coach!!
Congrats again!!
