NY would have qualified in D4 and hosted a playoff game in D6. Just not our year in D5.

Arnold leads Buckeyes to title

By JOE HIGGINS
Messenger staff writer

NELSONVILLE — Another season and another championship belongs to the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes.

After a convincing 32-6 win over Vinton County Friday night, the Bucks retained their familiar spot atop the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division standings for another year.

“It’s been a great season for our young men. They worked hard in the offseason and it was payoff time tonight,” said Nelsonville-York head coach Dave Boston. “We had to play football, going out knowing their tradition over there and knew they’d come and play us tonight but our kids stepped up and played outstanding in the first half and got the job done.

“We’ve done those same things all year. Our kids play physical and get after you. We’re just proud of their efforts all year long.”

The Buckeyes close the season at 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the TVC-Ohio, their sixth title in seven seasons. They shared the title with Athens, who clinched a piece of it last week. The Vikings finish at 1-9 and 1-5 in league play.

The game was never in doubt as the Vikings were not only missing several key players to illness but also had to face a fired up Buckeyes squad celebrating Senior Night.

The Bucks tacked 12 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter after quarterback Nathan Dean hit Isaiah Andrews in the endzone with a 10-yard touchdown pass and senior Derek Arnold slipped in later for a one-yard score.

Arnold has stamped his name as one of the stronger running backs to wear the Orange and Brown. After already amassing impressive statistics over the past three seasons, in the 10 games this season, Arnold raced to 1563 yards on 240 carries, equaling to more than 6.5 yards per carry. He scored 20 total touchdowns, 19 coming in the running game.

Arnold ran for 229 yards against the Vikings and scored three touchdowns. He tallied 170 rushing yards in the first half alone. Arnold would also score on 13- and 45-yard jaunts. Nelsonville-York’s final score came from Daniel Kline on a 40-yard reception from Dean. Vinton County placed six on the board in the final stanza after Steve Thompson capitalized on an 8-yard rush.

Several senior Buckeyes ended week 10 on high notes including Mychal Mitchell who gathered six tackles, Zack Hook who notched three tackles and John Wine who tallied two tackles. Nick Hunter, one of the senior leaders on defense, grabbed eight tackles with a sack and senior Todd Dennis helped anchor the offensive line.

Hunter and Arnold spoke highly of the program and their time as Nelsonville-York Buckeyes. Hunter expressed his gratitude to the coaching staff saying he “learned everything he needed to know about high school football” from the coaches. Arnold credited his standout career to his offensive line saying “they made me the player I am.”

Boston talked about the seniors and the program.

“It’s a great group of seniors, they led this football team all year. The expectations at the beginning of the season from the area probably wasn’t that we were going to be in this position and it takes great leadership to get in this position and they did a great job all year doing that for our football program. We’re real proud of them and we hope they get another shot in the playoffs but we’ll wait and see how the chips fall.

“We have to replace good football players. Anytime you graduate from this football program, you’re a good football player. Like we’ve said, we reload and we’ve got a lot of young kids that are ready to step up into those places and positions and get the job done. We’re excited about our future here.”

The news wasn’t as good for the Buckeyes afterward. Initial computer rankings on joeeitel.com have Nelsonville-York finishing ninth, one spot out of the playoffs. The official rankings will be released this weekend by the OHSAA.

I think coach just served notice that the Buckeyes will be a force to reckon with for the next couple of years!!!!

A 38 year streak ends and te result is the Spartans are in while the Buckeyes are out. That is a little payback for all those years of walking over the Spartans.

Thing is, not many teams can say they had a streak of 38 consecutive anything. Congrats to the Spartans on making the playoffs and congrats to NY, AHS and THS on winning the TVC's. I guess Athens County would be the area to beat in the TVC.

I think Alex started TVC-O play with 40sum straight losses...thats a streak right there! lol...Glad to see Alex has gotten on the right track...NY will always be at or close to the top...but im glad to see some parity in the league these days...well at least with the top half anyways...Congrats to all the TVC teams this year!

Yes Grillo was out...he didnt even make the trip over to NY...Not saying it wouldve had any implications on the outcome...but i do think VC wouldve gotten on the board a little quicker with the Grillo factor out there...just sad to see his season end one week earlier than everyone elses.
