Re: 2010 REDS
If the Reds can have a good month then they should set themselves up nicely come the All-Star break
They have 16 home dates this month, SF,KC, LAD,CLE,PHILLI
They have 11 road dates this month, STL, Wash, SEA, OAK
I think they can win 18 or 19 games!
Winning 15 would be great.

Re: 2010 REDS
To add on to the great report card that GAHS4EVER took time to post!
The reds are currently 4th in the Majors in hits (505)
6th in Triples (14)
3rd in HR (70)
5th in RBI's (268)
4th in Total bases (840)
5th in OBP (.346)
3rd SLG% (.458)
3rd in AVE. (.275)
Those stats With great defense has kept them in the fight up to this point!
There pitching is middle of the road right now, but they do have a few really good pitchers who are helping to carry the team. I think they need to reshape the Bullpen and with Volquez coming back at the All-star break the rotation should hold up well for the second half. I think this will continue to be a good year for Reds fans!!!!

I know, I know.....there's a reason they play 162 games and ultimately the cream rises to the top, so I'm not going overboard, but this IS a 50 game report card and JMO.
You win with defense up the middle, and the Reds are certainly getting that. Nothing to complain about in Hanigan, Phillips, Cabrera, Stubbs. Hanigan is hurt but Hernadez is filling in nicely. Both Reds catchers are hitting over .300 which is a bonus.
The Reds OF combo of Bruce, Stubbs, Nix, Dickerson, Gomes, Heisey, etc have all taken their turns with solid defense and timely hitting; the emphasis on timely. The group is operating without Dickerson and not missing a beat. It would be nice to get a little more offense out of Stubbs especially, but even he has some very clutch long balls. Gomes is the most underpaid player in the NL
Rolen is the heart and soul of the team and his value cannot be measured in just statistics. This was never more evident than the way the knowledgable St Louis fans welcomed him back as an opponent. That the first third report card is so much batter than last year is revealed in the fact that I have yet to talk about Votto and Bruce, who have thus far combined for 18 HR, 58 RBI, and a combined .300 BA
That takes us to pitching, and as I suspected before the season began, it has yet to be proven that the Reds have enough in any area of the staff. Were it not for the quality starts of Leake (4-0 2.45), I dont know where the Reds would be in the standings. Arroyo and Cueto are carrying ERA's over 4 and Harang and Bailey over 5. Masset, Lincoln (injured) and Fisher have frankly sucked, and I cant remember the las ttime Cordero pitched a clean inning. He has three losses and three blown saves on his resume, and if the Reds are going to continue to compete, they need a shut down closer. The only bright spots IMO are Owings has pitched reasonably effectively and Rhodes has been lights out.
I believe the set up men need to improve, either with the people we have, a trade, or whoever might be ready in Louisville (although with the year they are having I dont know who that would be). Getting Volquez back could help the starters, but then even if that happens, who do you take out of the rotation? Bailey? He's been the least effective of the current starters.
I guess I would grade them as follows:
Offense....................A-
Defense...................A-
Hitting for power.......B+ (Half the games are played out of the band box)
Getting clutch hits.....A (Lead the majors in come from behind and walk off wins)
Starting pitching.......C+ (Consistency needed to avoid the July firesale)
Long relief/set-up.....C (Beyond Owings and Rhodes, the cupboard is bare so far)
Closers....................C (Thought to be a strength, championship teams closers dont have -6 in losses/BS)
Winners take losing players to injury in stride and other step up and get the job done, and that is certainly the case here as well.
Would love to see your grade for Manager Baker. I would give him no higher than a C. He has cost the Reds at least 4 wins with simply non fundamental decisions. However, I would like to hear some feedack from you guys.

Re: 2010 REDS
I give Baker a B-. I think he has done a good job managing the arms he has! I think he has let Rolen step up and lead the team. Every manager has not made the right move or left a guy in or pulled a guy and it cost his team a game.

I think it was a great move getting Stubbs out of the lead-off spot as well as moving Phillips up to 2nd in the order.

Re: 2010 REDS
Joe West has got his game going, 3 ejections in two days. I'm glad I got him in my umpire fantasy league.
