Cordero continues to make an old man out of me by issuing a 4 pitch walk to a .229 hitter to put the potential winning run on base, but the pitcher's friend, a little 6-4-3 action ended the threat and the game. VERY close play at first but the call favored the good guys and for the second time this year the Reds are ten over .500 at 45-35. Halfway mark of the season comes tomorrow, can you believe it?

Reds league leading offense and defense is carrying the day so far. Great major league debut by Wood, who took a 2 hit shutout into the 8th. When he walked the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth, he was replaced by Masset, who gave up two hits, friving in the tying runs, which were charged to Wood. Walks have a way of doing that.

Rhodes started a new streak by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth, setting up the 10th inning heroics and heart stopping ending.

Thought you......were done.....with the Reds? :122248

My son and I were in the stands today at Wrigley Field. Third row back from the field along first base line by the Reds bullpen. If you ever get a chance to see a ballgame there, do it. Only Fenway comes close for history and ambience.

Last year they would have imploded like the Cubs did in this one, but they just kept playing great D and taking there cuts until they caught a break.

Because you love the teams you support, over the years there can be occasions where your love becomes like a love/hate relationship as your team rises and fall on the decisions made by management. In the thread that you had to dig up from two years ago, you seem to imply that because of what I said that I no longer loved the Reds. You oughta read the rest of that thread. I wasnt the only one very critical of the decision to move a 40-100-100 man for three players of no repute.

It hasnt been that long ago on here, that I re-raised the argument for the wisdom of that ridiculous trade, and speculated that for all of his strikeouts, he remains one of the most productive hitters in the game today. I guess those who dont think he has a place in baseball wouldnt like a Mickey Mantle or Reggie Jackson on their team either because of all their strikeouts.

He is not a defensive player, and he is not a 3 or 4 hole hitter on a good team. But he is a great 5 or 6 hole hitter and this year he is once again among the league leaders in HR and rbis, and is carrying a BA of around .275

I stand behind what I said at the time, and even though I am sometimes critical or perhaps just notice things, that in no way means I dont love a team I have been following faithfully for 52 years. And I still have that collection of 1970 and older Reds cards that will one day belong to my grandson. I have several Perez and Morgan rookie cards, a Bench, a third year Pete Rose and a second year Big Klu (cant spell his name) in my collection.

I.....understand......good explination......

A couple problems with this point.
1) Adam Dunn could hold the jock of Mantel.
2) "Because of all their strikeouts"
----Mantle averaged 115 strikeouts per year, and never struck out more than 126 times.
----He also did this while averaging every season for his 18 year carrer, 163 hits-36 HR-117 walks-113 runs-102 RBI.
----Adam Dunn on the other hand has never played more than 120 games in a season that he struck out less than 126 times.
----Over 10 seasons he has also averaged less walks, hits, runs, and rbi's, while batting 50 points lower in average than Mantle.

gahs4ever wrote:Im not trying to put Dunn in the HOF. Im simply saying that some of the best power hitters of all time were also the highest K batters as well.

Dave Kingman is another whiff king that comes to mind; although I'm wondering in Dunn's lifetime BA isnt higher.

If you dont like Dunn, that is fine, but to suggest that there isnt a place for him, even in the NL where he has to put on a glove is going too far.

I would take his whiffs even now in the Reds lineup, put him in the 6 hole, "hide" him in left field, and take him out in most games in the late innings for defense when the Reds are ahead. In the AL, on my club he wouldnt need a glove, except of the batting variety.

No way!! You put him in the Reds lineup today and his strikeouts become like Cancer! In a week the entire team will be hitting .220

Cub HR; 2 by Colvin

That was Leakes first win in a month! He hasn't lost any either, but he has given up some untimely runs to earn a few ND. Glad to see him back on track.
