Re: Any D-1 Offers for Logan's Patrick Angle?
Congrats. Good opportunity at YSU. Heres the competition at YSU at QB --
last years recruit was Kurt Hess from Dayton Chaminade who was red-shirted
http://ysusports.com/football/bios/hess.htm
he should be considered the heir apparent as the only other QB on the roster was a walk-on from Hubbard and a partial schollie from Poland.
Locksley played and was an all star player in Champaign, Ill while his Dad was an assist coach at Illinois. After his Jr. year they moved to Alberquerque for the NMU job. There he only played 4 games his Sr. season before having his season end with injury. He needed surgery to mend.
I'm not sure if they will look at any other QBs to come in. It will be a very competitve position.

With that being said, OU is a fine school and as I mentioned has a great threesome of head coaches.
My post is no more out of line than the drivel you guys are spouting! We went through this with Conrad, yeah he set DII records, but news flash, that is not DI. Do your math as well Cosgrove quiting was not 20 years ago, and your OSU count goes back further than Cosgrove.
On another note, I did not say that Cosgrove quiting was/is the reason OU is not taking Angle. Frank and the boys don't even know who Cosgrove is. They did not take Angle because they do not think he can play QB at that level. And quess what, neither does the other 118 DI teams as of yet!!!!!
I love how even though there are NO other offers it is all Ohio Universities fault!
On a side note, ever stop to think Ohio University is staying away from Logan players after the last one they took simply walked away mid season as a starter and player in the middle of the night? Places get a reputation!

If OU still holds a grudge for a kids that was there going on 20 years ago, then that would explain a large part of their problem.
Since that kid "walked out" on OU, Logan has sent 3 kids to Ohio State winning 11 letters, 2 of them were starters on a Rose Bowl Championship team and another was a special teams contributor with 3 pairs of gold pants.
Another kid from Logan OU "passed" on went on to set division II NCAA passing records.
I'm not blaming OU for not recruiting Angle. They make their own decisions, and Solich is doing a nice job.
But your posts is a little bit out of line.

Thank you all for not paying attention to Paladin. Log onto any YSU message board and you will soon agree with all YSU fans opinion on this Paladin guy. He is actually taking credit for getting Angle here. What a joke!
Anyway I invite any of Pats relatives or friends to flip burgers and have a beer with us at any game this season.

Actually Mike, Pat got himself a schollie at YSU. All I did was talk to Wolf in recommending him as a prospect, getting his attention. Your B.S. is as bad as your Right Wing politics.
BTW, Wolf also liked the other players I recommended. However, they accepted schollies elsewhere. Can't win them all.

Do your math.
Cosgrove was at Ohio U. from about 95-96 (15 years ago, note, I said GOING ON 20 years) while Jackson and Burris were at Ohio state from 92-96 and 94-98. Neither of those would "precede" Cosgrove.
The elite players in division II (of which Conrad was one) could play at the lower level D1 schools. If you don't believe that, take a look at NFL rosters.

Congrats again to Pat. Hopefully he will have an opportunity to contribute. I know that with Locksley coming in, Hess (their RS freshman from last year), and the rumor mill flying that they are trying to get another QB to transfer, the competition will be extreme. The thing is, they have 3 young QB's and if one gets the job, will the coaching staff stay with that person for the next 2-3 years? I wonder if Patrick will have the opportunity to contibute in other facets of the team (i.e. defense)?

YSU's coach knows he could be a candidate for S or OLB as well, as we have talked. He will get a good look at QB. Looking forward to seeing Pat play at YSU.
Surprising class coming in with Pat. Looks pretty good. Pat may be a red-shirt.

LOGAN — Could Logan’s Patrick Angle be playing quarterback in Happy Valley to open the 2010 college football season?
We’ll find out in about six months.
Angle, the Logan Chieftains’ record-setting quarterback, signed Wednesday to play college football at Youngstown State during National Signing Day.
With competition for the YSU quarterback job wide open, the best QB standing will be under center for the Penguins in their season opener at Penn State in late August.
“They told me they wanted me to come in and compete for the job right off the bat,†Angle said, “but I know it’s going to be a competition no matter what. They have a kid who graduated high school early and enrolled in January, then they had a redshirt freshman and a couple (other) freshmen. I know I’ll have to keep working.â€
And what kind of offense are the Penguins going to run?
“I think this year they’re going to run a spread offense,†Angle said with a grin.
It’s not known for sure what kept NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Series schools (Big Ten, Southeastern Conference, Big East, etc.) from heavily recruiting Angle. Some feel that his 6-foot-1 height may have played a factor; others feel FBS schools just don’t have much respect for potential athletes in this part of the state.
But if schools such as Cincinnati and Indiana, as well as several from the Mid-American Conference (including Ohio University) had done their homework and factored in his heart and his head, he would have more than fit the bill… either as a quarterback or just about anywhere else on the field.
Several prep football observers around the state were stunned that Angle wasn’t heavily recruited by FBS schools.
Among them was former Ohio State quarterback Greg Frey who, after seeing Angle quarterback the Chiefs to wins over Lancaster and Canal Winchester this season in his role as a color analyst for SportsTime Ohio television, wrote several letters to FBS series schools encouraging them to give Angle a look.
They didn’t look very hard, however. And so it was that Youngstown State — a program coach Jim Tressel led to NCAA Division I-AA (now the Football Championship Subdivision) prominence before coming to Ohio State — entered the fray for Angle late but convinced him during a two-day official recruiting visit last week that he was wanted at YSU.
“They’re big on football up there,†Angle said. “The head coach is a Youngstown guy. I loved the campus. It’s real nice and the stadium was nice, and that really helped.
“It was kind of frustrating (not being recruited by FBS schools),†he admitted. “At this time last week I had no clue where I was going. Findlay was in the running, but that fell through.
“I was up there Thursday and Friday last week and I loved it. Friday morning coach (Eric) Wolford, me and my dad (Jeff) sat down and had a meeting, and that’s when they offered. I actually gave my verbal commitment when I got home later that day.â€
He’ll get a partial athletic scholarship with a chance to turn it into a full scholarship.
Youngstown State, a member of the NCAA’s Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) — that division has post-season championship playoffs — lays claim to four national championships and two runner-up finishes and has sent 21 players to the NFL.
Tressel built YSU into a national Division I-AA power during his 15-year stint at the school, winning four national championships and finishing runner-up twice while going 135-57-2 from 1986 to 2000.
The Penguins compete in the Gateway Conference along with FCS powers Southern Illinois and Northern Iowa. Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner attended Northern Iowa.
The Penguins have made the FCS playoffs only once since Tressel left following the 2000 season. Wolford, the Penguins’ new head coach, expects YSU to be back in the playoff hunt on a consistent basis… and he wants Angle to be a part of that hunt.
“I was in the running at three or four other schools, and with my brother (Michael) being up at Otterbein that was always a place I could go,†Angle said. “I know the coaches up there, and I know they wanted me… but they knew the chances of getting me weren’t very likely because they thought I could go somewhere else (to a bigger school).â€
He admitted to being “a little†disappointed in not being recruited by BCS teams, “but, after all, Youngstown State is still Division I — just not (FBS) Division I. And I get to play (in a post-season) playoff. I think it will work out well.â€
A two-time first-team Division II All-Ohio quarterback, Angle was named state DII co-offensive Player of the Year by The Associated Press after last season, becoming the first Chieftain to ever receive one of the AP’s major football awards.
He is also a two-time Southeastern Ohio Athletic League North Division Player of the Year as well as two-time Southeast District DII offensive POY as well.
Former head coach Dale Amyx and new head coach (and offensive coordinator) Kelly Wolfe made the radical decision to re-tool the Chieftain offense prior to the 2008 season to accommodate Angle’s outstanding passing abilities.
The results were staggeringly successful. Logan evolved from a power-running team into a spread-offense passing team that threw the ball much more than it ran.
As a result, Angle totally re-wrote the Logan High School football record book. He owns at least 26 LHS single-game, season and career passing records.
His 2009 season numbers (all school records) included 193 completions in 302 attempts for 63.9 percent, 2,546 yards and 26 touchdown passes, with just five interceptions. He finished the season throwing 128 consecutive passes without an interception and set the school record for fewest career interceptions… an amazing number considering Logan’s pass-first offense.
For his career, Angle was 377 of 596 (63.3 percent) for 5,112 yards and 53 touchdowns, also school records. He threw a touchdown pass in every regular-season game in which he started (20) and was 22-2 as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.
He led the Purple & White to back-to-back 10-0 regular-season records… only the sixth and seventh such regular-season marks in school history.
His favorite target in the spread offense was his step-brother, Mason Mays — a two-time Division II second-team All-Ohio receiver — who wound up with seven LHS receiving records.
Mays broke his own school mark for receptions (60) this season for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns. His final career receiving numbers, all school records, were 121 receptions for 1,703 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Mays caught every one of those 26 TD passes from Angle.
Patrick followed his brother, Michael, as quarterback of the Chieftains. Combined, the two Angles never lost an SEOAL game; they were 30-0 in the league, with Patrick winning the last 11.
As a result, the Chiefs will carry an SEOAL record-tying 34-game league winning streak into the 2010 season, Wolfe’s first year at the helm.
When Logan did run the ball, Angle was the team’s leading rusher. He gained 418 yards on 117 carries and eight touchdowns in 2009 and ran for nearly 1,000 yards in his varsity career, making him just as big of a threat with his feet as with his arm. That 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame was more than enough to bull over several potential tacklers.
And Chieftain fans will have one more chance to see Angle on the gridiron as a prep athlete as the quarterback will compete in the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association North-South All-Star game to be played April 23 at Ohio Stadium.
For the first time, the game will be played the night before the Ohio State spring game, which will allow for all of Ohio’s top players to take part. In recent years, the game had lost players to the Big 33, which pits Ohio’s best against Pennsylvania’s best.
“I’m real proud and excited. It’s a culmination of a great career,†said Amyx, who stepped down recently after 30 years with the Logan football program. “It was fun coaching him and it was fun watching him play. I’m just like a fan — you stand on the sideline and constantly go ‘wow, did he just do that?’ And then look at the film and see ‘yeah, he did do that.’
“He’s just a great kid,†he added. “It’s not all what he did on the field, it’s what he did off the field too. A leader, a great student, great character… just fun to be around and fun to coach. Being my last couple years as head coach, it was a great way to finish up with him at the helm. You look at our record the last (five) years with an Angle at quarterback.
“It’s special to me too because (Patrick’s late mother) Debbie was a real good friend of mine. I miss her a lot. We taught together for years and I think about her a lot.â€
Wolfe had the pleasure of building the Chiefs’ spread offense around Angle’s abilities and has no doubt he’ll make a terrific college football player as well.
“I’m excited and happy for him,†Wolfe said. “He deserves everything he gets. He works hard at it… there’s nobody that’s been more dedicated than Pat has to everything we’ve done.
“I think he’ll adjust (to the college spread offense) quickly,†he added. “That’s one thing about Pat… he does adjust quickly. Anything we did that was new, or tried something new, he was right there with us.â€
That’s something Wolford found out as well last week.
“Their head coach was grilling him over (situations) pretty good and (Angle) was able to answer. He wasn’t stumbling over his feet,†Wolfe said. “He’s right there with them. I think he’s ready. He did everything he could do here, and I think he’s ready for more.â€
Not only has Angle been a terrific football player for the Chiefs, but he recently became just the fourth LHS boys basketball player to reach the career 1,000-point plateau and a three-year starter for the baseball team.
Patrick is the son of Jeff and Jennifer Angle and the late Deborah Mathias Angle, a member of the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Always a grounded, humble young man, Angle readily admits he’d like to be calling the plays in YSU’s opener at Penn State, but knows there’s a lot to do before that.
“That would be pretty awesome,†he said, “but right now I just have to work on getting better.â€
