Ineligible Players
A player says he has moved from one local school district to a neighboring district and is found to be lying. He is in fact commuting from his old district and it can be documented he is commuting. What are the penalities assessed on a basketball team for playing an ineligible player?
Re: Ineligible Players
Forfeiture of every contest the player participated in and ineligibility for the remainder.

I'd talk to the principal of your school. The school principal is ultimately responsible for athletic programs under the bylaws of the OHSAA.

Re: Ineligible Players
It was a simple question. I do have an issue with a team directly benefiting from an ineligible player though. If you find it acceptable, that's your business. I don't!
Give the disgruntled parent crap a break. It's very simple, a player is either eligible and/or ineligible.
Now, what constitutes eligibility? Where they commute back and forth from school or the address they provided to establish eligibility? The two may not be one and the same.

Re: Ineligible Players
The district (pricipal) certifies to the ohsaa that all athetes are legal. First step is contact the school. The OHSAA will not take calls from individuals not associated with the school district.

I thought with the "new" rules in transfering between schools u could live in one district and go to school in other if you are accepted into that school by the board of ed.

Re: Ineligible Players
It was a question. I haven't and wouldn't mention names or parties involved, even if there was a hint of impropriety. Especially so on an internet chat board. Some are hyperventilating without cause. It was a very simple question, that's all.
I was curious what the repercussions were to a team, who to report violations, and what constitutes eligibility for a transferring student/player.
Thanks for the sound advice.

Re: Ineligible Players
It happens every year, players are found to be ineligible, in just about every sport. If it is the case then it is the AD's fault for not making sure his transfers were living where they said they were.
Heres a follow up question. What if a kids starts the season on the team, but then his parents move to another district. Is she still eligible to play for the district that she started the season with?

Re: Ineligible Players
Players must establish themselves in a district before high school or have a residency in the district of attendance in which they MUST live. Gone are the days (supposedly) of having a p.o. box or a "guardian liason".

Re: Ineligible Players
As I understand it, no. No player can live in one district and commute to another, except, when they are incoming freshman, then s/he can select a school through open enrollment. However, if they have already established residency by going to school A (enrolling as a freshman), then there are transfer rules that have to be met. For example, if a student transfers to school B mid year, (and B is within 50 miles of school A), s/he must sit out that season. Furthermore, if this is not the case, it is up to school B to verify residency, and if there is something a missed (student commuting) then it is up to school B to self report. NOT School A. And I believe that is part of the problem, the OHSAA relies on school officials' integrity to report all possible infractions and unfortunately I have personally seen examples of ignorance of the rules, indifference to the rules, and worst yet, blatant disregard for the rules.

Why do I have the feeling that it is you ??

Re: Ineligible Players
i have seen parents rent an apartment in another school district so their child would be eligible to play. is that legal? especially if they aren't really living there.
