Don't listen to 78, he's still trying to figure out how his city job can get his boy on the intramural team at school.

Hats off to Nelsonville York. Congrats. Alex played like dog crap. They didn't get any flow in this game and couldn't get their offense going at all. If your gonna lose better to get one out of the way early so you can learn from it. Of course you don't want to lose but learn from this and come back strong.

In the Hardwood Heroes "Game of the Night," Nelsonville-York stayed perfect with a 59-52 win over visiting Alexander. Mychal Mitchell scored 21 points for the Buckeyes, who improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the TVC-Ohio. Hardwood has the recap of the game.

Great job Buckeyes! I can't even remember the last time NY started the season 4-0. I remember the last great season at NY was the 1997 TVC Championship team.

Keep up the great work Buckeyes! One game at a time!

The Buckeyes are now 2-0 in the TVC OHIO and have already matched last year's league win total, having gone 2-10 in the league last year.

This was NY's first win over Alexander since the 2002-2003 season.

Buckeyes stay perfect, knock off Spartans

NELSONVILLE — Mychal Mitchell and the rest of the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes let everyone know that they’re for real.

Mitchell led the Buckeyes with 21 points, and Nelsonville-York remained perfect, handing Alexander its first loss of the season 59-52.

The Buckeyes are now 4-0 and 2-0 in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division after Tuesday’s win at the Nelsonville-York Middle School. The win left N-Y coach Jay Kline more than pleased.

“It’s a defining win at this point in the season,” he said. “We have a lot of respect for Alexander and their program. We haven’t had a lot of success against them. For us to come out tonight and really work hard for a victory, it’s big for us, it really is.”

The Spartans beat Nelsonville-York for the first time ever on the gridiron two months ago. But the Buckeyes got a measure of revenge on the hardwood, beating Alexander for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

They did it on the strength of strong defense in the middle two quarters. Alexander (4-1, 1-1 TVC-Ohio) was held to just 14 points in the second and third quarters, and saw a seven-point lead turn into a two-point deficit. The Spartans made only 4 of 19 shots in those two frames, 21 percent.

“The third quarter I thought was the big thing,” Alexander coach Blaine Gabriel said. “Neither team really came out with a big burst right there, but they scored six straight and went up.”

Nelsonville-York took control in the third quarter. The Buckeyes outscored the Spartans 11-4 to take the lead, and they never gave it up in the final frame.

Up 37-35, Mitchell opened the fourth with a big 3-pointer to set the tone. The Spartans made a push — scoring 17 points in the last quarter — but the Buckeyes always had an answer.

“We were able to beat one or two guys in a situation and get an advantage and our kids just continually made plays after that,” Kline said. “You know, we knew (Alexander was) going to come. We knew they were going to go hard at the end. We’re happy that we were able to hold them off.”

After Mitchell’s 3-pointer put N-Y up 40-35, the Spartans were able to cut the lead to two points on three occasions. The final time was after two Ethan Williams free throws put the Buckeyes lead down to 43-41 with 5:08 to play. The Buckeyes Joe Frazier promptly sunk a 3-pointer the next time down the court for a 46-41 advantage.

“They hit some big shots, and our press — that’s been our bread and butter so far this year,” Gabriel said. “We just came out like we never got off the bus. We didn’t rotate across the back line all night in the press.”

Dillon Stalling scored with 3:52 left to put Nelsonville-York up 48-41, but Cody Lawson came back with a 3-pointer for Alexander. The Buckeyes countered with a driving Mitchell bucket seconds later.

Alexander’s Zach Bobo put a three-point play in with 3:37 to play, cutting the lead to 50-47. The next time down the court, Jared Dexter scored inside for another Buckeye answer. On this night, Nelsonville-York was able to stay a step ahead of Alexander.

Mitchell scored his 21 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field. He consistently got in the lane and got shots close to the basket or was able to dish off to give a teammate an easy look at the basket.

“He’s the quintessential slasher,” Kline said. “He’s very unorthodox athletically. He did pick up a couple charges, which I think you should be trying to pick up chargers on him because he’s going to the basket. Once we get him under control a little bit, he did a great job not only in scoring but also in making some good passes for us.”

It appeared the contest would be a shootout after one quarter. Bobo made a fade-away 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Spartans a 21-14 lead after eight minutes. But the scoring grinded to a halt after that, and the Buckeyes were able to pass Alexander up.

“We did make a defensive switch,” Kline said. “We went out of our zone for the whole entire second half and went man. Our kids did a good job of stopping their penetration.”

Bobo led Alexander with 17 points. Dexter added 10 points for the Buckeyes.

The Spartans will look to regroup from their first loss before hosting Athens on Friday.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board,” Gabriel said. “We’re 4-1. It’s a tough loss. But we’ll be able to step to the plate and we’ll correct the things and we’ll try to be ready for Athens on Friday.”

The Buckeyes will look to stay perfect Saturday at home against Trimble. They’ve already matched last season’s TVC-Ohio win total, and Kline said it’s important for his team to stay hungry for more success.

“Enjoy it, but be humble,” he said. “Continue to work hard. What got you here is what’s going to take you forward. And if you ever stray from that, you’re going to find yourself flat on your face in no time.”

I'm even more impressed that it was a clean sweep over the Spartans on the night. Even the junior varsity and freshman teams are off to a great start!

The Buckeyes could be at a major turning point in boys basketball......just in time for the newly renovated Ben Wagner Gymnasium to re-open next year!

A little early in the season to say that these are the top 2 teams in the TVC-Ohio. As competitive as the TVC is going to be this year, I would say that is downright arrogant. Better hope you dont choke on them thar words and that folks on here have a short memory.

I believe they were implying that they were the top two teams currently. Both teams came in undefeated overall and in the conference, meaning they were the top two teams. Give these kids a break. They are doing a nice job covering these games for our benefit and they do a good job. I am glad that this year they got everything together and it is more successful than last year. I look forward to following Hardwood Heroes all season long.
