Trojans win 7-2 over West in season opener

Portsmouth’s Josh Myers pitches against Portsmouth West at Branch Rickey Park Tuesday. Portsmouth won 7-2.slideshow Early in the baseball season it's usually the pitching that is on display, but in Portsmouth's season opener Tuesday, the Trojans brought out the bats.
Nine total hits from seven different Trojans coupled with a solid six-inning performance by pitcher Josh Myers gave Portsmouth the 7-2 home win over West at Branch Rickey Park.
"We are a very good hitting ball team," Portsmouth coach John Tipton said. "We put the ball in play and had quite a few hits. Even our outs were good."
Myers and catcher Brennan Howard had all-around performances as the batter and run producers in the victory. Myers went 2-for-3 while scoring twice as Howard, also 2-for-3, racked up three RBI's on two doubles and a walk.
From the mound Myers gave up just six hits and two walks while striking out five. Jeremy Scott relieved Myers in the seventh and closed the game with a strikeout and double play, the Trojans' third of the game.
"We had Josh (starting) tonight and he's just a super pitcher," Tipton said. "Ryan Monroe at third base made several nice plays and Lenny Collins turned several double plays at second base. We played super well for the first ballgame of the year and a lot of inexperience out there."
West jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff hitter Brandon Rawlins walked and advanced three bases on errors. Rawlins led the West offense with a single, an RBI and a run scored.
"We just didn't hit the ball when we should have," West coach Chris Rapp said. "Their pitcher had a real good game. Usually at this point of the year the pitching is ahead of the hitting and I think it was for us. We just couldn't get hits at the right time."
Portsmouth responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first before breaking the game open with a four-run second inning.
Short stop London Malone walked then scored on a Kyle Simpson double which was followed by a Myers RBI single and an Adam Bray single.
Howard gave Portsmouth a 5-1 lead with a double to deep center field that scored two and the Trojans led 5-2 after two innings.
The Senators managed a second run in the fifth when Cody Adkins scored on an error but Portsmouth added a run in both the fifth and sixth for the final 7-2 advantage.
West starter Anthony Knittel allowed seven hits and four walks as he struck out four in four completed innings. Mark Murphy threw the final two innings and gave up two hits and four walks.
"Anthony Knittel threw a very good game," Rapp said. "He was upset when we took him out but he was at 75 pitches... and we want to use him again on Friday.
"I was pleased with our infield (because) with guys on base we were able to get the third out," Rapp said. "We can only get better. That's what we're working on, to get better each game."
West continues the young season on Friday when it travels to Oak Hill. Portsmouth hosts Chesapeake today at 6 p.m.

Re: Portsmouth 2010 (3-1)
Thanks for the baseball updates, guys.......glad to see we're off to a good start.......it doesn't suprise me, with John Tipton in the dugout........he is a GREAT baseball coach and has taken several PHS teams to the state.......I remember him telling me this past year about the Trojans beating the #1 team in Florida when he was coaching previously.

Trojandave... Not sure if they were the #1 team in Florida in 1989, but Vero Beach was highly ranked and was very good.. We upset them in the opening night of their own tournament...

Re: Portsmouth 2010 (3-1)
Other teams from Portsmouth made the trip to Cocoa Beach after us, and Coach Tipton may be referring to one of those teams beating a #1 ranked team from Fla...
Re: Portsmouth 2010 (5-2)
No disrespect Tobia, but I don't think it matters where you post it. Too bad the schedule got changed, Burg vs Portsmouth went from 4 games down to 1.

Re: Portsmouth 2010 (5-4)
Josh Myers hit for his 14th straight hit in a row, in his first at bat, then it ended in his second, but this kid is putting on a hitting clinic so far this year, and still went 2 for 3, with 2 intentional walks.
our bats finaly came alive ,as everyone hit the ball hard tonight...lots of hits
