tfred,
That's closer to the number I was thinking when it was originally built. I had that exact figure in my head for some reason (3,200).

Regardless of the seating capacity, this tournament is going nowhere else.
I've said it and others have said it, Piketon wants to play there to give them two tournament atmosphere games at the location of their sectional tournament. Huntington does the same thing by playing AT Waverly each year.

It is a great arena that lends to an awesome atmosphere.

There might be a couple changes next year but we'll not let the cat out of the bag until then.

Those numbers are not correct, there's no way Piketon holds more.
Waverly does not give $100.00 to the winning team. That is something new this year given in addition to the Rotary Cup trophy by the Rotary Club.

All this talk about rotating sites and money and so on is unwarranted. This is a Waverly Holiday Classic tournament HOSTED by Waverly, period. It has not always included all 4 county schools. Even if it continues to be the 4 county schools for years to come there is no need to rotate sites as Hawhees Palace is by far the better facility and is a Waverly ran tournament.
Besides, Piketon wants to play there so they get two games in the facility they will be playing their sectionals in.
Huntington plays Waverly every year and guess where they play? At Waverly. They do not play at Huntington every other year because coach Uhrig wants to get a game in at his sectional tournament site. Pretty smart, huh.

The Rotary Club donated $100.00 to Piketon last year, this is the second year.

I guess the Rotary Cup trophy is new this year. I didn't know they contributed $100.00 last year.

Wow, what an interesting twist this thread has taken! lol

Great game, many mistakes by both teams. Waverly made several which kept Piketon around, and Piketon made several which cost them a chance at the win. As for the gym size, Waverly is bigger, not by much but it does seat more. Piketons court is not as long, and if you dont believe me, the volleyball line at Waverly cuts through almost at the foul line, where as at Piketon 3 or so feet towards the middle of the paint. This means the bleachers arent as long at Piketon. The home side at Piketon has more rows than Waverlys, but the visitors side has maybe seven, and Waverlys visitors has probably 10 or 11. The mezzanine sections are similar in size, but the home side on Piketons doesnt go the whole length of the court, and the visitors side upper deck is similar to Waverlys, so all in all Waverlys probably holds mid 2000's, Piketon, low 2000's.

As for the parking, Piketon might have more lots, with more spaces, however there is no street parking so that would factor in. The concession area in Piketon the small hallway would cause problems, but the cafetorium area could be utulized for better concession areas. What does all of this mean, nothing! lol

guys laugh at me if you want but i have the original 1st program and newspaper clippings from 1973, which states a crowd of over 2800 near 3000 at the 1st game against wellston, and in the program it says 3200 capacity, also when i went to school there there use to be a sign that said 3200 capacity i am just staing the facts boys. it is the best gym in southern ohio especially for a 37 yr old gym. by the way i am always sober and have never drank.

As a ref, Waverly is a great place to work a game. Have plenty of room on the floor and the hospitality is second to none.

Fred, if the building capacity is 3200, do you think that means 3200 seats? What about the lobby, locker rooms, gym floor, classrooms? That was a fire code capacity rating, not a seating capacity.

All great discussion points but the tourney is no going anywhere.
I would rather see Piketon Host a shoot out simular to Ironton at the beginning of the year.

Yes, everyone please take the class & come help out. I have nearly 50 nights scheduled this season...There are plenty of available games to be picked up.
Get on the court, 5 to 10 feet from 10 running, diving, scrambling, jumping players who are hustling non stop & in continous motion & have over 1,000 other officials screaming in your ear & two very aggressive coaches in your ear for a straight hr & a half, then let us know just how easy it is to "be consistent" or to never miss a call. Then go set in the stands & see the difference & you will understand just how difficult it is to call one game of basketball.
And I am not complaining one bit. I love every minute of being out there calling these games. I am just pointing out that it is 100 times easier to call a game from the stands than what it is right down by the action.....

And no, I am not thick or thin skinned...I am seriously pointing out as stated before our district really does need officials. Get your license & come help out. You will see just how easy it is & you will see that a referee does not determine the outcome of any ballgame.

Good luck! PM me once you decide to get your license & I can direct you to the persons giving th classes.

I won't get on the refs too much. But it was harder than I even imagined when I finally got to ref a few games when I was in college. Through a class we got what the college called 1-game certficates, (IDK what they were) so we could go officiate mostly jr. high games and calls will be missed so the blown calls in games are not what I get so fired up but when the wrong call is made is when I think "I would have called that differntly"
But I agree with sparky
Get your sneakers and whistles out its harder than it looks. I've been on both sides of the sidelines.

big j i am just stating that at 1 of the gym doors it used to say capacity 3200 and i know that when waverly played gallipolis back in 73 for the title it said in the paper that there were 3000 plus fans in attendance, plus in another article they had a picture of the gym and coach hawhee and it said the gym seats 3000 so i am assuming that standing room would be the other 200. no big deal but for a 37 yr old gym they did it right. the only thing they messed up on was the amount of lockerroom facililities, they made 2 and should have made 4. in saying this it doesn't mean that the other schools dont have nice gyms bc they do !!!!! i am just saying that for a 37 yr old gym it is 1 of the finest gyms in southern southeastern ohio. believe it or not i was at several of the big games in 73-74 and on and it was even more crowded than the other night when waverly played piketon.

"A player shall not while a try or tap is in flight or is touching the backboard or is in the basket or in the cylinder above the basket, intentionally slap or strike the backboard or cause the ring to vibrate". - Player Technical

Roback played a heck of a game. He had a ton of rebounds and altered numerous shots. Kevin Malone is getting better every game and playing with confidence. He hit some key shots. Kelley gets a lot of credit for stepping up and hitting two critical foul shots with seconds remaining in the game.

James Lewis continues to amaze. He is not only quick and fast he's quit a talent. I believe he made the all tournament team. Legg is exceptional as well. Piketon will be fine and will continue to improve. Pike County would love to see another SVC Championship and tournament run!

Slapping/contacting the backboard is not always a technical foul. The actual rule allows for judgement based on intent. The purpose of the Rule 10-3-6 is penalize intentional contact. If a player attempts to block a shot but instead slaps the backboard and the ball goes into the basket, the basket counts and play goes on. It the contact is part of the block attempt and does not cause the board to vibrate or the contact does not give the player an advantage play goes on. These situations are covered in the Case Book section that applies to Rule 10.

John, the lobby has nothing to do with the seating capacity- whats next the restrooms and the old classrooms? I have no idea what the building capacity is at Waverly but I do know what the seating capacity is, and Fredy, you are correct about the seating capacity- there was a big story in the newspaper years ago about having the boys single A district at Chillicothe (seating a max of 2,400)instead of Waverly (seating of 3,125) because the seating at Waverly was much better and no poles blocking the view. The article was in the Feb. 17, 1987 News-watchman- information provided by several sources including the southeast district director at the time Dan Brisker.

As far as playing the tourney in the new gym on the hill- it will never happen- as far as playing in Piketon- they would have to start thier own tourny without Waverly. The original Waverly holiday classic had Waverly, Southeastern, Peebles, and Eastern in it anyway. At one time there was talk about making it a route 23 tourney with Waverly, Chillicothe, Portsmouth, and Circleville.

In my opinion Waverly should never change anything because I can't imagine having four teams that would draw better than the ones we have now.
