8th Girls Jackson over Chillicothe 80 to 3...... why?

Post by sprinter14 »

Last night, the Chillicothe Girls Junior High teams traveled to Jackson to play basketball. The 8th Grade Jackson Lady Ironmen won the lopsided affair by a final score of 80 to 3. Congratulations on a very good fundamental basketball team!! However, I am going to question the means by which the score was run to 80 points.

First I have to give the background. These girls played Jackson twice last year as 7th graders and already played once this season. All 3 previous games had resulted in similar blowout scores in favor of Jackson. So coming into this game, the Jackson coach had to know she was favored by 60 plus.

We had only 8 players last night for the Lady Cavs. Four of whom had violated team policy and would be benched for the first quarter. I applaud our coach for starting 4 players against Jackson’s 5. Our coach told the Jackson coach what his plan was and her reply was that she would not press while we had four on the court.

Jackson’s first 2 points were on the board literally 5 seconds into the game. Less than 4 minutes in, the score was already 15 to 0. As soon as our fifth player checked into the game, the Jackson coach immediately turned on the full court press with a lead somewhere near 20 to 0.

With 17 seconds remaining in the half, and the score 36 to 0 in favor of Jackson, the coach told her players to “look at the clock” to make sure they hit that last 3 pointer to go up 39 to 0 at the half.

Throughout the second half, the impressive Lady Ironmen continued to roll up the points. Stealing the ball at will from out inept ball handlers and driving the length of the court for layups. Stopping only occasionally to nail the 3 pointers that helped increase the lead even faster.

Finally……..mercifully, with 1:11 to play in the game, the Jackson coach told her players to “slow it down”. And the girls quit driving in the layups and began holding the ball to run the clock out. I guess since the 100 mark was out of reach, it wasn’t worth trying anymore.

Final score 80 to 3

Now, here’s my points

First in Jackson’s defense:

1) She only had 7 players and she did a good job of playing all seven. She didn’t have a lot of inexperienced kids to sub in.

2) She shouldn’t have started 4 just because we did (and she didn‘t). Our kids were the ones in trouble, not hers.

3) I agree, you never tell your kids NOT to play hard

4) Jackson’s coach also looks to be 20 years old or younger, so maybe she hasn’t learned etiquette yet.

But here is my beef with this………..there is STILL a thing known as ETIQUETTE in sports.

This was clearly a case of the famous quote, “name your score”. And the Lady Ironmen coach named her score to the tune of 80 to 3. I honestly believe she would have been content with 100 to 0.

My take on it………please correct me if I’m wrong, but I have coached before and this is what I would have done: Jackson’s coach should have:

1) Never pressed in a game when you are favored by 60

2) Maybe pull a player and played 4 on 4 once you are up 15 only four minutes into the game.

3) Pull your defense back into a zone to allow the opposing team to attempt to run something that resembles an offense.

4) Ask your girls to quit driving the ball the length of the court for uncontested layups and instead setting up and running plays. Work on offensive strategies with 5 passes before any shot.

5) and no 3 pointers!! I would have told the girls after 5 passes, somebody take a sensible 2 pointer.

Now, this is not asking the girls to NOT play hard. This is just changing the strategy of the game to name your score a little differently. More to the tune of 65 to 15 or something of the nature.

Now, is Jackson’s coach or the fans PROUD of winning 80 to 3 instead of something closer to 65 to 15??

Show me anyone who would rather win 80 - 3 and I will show you one sad, sad, sad individual.

One last thing:

Thank you to the referees, games like that are the hardest to call and they gave us some favorable calls.

Also, thank you to the Jackson fans who applauded when our girl hit our only field goal of the night!!

And to the Jackson fan who hollered to the girls to “keep playin hard and work on your game” and cheered SOO loudly when the girls were scoring into the 70’s……..well, I can’t say to you what I’d like to on this board……….

What is wrong with these coaches?I saw a score of 90-17 on the forum yesterday. The coaches need to be fired if they have no more sense than this! The coach from Texas last year should be a reminder to these coaches,I think he won 100-0 and was promptly fired the next day or day after!

looks like you have put a lot of time into this were you at game?

you apparently have never coached or was in that position. if the jackson coach coached last night like she usually does she :122248 did all she could to keep the score down.

lets look at a couple of situations if Chillicothes coach played with only 4 players it probably could have been 125 to nothing. And how do you tell a player to not play.....

i would have imagined that the jackson team ran some plays to keep the score down.

As far as their fans. I have only respect for them. I have been to some of their games and saw them play for years. their fans have traveled extensivly and put in a great deal of time and money. in my eyes i think they should get excited and cheer for their team.

Jackson players continue to play hard and fans cheer hard.

balln777, are you serious????????????????????????????

Are you REALLY asking me if I were at the game?????????????

When obviously YOU WERE NOT!!!!

Yes, I was there. I have it on DVD. Want a copy to see the truth?? Free of charge.

You even said........and I quote: " If she coached like she usually does" and "I would imagine that"

Obviously you were NOT there. I was.

Total lack of class from a coaching standpoint.

The fans should be proud of their team, BUT NOT PROUD OF THE FINAL SCORE!

I am with balln777 on this one. You have know idea who the coach is or what type of coach or for that matter what kind of person she is.

If you say that she only had 7 players and was playing all 7 then there wasn't much else you could do. I think that it is a sad day when we start telling our players to stop working hard and let up on a team.

All week in practice you teach them to work hard and go hard the whole time so that in the games they will be ready to give 110%. What kind of coach would she be if she taught that in practice and then said OK just give me 65% in this 3rd quarter and dial it down to 40% in the 4th.

I would have a different take on this if there were 12 players on the bench and 5 of them did not get to play much or she was pressing the whole game. All of the situations you said like the look at the clock to get a shot, sounds like she was just teaching game situations. Congrats to her for using a coaching moment and not taking a night off like you wanted her and her team to do.

I would have pressed when you only had 4 players in the game.

I have been on both sides of these types of games over the past year.....I applaud Chillicothe's coaching staff for the way they handle these types of situations. IMO, they are never fun for either side (if the coaches are trying to handle the situation properly)

We (North Adams) played Chillicothe on Tuesday night...They have an excellent 7th grade team that is going to make a lot of coaches regret running up the score on previous teams. Their 7th grade team is a much more talented team than our 7th grade team, yet Coach Dawes did not find it necessary to "run up" the score on our group. Once they got a large lead, he backed off the press and had his girls work on their half-court defense. Each girl on his team got a lot of playing time throughout...I appreciate the style of game Coach Dawes played during this game.

Their 8th grade group continues to improve... I thought many of the girls played with their best effort and from the actions of some, they got the punishment that they deserved.
Chillicothe has an excellent coaching staff that is committed to making these girls the best that they can be as they head to the high school level.

I wish the Chillicothe junior girls program the best of luck!!!

I think at some point it has to register that you are in total control.I think you can still have your kids play as hard as they can,but at that time you can work on your half court sets and slow the game down by walking the ball up the floor and have your team make several passes before the ball can be shot. There are avenues to take to keep a game from getting this far out of hand.Keep in mind that these are young kids(12-13),sometimes adults forget about the kids on the opposing team.

I KNOW WHAT TO DO LETS HAVE THE GIRLS STEP OVER THE HALF COURT LINE AND STAND AND DRIBBLE THE BALL FOR 24 MINUTES.

FORGET ABOUT THE 80 POINTS. WHO CARES

WHAT ABOUT THE DEFENSE??? 3 POINTS

WHAT DO YOU DO THERE TELL THE GIRLS TO LET THE OTHER TEAM SHOOT AND NOT GUARD THEM COME ON.

So MightyOaks, you would have been a coach who named his score at 100 to 0?? or worse??

Like I said, the Jackson coach was in a situation where she had control over how bad the score got.

And you are forgetting that I said very plainly in the original post that you should never tell the girls NOT to play hard. But there are coaching strategies to SLOW DOWN the scoring.

Mission, apparently you and I are the only ones who know what we mean by slowing it down, lol.

This is a rough situtaion as a coach you have to have some sports etiquette. I have coached against teams where we could have put up 80 pts, but didn't. I used those games to start certain kids who wouldnt get a chance to start. Work on new defenses that maybe we need to work on. If I had a girl I wanted to work on her ball handling, those are those types of games. Don't think the individual gets upset if they see the coach obviously trying to keep the score down, you cant stop kids from scoring or playing defense.

I would have started the other two off the bench, stayed in zone all game and worked on different zone techniques, and anything else i could have done from embarassing the other team and coach. Trust me, I have been in the that situation and could have really embarassed some teams at the 6th grade level and 7th but chose the highger road.
Also remember you may have to apply for a job in that district or work for those parents or administrators, and trust me a good coach takes no pleasure in those types of games.

When I played in 7th grade we won 78-6 and played more than 20 players (yes we did).

Coach Ramey is a great young coach who was coached by a great coach and she was a great team player. Jackson is very happy to have her and hope she stays around for a long time.

She didn't press and only had 7 players.......and the bottom 5 players of that 7 would make a very, very good 8th grade team.

If this is the same Coach Ramey that I'm thinking of then there's no way this move was done intentionally. I'm sure she is proud of her team's effort but at the same time felt awful for the opponent. Blowouts happen and if she did in fact play all her girls (probably did) and didn't press (probably didn't) then there's not much else she could do. You don't try to teach a team a killer instinct and get in a game and tell them to let off. Sure, you can slow it down and work the ball around for good shots but you can't expect them to quit playing. I'd guess if there was a hole on her sideline she would've liked to have jumped in it because, as a coach, you never want to humiliate a team like this, but what are you to do?

Press yes she did!Feeling awful for her opponent,no she didn't!I don't care how you try to justify 80-3, you can't do it.humility comes into question, and I would like to be the coach on the other end that teaches this to her,but I have alot more class than this coach does. There are more lessons to be learned at this level then winning by 77 points!Hey coach I hope you feel like a winner,b/c the girls on the other end of this don't!YOU HAVE TO BE THE GREATEST COACH THAT THE STATE OF OHIO HAS EVER SEEN! keep up the good work :oop

APPARENTLY YOU DON'T KNOW THE COACH OR MAYBE YOU DO THE WAY YOU WANT TO SLAM HER.

I SAW THE VIDEO OF THE GAME AND YES THIS TEAM BACKED WAY OFF.

DID YOU SEE THE GAME? OR DO YOU JUST WANT TO SLAMP THE COACH LIKE YOU DID THE EASTERN COACH?

GET A LIFE.

AND BY THE WAY DO YOU PENTALIZE A TEAM FOR BEING GOOD? THE CLOCK RAN ALMOST THE LAST QUARTER.

I DON'T THINK YOU CAN COACH GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT THIS TEAM.....

I hope you don't take my post as a personal attack, cause it wasn't...I know it is hard to stop kids from scoring, especially when you coach them to score as much as possible..that is why I said it was hard, one of my teams beat a team in 6th grade, we scored 88 pts, the other team was throwing th ball to the kids, and I was telling them to slow it down, but the kids get excited..but at the same time, 80-3? that is crazy, but look at the eastern vs trimble game...it also shows some areas have better programs at the lower levels also, where some areas either don't have a program or lack of good coaching, but Jackson is good, they have alot of players that play AAU and it shows...
