You are right oaksbacker1 . . . have Coach Phillips fired for missing those kicks, giving up those 2 TD passes, and a couple of stupid penalties. I saw him on the field . . . doing all of that. You are the example I used in an earlier post when I said "fans" and used that word with caution. Not ALL coaches win with talent, some lose with it. However . . . NOBODY and I mean NOBODY wins without it. goldenboy is right, your Oaks were 0-10 the year before he arrived and a total laughing stock. Bet you weren't a "fan" then. Your program has improved every year since he got there. Thing is, he will tell anyone it is his players and staff that got them there. Your basketball coach won/wins with talent. You think Coach Persin is going to stay when that talent graduates . . . forget it!

Sider I will have to disagree with you on the part about letting Mantell go. He wasn't a very good coach. He didn't use his players like he should have!

Good points Siderfan , The Oaks had a bad season ,but before that they were competitive . I remember when Tripplet was there and Lucas came to Wellston the Oaks upset Wellston when wellston had a good team with Brad Young ,Thomas Mayes and Lance Phillips among others. Wellston went 6-4 that year . I agree a new coach + talent doesnt always = wins. I also Agree Mantell should have been given another year.

Not sounding like I am hating on Mantell becasue I'm not he is one the nicest coaches around and will do anything for his players, but why should have he been brought back? He only won 7 games in 3 yrs.

First year Mantell was left a team that started 8 soph and only had 2 returning starters. Year two there was inprovement with the team 4 games won. Third year was a big dissapointment to Mantell himself let alone anyone else. To recap the year . The last scrimmage the Rockets lose their best player for 6 weeks. Week one lost to Jackson in a close hard fought game. Week two Lost another Hard fought game to a very good Minford team not to mention the fact Wellston played this game with bothe starting runningbacks out . Week three lost to Waverly . Week four Lost to Nelsonville in a game in which the season was lost. The game 15 - 6 @ half and the second half was a nightmare it was like year one all over again but the kids were not sophs they were seniors. All this without their best player.
This is all just my opinion , but you ask and these are my reasons. Besides I knew what the plans and or changes that Mantell intended for the upcomming season . Which i will not go into because it no longer matters.
I will take this time to wish Jason Mantell good luck and God bless for he and his family in the future.

Bigmamma I know all about the "Parents" . Everyone thinks their little Johnny is better than what he actually is. I am just giving my opinion on Mantell . If you look at the senior class last year (2009) dateing back through Jr high up through Varsity they as a group never had a winning season.
Ive already stated I think Phillips will take the Wellston Job.

boiler, the senoirs of this years wellston team actually did win their freshmen yr. they lost to jackson, piketon, and gallia acedmy. they won 5 games that season and they were coached by someone who knew how to use his players and get the best out of them hinton and freshmen coach chris hutch something mantell never figured out at wellston thats why they didn't win.

Newbie here, my brother seems to be on here all the time. Anyway, what do some others from Wellston think? Boilermaker, you seem awlful sure Coach Phillips will go to Wellston. Has he even been contacted? Has anyone heard this from him? Seems like a lot of speculation for a coach that just went 11-1 and has the majority of his team coming back. Sometimes the timing for such things is just not right. That seems to be the case here.

Goldenboy ,guess who was the freshman and Jv coach that year? Also they Lost to Nelsonville too and went 4-4 only playing 8 games .

Boss429 , I have been told this by people who would know of his intrest , friends and board members and such. I havnt talked to him myself though. I will be surprised if he dont get the things he want and is not the next coach at Wellston .

Boiler, actually they beat nelsonville there freshmen yr. in 06 i was part of that team. We trottled them led by Ryan Darnell at QB, and Cody Wilkett at RB. The Coaches were Head Coach-Heath Hinton, Ass. Brian Mantell, Chris Hutch also Freshmen coach, Joe Briggs, and Coach Shepard who now coaches at Logan Elm, and Don Thompson!

The same coaches that were coaching last season except Hinton of course and Shep. Don Thompson was a jr high coach. You are wrong about Hinton ,,he may have been at the games but he delegated the Freshman and JV Head coaching positions to Brian Mantell when he was at Wellston .The same Brian Mantell who was on staff last year. As i said before this group struggled all through school to win for what ever reason .

Boiler, you've clearly missed the point here. Mantell didn't not play the players in the right position, Hinton did. Their Freshmen year they won, yeah Hinton wasn't the head coach but he put the players in there positions that was best for the team, and the assitant coach's did what Hinton told them to do.

I wasnt arguing any point. Heath Hinton did a great job ,nobody can argue that.I just said this group of seniors had trouble at every level in football ,but baseball is a different story.
