good gathering at the scrimmage. The offense seemed ahead of the defense, usually other way around. The thing that I noticed was pass defense, as usual not near up to par, but thats the way it is at the burg most years.

The Burg looked tough up front on both sides of the ball and their tailback is explosive. Good size and strength for the Pirates. Piketons passing games looked good for the first scrimmage, need to toughen up the middle a little on D, but the O line looked like they were making strides as the game went on. As for Burgs lack of pass D, a little bit of early in the season, and Piketons passing game being sharp. Good luck to the Burg.

Burg kept every pass in front of them. One nice 60 yard pass got past one of Burg's corners setting up for a td. I think the corner in there at the time is not a starter but Piketon did get a receiver behind one of the starters that was dropped.

Piketon's goods - QB has a nice arm and appears to be accurate. Line was decent especially on pass blocking.

Piketon's bads - Run D was not good and Linebackers seemed to bail out quite abit.

Burg's goods - Running game and O line. I think the smallest gain on the ground was about four yds, They looked good. Burg's qb is going to be very good.

Burg's Bads - weakside corner, Receivers not running sharp routes

Scrimmage was based on 10 play and five play series so it really didn't give an accurate game like look. Total varsity scores 2-1 Burg

JV 1-1

Burg's corners were less than impressive.
Don't adjust and team will exploit that all season!

Did someone take the wheaties away from these kids?
They are small! God help them next season!

The Burg has never had a good pass defense.

each year they have dismal corner coverage. has to be a coaching issue. it is the same each year with different players. hard to exploit in the soc. not may teams can throw with any consistancy.

How many teams will the Burg face throughout the season that throw enough to exploit a soft coverage on defense. They kept most of Piketon passes in front of them, can only think of 3 where Piketon receivers got behind the defense and 1 of those led to a score. Ironton, West, Minford all three wont kill you with the pass. Piketon has a QB that has been waiting awhile to play and he is a good throwing QB, he completed probably 14 passes to 6 different receivers. The Streaks will throw some this year, but like most high school teams, will not rely on it! I dont know about being small, Wheelersburg seems to reload with those 6'1" 180 lb kids year in and year out.

Portsmouth throws the ball quite a bit and so does Oak Hill. Not many SOC II teams put the ball up a lot other than Waverly.

Burg needs to stop the run. Make em throw. Oak hill will be a test, but u have to win the Itown game first. Concentrate on that option!

Ahh!! Ahh!! Your good! But not that good.
1 outta 2! Ain't saying which one though!
Your mad cause I'm right!
Ask the same former Burg players that I talked to that game and see what they say!
THE EXACT SAME THING!!!

So what does the 2 questions even have to do with me posting that?
Burg is exploited even worse than normal this season on the corners. So bad that even the SOC II teams throw against them.

Do you happen to recall the playoff game with Springfield Catholic where they ran the same pass pattern all night long be sending the unning back in motion and then hitting him with a 5 to 7 yard pass which would then turn into a 10 to 15 yard gain and there was never an adjustment made? This was during Larry Halls tenure, so I stand by statement that the Burgs pass defense has always been a little lax. Burg should have never lost that game and if that pass play had been negated they wouldn't have.

It use to be embarrassing to even watch them play other SOC schools. 50-0 at the half during the 90's. I don't think the burg was so dominating in talent as much as the other schools were that bad in developing theirs. Now, every game is competitive except NW so far.
It's all about the feeder system and keeping the talent home.
Everyone has caught up to the burg?!?!?!?!?! Valley hasn't beaten them in 45+ years. But they havent played them each year for 45 years, but thats how long its actually been.
I got this info when i was doin a weekly article on burgfan.com it came from seops user jesco white. It's valley's only two wins against burg. I have more if you want to see them just pm me

1962: (September 7th at Wheelersburg) Valley 27 - Burg 12

1964: (September 25th at Valley) Valley 32 - Burg 0

we are---- in this area---- div. 4 and div. 5. you do the best with what u got. and wheelersburg has done an above average job of defending the pass. @ waverly walls jr. year we were bad. @ home against waverly walls sr. year we were great.

watched the scrimmage also and thought our O-LINE was really good. i was impressed with all of our other backs getting the ball and running hard. all i have heard is stop shank and u will win. Not So Fast My Friend. shears, graf, workman, hood, luster, obrien, parsley, stegman, and hall show a lot of promise. defense needs to get comfortable with all the new players/positions and learn how to work with each other.

Yeah i think this be a good season for the Burg. But not GREAT! It will probably be a playoff season that again will end in a 2 game in playoff loss. Maybe losing the 1st game. But don't count on that SOC II title. They'll be in the hunt, but Minford or West will probably take it this season.

If you boys are as good as I hear.
I actually am anxious to see yo play.
I hear Bigger, Better, Faster. Than last season.

So if thats the case, I wanna see it. I wanna see a team that I can say, Man I seen them play and they are just great!
Regardless if Burg loses. If a team is good, I enjoy watching the skill that team brings to the table.

But I will still root for the Burg.

Ironton 24 (No Extra Points) Ironton's kicking game is always bad.
Burg 14
