Thrown out of a game.

Post by DASANI »

I was thrown out of a J.H. basketball game last week for saying "they're pitching a tent in the paint ref". I bit crazy if you ask me. But please share your stories if you've ever been thrown out of a game please. Id love to hear em.

That sounds like a J H ref trying to be a big shot. I have never been thrown out (probably should have a few times) but I know if you get tossed out at Manchester, it's a trip to the jail for disorderly conduct and a $100+ fine. :122246

they should hand out whistles to all the fans and let them call the game from the stands. games lasting over two hours would calm everyone down. interesting about manchester. better be sure about who get thrown out. however, if refs cleared the gym a few times of all fans things would settle down. jh games are the worst.

A lot of refs do not like to be shown up.

Some refs suck. Especially at the JH level. They are just starting out and progress up with the kids. I have watched the same refs for the past 10 years move up as my kids do, and they both have gotten better with experience.

With that said, I would never do that job. You have to have pretty tough skin, and it sounds like the guy mentioned may not be cut out for it. I think as long as the fans don't say anything personal about the refs, they should just ignore it. More and more I see refs turning and yelling at the fans. Last year at the end of a game I saw a ref come back out on the floor after a game and challenge the fans to come down and fight him. Several were on the way when the other refs and the AD pulled him into the locker area.

When I was a ref I never payed attention to what a fan said. As long as they didn't cuss or threaten me I could of cared less what they said. Another thing is there are certain refs that hold grudges. I have had my problems with a couple of jerks who every game they officiate that my son plays in the first thing they do when they walk out on the court is look in the stands for me.

LMAO. Theres usually 5 or so ejections during the JH tourney at webster. it gets heated when little Jimmy Junior gets fouled hard and it doesn't get called and his daddy gets into it. I remember when NW played at sw and the boy jumped the bench into the stands and they stopped the game. Now I know who and what they said that made him jump over the seats but I won't say that here. thats why they switched the benches around.. A NW fan got up and gave the bird to websters whole side shortly before that. It's always entertaining when someone gets thrown out.

The best think that happened to me and how I acted at basketball games was when my son was a freshmen he taped the games for the coach and then when we got home I copied them to VHS-guess that tells you how long ago that was. I would watch the games as they were copied. After watching the games I had a feeling that I needed to call some officials and apologize for saying what I did at the game.

As for 3 seconds-not sure they call it much any more. I know a guy that was an official at one time and the first thing he would call every game was three seconds-he said that was to clear out the lane because that was where most problems in a game started and once that was established the game would clean up fairly well. I would say that the people that know the guy know who the one time official is.

I've seen alot of refs hold grudges and thats not right to other fans ,the team or coaches.
they should not get run over but let the game be played fairly.

I was tossed from a Volleyball game about 3yrs ago, for a misconception of me yelling to one of the girls on the court. Funny part was I knew the Sheriff who had to come escort me, quite well. So, we kind've just mosied outside, holding back our laughs. =D

Not sure who the guy was, but a Nelsonville York fan was arrested during the VC/NY JV game a couple weeks ago. He was screaming at the ref and was told to leave. On the way down the steps he threw a pop bottle onto the floor at the ref. Some ejections are very entertaining but that was just rediculous.

Haven't been tossed from a game since me and some of my cohorts were tossed out while in the student section many years ago, it was because the ref thought we said something that we didn't say. I will say we were very load, and came as close as we could to the court without getting in trouble. I remember a few times an opposing player making crude gestures, and saying foul words to us. This usually resulted in a foul for that team, so I can handle the toss from one game.
No problems since I have been out of high school, I guess I have mellowed in my old age

As a ref for a number of years we normally try to ignore fans, which works with a big crowd cause we normally don't even hear what is said. Its when the crowd is smaller that you can't help but hear. No referee likes to be shown up. As far as holding grudges the guys I normally work with don't hold grudges, it a heat of the battle type of thing and when its over its over. A very few times if a fan is really vocal game administration might tell us it wouldn't hurt their feelings if so and so got ejected. Sometimes we have had a bad day and a fans comments might be the "the straw..." As far as the 3 sec. call, as referees we really take a lot of heat because (1) there are a number of things, by rule, that actually stop the count, which the average fan might not know. An example would be a kid in the paint for 2 seconds receives the ball, at the moment he starts a move to the basket the 3 sec. count is supsended. (2) We are asked to enforce the intent of the rule. The 3 sec. rule is one of advantage/disadvantage, so if a kid is at the foul line with one foot in but never sees the ball 3 sec is probably not going to be called. In closing the guys I work with referee because of a "love of the game". Keep yelling for your team and disagreeing with our calls, but remember we are human too.

By the way its not just Manchester, in Adams County if you are removed from the game it is an automatic Disorderly Conduct which carries a fine. We have one guy whom we tease and say that the Court house in West Union sends him a Christmas card every year
