Re: Thrown out of a game.
Been a good while, thought this was an interesting topic.
Anyone have any experiences from this season to report?
This now being my 4th year of officiating & 1st season of calling varsity games I have yet to eject a fan....Called 20 nights so far this season & so far only one run in with a fan & it was no big deal...Actually spoke to him during a time out & it was all pretty decent after that...

Re: Thrown out of a game.
I have noticed an increasing trend of officials cracking down on fan yelling and complaints. Years ago I could go to a game and hear numerous fans yelling at officials about a call, and nothing was said or done. Today, if you look at an official the wrong way you might get tossed. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? IMO as long as you are not saying anything vulgar or inappropriate or doing anything inappropriate, there is no reason an official should say a word to you at all. But when it comes to complaining about a bad call, that is your right as a fan to do so.

I thought I remembered reading about that being either an Adams Co or maybe an SHL rule. Is it working? Maybe others should try it if so.blockcharge wrote:By the way its not just Manchester, in Adams County if you are removed from the game it is an automatic Disorderly Conduct which carries a fine. Re: Thrown out of a game.
A friend of mine got tossed for asking a ref if he paid is FIREMAN union dues cause we're getting hosed. The best I heard was you should give yourself a "T" for impersonating a referee. That ref didn't like that at all. Oh well.
Re: Thrown out of a game.
My favorite was an extremly loud yelling man waited for a near packed house to get quiet did his hilarious screaming.....appropriately got tossed....ran down the stairs like he was the gold medalist in the downhill stair competition and yelled....I"M LEAVING...but you still SUCK....it was great. lol
We also hada high society person in the crowd about 6 rows up from the court and the nearly bald ref missed a call pretty badly and out of nowhere the guy yelled "get your hair out of your eyes...you missed that one" the nearly bald ref couldn't help but laugh...as did everyone around.
I'm worried sparky still doesn't understand the out of bounds line rule.

Re: Thrown out of a game.
A couple years ago I was at a sectional game with a couple local schools playing. One of the refs was a guy that worked at the same place i did.Right before the half that ref made a couple calls that were questionable, then he blew the next call bad. I yelled dont make it so obvious next time ref and his head whips around and he stared at me. He looked me up at work about a week later and told me you dont know how close u come to being thrown out of that game. The ironic thing is the whole place erupted wth his call and i couldnt even here myself yell .so i ask him what made him look straight at me and he said I saw you sitting there and I knew when i made that call you would call me out on it.LOL

Re: Thrown out of a game.
I agree 100% it should be up to the school not the refs. I have never been thrown out of a game but i was involved in a ordeal outside of wheelersburg high school after a burg - valley game, it started a month before at the burg - valley game at valley. I'm not sayin what year it was but it did involve the cops. Anyone from either school should know what i'm talkin about.ClevelandBrowns#1 wrote:It shouldn't be up to the ref's to have someone escorted out of the gym. Clay used to have a parent who's voice really carried. He got ejected from a few jr high games, so they put him in charge of the scoreboard. His son got grabbed by the head and thrown to the floor in a flagrant foul, that wasn't called, and of course, he got tossed and we had to find someone to run the scoreboard.

As a Ref the best I ever heard, (it didn't happen to me) "Coach- Sir can you call a Technical on me for what I think. Ref- of course not. Coach then i think you are an SOB.
From the dark side (refs), (again didn't happen to me) Coach runs onto the floor to protest a call, ref just stands there, Coach say "well i guess you are going to call a T for coming onto the floor. Ref- No sir, I'm going to call a T for every step it takes you to get off the floor. Coach then calls out his 2 Assistants and they carry him off the floor. Ref says I lied and tosses the Coach.

Re: Thrown out of a game.
Best one I have had yet was a father of a jv girl 2 years ago. His daughters team was down around 30 in the 2nd quarter. As we are getting ready to inbound the ball on the side, he stands up next to me & ask me to please toss him so he does not have to watch this any longer & his daughter will not get upset for him leaving on his own...lol....
I did not toss him & his daughters team still lost the game but actually cut it to around a 10 point lead in the 2nd half.

Was anyone at the New Boston/Northwest girls game the other day. Heard the gym was cleared.
As for schools being responsible for the actions of spectators, I agree to a point. If I see something I will deal with it, but the refs ultimately have the say so.

Re: Thrown out of a game.
In between quarters of a game a female ref was standing by the stands. Guy holds out a cell phone to her and says " I think you lost your cell phone" ref looks up at him with a confused look on her face. Guy says again " I think you lost your cell phone". She says something to the effect that she didn't think she did. Guy replies "has to be yours it's got 16 missed calls on it". She took it like a champ and just laughed.

Re: Thrown out of a game.
Boomer, that's a great one. I used a time out in a game last winter to demonstrate a proper jump stop and pivot to a JV official. He tried to tell me that it was a travel (and that night apparently it was because he called it every single time it happened), I insisted that it wasn't, my buddy was coaching Tri-Valley's reserves against my boy's and is laughing his butt off, the official said "coach there is no such thing as a jump stop, it's called a pro-hop and it is legal because you jump again after you land, if you stay on the floor and try to pivot it is a travel." He nearly left me speechless, I did manage to laugh and say "you must be right, that's probably why you have been a JV official for ten years." Needless to say he wasn't impressed and I finished the game in my seat.
I also had a book keeper for a junior high game I was coaching several years back get tossed for throwing the book across the floor when he felt his son was being roughed up on consecutive possessions. There were a couple bad parts to this story, one was the fact that it was a tied game with 20 seconds to play and they assessed a technical foul to our bench because he was our book. Oh yeah, he was also the speaker of the state house of representatives at that time.

The official who tossed him certainly had a good story to tell. Not many can claim to have tossed a sitting state speaker of the house out of a basketball game.newlex/sheridan wrote:Boomer, that's a great one. Re: Thrown out of a game.
i had completely forgotten about this topic. i only skimmed the last two pages so this may have already been told.
a coach asked a ref if he could get t'd up for what he was thinking and the ref said no. the caoch said good because i think you suck. if i remember correctly the ref lied because he t'd him up.

Re: Thrown out of a game.
Why is it that you usually only see basketball officials throw fans out and not football officials? I know some will say due to proximity from where the fans sit, but some places in Southern Ohio, the fans are right on the field, Trimble, Green, South Gallia and East to name a few.
