American legion state baseball tournament
Re: American legion state baseball tournament
So can we expect high school basketball district and regional games are not much longer for this world being played at OU Convo?
Re: American legion state baseball tournament
I don't think the players stay in the dorms for district and regional games, therefore the cost isn't nearly expensive as it is for the state legion tournament...I'm willing to bet that Ohio University gets a pretty penny from the OHSAA for their use of the Convo during those few weeks.

I am sure OU makes a ton of money from the district and regional basketball tournaments, almost all of which is derived from the fans of SE Ohio. Nonetheless, they virtually ignore local students and athletes. They lost the single most profitable event in Athens and the surrounding area in the state legion tournament which estimates say bring in $400,000 and do not really appear to care.
On July 25 at 7:00 p.m., I understand that Dateline NBC is going to do a story on poverty in America and will focus on people struggling to make ends meet in the Athens area. Losing this tournament certainly did not help with that problem. Nor did it endear the University to the great veterans who so nobly served this nation. I am a fan of OU and feel that it in the past that they did some great things for this area. Unfortunately, I feel that they have now completely lost touch with the people of the area where their institution is located and that is very unfortunate. I hope that they right the ship soon.

BaseballStud,
The players are housed by the State at the state legion tournament. Ohio University was paid for twelve teams that stayed in the dorms and for the legion members who ran the tournament. They also paid the food facility for the 12 teams eating in the dining hall. As the teams went home after two losses, the cost of both the rooms and food went down. It is a substantial outlay of money. This year they are housing the teams in The Holiday Inn Express and the Hampton Inn in Lancaster and giving the players, coaches and tournament personnel a per diem to eat on. I only give these facts so that people have some idea the enormous cost of running the tournament. The state American Legion does a great job of hosting the tournament. Their greatest fear is rain on Monday and Tuesday. Sixteen of the twenty-three games will be played on those two days and half the teams will be going home at the end of play on Tuesday.

So I'm assuming it's much cheaper for the state legion board to put the teams up in a hotel rather than in the dorms? Probably much less of a headache, worrying about if they are going to have a field to play on if rain is in the forecast.

I DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA WHETHER IT'S CHEAPER OR NOT. EITHER WAY IT IS A CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE AND A GREAT LOSS OF REVENUE FOR ou.
