Wellston Job
Re: Wellston Job
Numbers . . . I am sure each has had his own reasons for leaving and I will bet it is a very tough place to coach. I think being a head coach in any sport is one of the toughest jobs there is right now, especially a high school football coach. I am not sure if this is his "dream job" or not. I am sure a lot of coaches, not all, would like to go back to their alma mater and coach. However, if you are not from a certain community many outsiders would wonder why. Jackson would not be a dream job for someone from Vinton County. Wellston would not be a dream job for someone from Athens. The opposites would be true also. Many of us on here are not from those communities so we wonder why someone would call it a "dream job". We agree . . . time will tell. We should know in a few weeks.
Re: Wellston Job
I was kinda wondering where our friend and Wellston man "Boilermaker" is at on this subject. If you're lurking around Boiler, what do you think about all of this? Would you like the idea of a Wellston guy getting a shot at this job? Obviously if a Wellston guy got this job he would stay a while, and that would improve your program from top to bottom. Anyway, just wanted to stir up some conversation on this subject.

I was wondering the same thing about 'ol Boiler. He's been pretty quiet. Usually he has some insight. Well. . . the application deadline is now up. Any new names floating around? Anyone know when interviews will begin?

Re: Wellston Job
They will interview more than one. This is not a done deal with Phillips. I think it will get done though.
HSFBFAN you may be right ,however more often than not Wellston will be supperior to the Oaks in Football and im sure Phillips wont forget. If indeed they can blow the Rockets out this year. Remeber Wellston has a very good group of skill players comming back this year .The line will be a work in progress though. It may be a better game than it looks right now on paper.

Re: Wellston Job
Well said Boilermaker, I think this job comes down to Phillips and Hutch (if he applied).
Re: Wellston Job
What are your thoughts on this Boiler? Do you think Wellston has put itself in a corner with Coach Phillips? What if he does interview but decides not to take the job? Do you like the idea of a Wellston alum getting this job. I would think it would be very good for the program. I will have to respectfully disagree goldenboy. Coach Hutchinson needs experience to run a football program.
Re: Wellston Job
Every coach has to start somewhere. Why not start where you graduated from, know all of the players, players respect him, and he has been in the program for most this decade except when playing college ball!

Re: Wellston Job
Why does the job come down to Phillips and Hutchinson? Do any of you know who else applied or are they the only two applicants? Or, do you have to live in Wellston or be an alum to be the head coach? There could be someone great who is not a resident nor alum whose name is in the hat. I don't know that to necessarily be true, but there are usually more than a couple applicants for a head coaching position. One of these two gentlemen may very well get the job, but I think we need to be patient to see who else may be in the running. I saw Wellston play a couple times last season and they had some pretty darn good coaches that sat in the bleachers just behind their bench. The supt and school board might want to track some of those folks down!!

Re: Wellston Job
i think this is phillips job and i told why in previous post.also with schedule change the oaks will lose more than one no matter whos the coach.and boiler what makes you think that wellston is "superior" to the oaks and turn around and say if they blow us out this year.that way you cant be wrong?yell one team will win and who else would know the weakness of a team than its ex-head coach.so i think wellston is favorite soon as phillips takes job

Re: Wellston Job
bigmomma I said most years ,(if you look at the past series between these two schools ) Wellston fields a better football team....Again MOst Years.
There are plenty of applicants ,last I was told was 20 . I agree ..BytheNumbers who is to say those are the only two applicants worthy to take the job. I just think from talking to people that they would like to hire Phillips because he is from Wellston. I think the reason is that want someone who will stay long term. However Wellston has not shown much patients in keeping a coach around and I personaly dont know why they think that Phillips will be a long term answer. I guess time will tell.Wellston averages a new coach every 3 years ,one reason there is no consistency in the program.IMO Coach Hutchinson is a good young coach and the kids respond to him well. If he is not given the job ( I dont know if he even applied) He should be added to the staff .If he wants to accept a position on the new staff .
I still say Phillips will be named head coach by the next school board meeting . This is just my opinion on what I think will be done . I have no inside info other than talk with people who usually know what is going on.

Re: Wellston Job
The next head coach of the Wellston football program will be the program's eighth in the past 20 seasons. None of the seven sucesssors has defeated Jackson.
Bill Fyffe, who took over halfway through the 1985 season and coached through the 1990 season, defeated Jackson in three of five meetings, including Wellston's last victory over Jackson in 1989.
And Boilermaker is 100-percent correct....Wellston has not shown much patience in keeping a head coach and staff around.

Re: Wellston Job
Let's be somewhat fair however for this decade. Blackstone was finish after the 99 season... Lucas and Hinton left. Mantell, to me, has shown he is not up to the challenge. Over his couple of years he's had the talent to field competitive teams and has put together subpar performances. One of his mistakes that I noticed he never truely fixed, and is the sign of poor coaching, is having a system not fit for the players. He had HIS system and it just doesn't work with the athletes he had, and he needed to modify it to work with the athletes and he never did. A coach at this level needs to be able to adapt to what his current players abilities are - and he didn't.
I think it's the right time for a coaching search and just from this decade Wellston has been forced to search for new coaches, not really impaitent. I think Hutch could be a very good coach down the line, but he was also on the staff of the person who was just canned, which is always worrisome a little bit. Phillips is a good coach and if Hutch stayed on I think he could learn from him and then take over the program in the near future. At the very least I think Phillips is the right man for the job currently, but we'll see how things shake down.

HSFBFAN.....The 2010 season will be the 20th season starting with the 1991 season.
Thus, it is coach number eight.

Re: Wellston Job
With the application deadline up this past friday, does anyone know if interviews will begin this week? Or, how many will be interviewed? I would think that with March right around the corner, you would want a coach to be able to come in and acquainted with the kids ASAP.
