Re: Wellston Job
Funny comment a few posts back "BytheNumbers" when you said Wellston has all kinds of coaching candidates in the stands!
Isn't that so true of all high schools. Boiler must be connected with the school or school board somehow to get all this info. Still saying Phillips won't take this job. However, if that is who the Wellston faithful think is best to lead their program, give it a shot. I watched Oak Hill play twice (Minford/Coal Grove) this year. Very nice football team. Well balanced, very physical, kids looked real good. You could tell they are in the weightroom. If Wellston is able to pull Phillips, and give him time, you might get a team that looks like that.

Re: Wellston Job
Boiler just tell them it was Ralph Whittington who told you! lol....But as of for the coaching pos. If Phillips did endeed apply higher him now if not, and Chris Hutchinson applied higher him. Both are worthy candidates!

Re: Wellston Job
It is all speculation on my part. I have talked to people who should know what is going on ,but what they tell me they would tell anyone who ask . I am not in the know. I think the ball is in Greg Phillips court. He wants it its his . If not I dont think Wellston has a backup plan . I think they are banking on Phillips taking the job.
Re: Wellston Job
I think Phillips is going to be the coach, heck he might as well he's always down at the goalline on the weekends! Come home coach!

Re: Wellston Job
goldenboy. . . Do you think Phillips is trying to recruit Scott Sturgill to coach with him at Wellston? I always heard scott was a heck of a player in his day. Maybe Phillips is trying to work out a deal for free wings and beer if he takes the job. Who knows?
On a serious note. . . I would say the new coach should be chosen in the next week or so. Maybe Boilermaker can give us the latest.

I agree with boiler the next board meeting should be it. And is it true that Mike Lackey Asst. Principal at Whs is going to be the new AD for 2010-2011?
Re: Wellston Job
Boilermaker, talked to a coach at Bw's in Chilli Friday night. He is getting an interview at Wellston. He told me interviews don't start until the end of next week. Going to interview 6, cut down to 3, and then offer the job. Not sure they will be able to hire March 11th. Can they call a special board meeting later in the month? At the very latest they can get one hired by the end of March. I would think Wellston is a tough place to coach. Maybe the hometown guy is the way to go. I think he would be crazy to go. Saw that Oak Hill team play a couple of times last year, nice team!

Re: Wellston Job
I was told they would interview 10 . Two are from out of state (Texas- Colorado) and name a coach after the March 11th meeting.
Re: Wellston Job
That would make more sense to hire later in the month. If they interview that many coaches, they are going to have to take time and evaluate a lot of material. The end of March is not too late to get this done. THE most important thing is to get it right. In my opinion, they are 1-2 in their last 3 hires. The coach before Heath Hinton was one and done. Regardless, that has to hurt a program. Hinton was good, but the last hire just couldn't seem to get things going. Wish your team luck and hope you get the right guy. As I posted previously, I think Phillips is crazy if he takes this job. I do think he would do a great job for you guys.
Re: Wellston Job
Come on people, can you say peewee football? Get your coach from the peewee league. If not, then get a used car salesman. That is the new fad. Other TVC teams are doing it. Now Marietta is talking about doing it. Get you a peewee coach that has talked a few times to a good high school coach and you will win.

Actually Wellston's Pee wee coach is a good coach. He has been very successfull . I know there is a huge difference at the High school level , but he would do a good job ....IMHO.
Re: Wellston Job
I agree with boiler! He still runs the same plays he ran when I played for him and it still seems to work! If we can't get phillips, higher patterson!

Re: Wellston Job
Do people from Wellston ever think about the character of someone who they want as a coach, or do they just want someone from the town who they think knows the game? If my kids played football at Wellston (or anywhere for that matter), I would want someone of high character who would be a good role model for my children and the rest of the kids playing on that team. We need to stop and think that this is a game played by young men who need role models to look up to. It doesn't always matter if you win 10 games or the league or make the playoffs. It matters that we, as adults, provide the guidance to make these young people productive memebers of society. That, my friends is what gets overlooked. I have not read one post on this thread that is concerned about how the next coach at Wellston will treat the young men there. Its' ALL about Wins and Losses folks! I hope this makes some of you think a little about the most important things in life.
Re: Wellston Job
Well when it comes to football everybody wants to win, doesn't matter if the guy is good or bad, if he can win everyone loves him and if he loses everyone thinks hes the worst guy in the world. And thats not just Wellston, thats everywhere! I say hire the coach thats going to get the best out of the players on the field, and wins games!

Re: Wellston Job
I agree, winning is a big part of the puzzle. But, you also need someone who is going to lead the young men in the right direction off the field. Discipline is a large part of success and I have heard (don't know if it's true) that Phillips didn't have great discipline at Oak Hill. Wellston folk seem to defend their own though, so the shortcomings of a coach from Wellston may very well be overlooked if they think that person will lead them to W's. Should be an interesting hiring as I have heard what Boilermaker mentioned previously. . . Interviewing 10 with several being from out of state. I also heard from a very unreliable source that Jim Derrow is interested in the job. I'm sure that is not the case. Has anyone else heard this?
