Excellent question fulltilt! Now I have a good question, too. If a coach is so good, why doesn't he start his best player? I would be interested to hear other people's opinions on this subject.

My comment is a general comment because I don't know the situation. But as a coach myself, I know that there are some players, great player or not, do better when coming off the bench instead of starting! I knew a player once that was a tremendous player and actually was the leading scorer on the team, but when this player started the game, they really struggled for a good part of the 1st half because they would get nervous and not be able to get going right away out on the court. BUT whenever the coach stopped starting this player and started bringing them off the bench, they played great. The reason was this player needed the first few minutes to sit there on the bench, watch how the flow of the game was going, and it gave them time to calm their nerves down watching their teammates get the game going. I know it sounds like a wild story, but it is 100% true! I knew this player very well because they went to my high school when I was in school.

So, this may not answer your question but it might be a possible reason!!

Thank you for your indepth answer but I don't think this scenario applies in this case. This person started for a few games due to an injury to another player and played like a house on fire. Must be some other reason they don't start.

Now do you really think that Coach Hale would be at the local biddee league and junior high tournaments scouting out players to recruit. WHy not just start bringing in high school kids that he knows would be good instead of recruiting players froma young age that you have no clue about how good they are going to be.

I have heard people comparing Oak Hill to Regina in their recruiting issues. How can anyone even compare the two. Regina has players coming in just for their junior and senior years all time. Why because they are already established and Coach Diulus knows what he is getting.

Keep an eye on Kristie Johnson at South Webster.
She has done a great job turning around the program after Mike Hughes left.
Before she retires I think she will be one of the best around.

Can't really say I can see that unless she has a major turn around. She doesn't impress me in the least.

Over the past few seasons, Coach Johnson has taken a team that went 0-20 one season and 1-19 or 2-18 the next, and turned basically that SAME team into one that has won 3 straight District Championships. She must know something about what she's doing***

It was not the same team. That team was missing Cook. She obviously made the world of difference. And then She gained Kara Cayton for one year. So to say it was the same team is wrong. That 1-19 team (in which Johnson coached) had no go-to scorer, which is what Cook brought to the table. Great person, her coaching abilities have yet to be determined.

I guess I just got mixed up in my years...but regardless...I still think she has done a marvelous job...
