Re: D2 SE Tourney
Hopefully we play tomorrow. I'm getting sick of sitting around and all these games stacking up.
Re: D2 SE Tourney
Vinton 7 8 12 13 -- 40
Athens 15 7 9 8 -- 39
Vinton County never had the lead the entire game with any amount of time left on the clock in any quarter. They had fallen behind 15-4 early and the deficit was typically at 4-7 points after the mid-way point of the 2nd quarter. They finally tied it at 37 with 0:35 left. Athens played for the last shot and a foul was called and they went to the line for one and one with 0:02 sec left. Vinton had the ball out after Athens made two FT with 0:02.0 seconds left and Athens had been called for only three fouls in the half. Vinton threw it to a post in the back court about the top of the circle and passed it to a guard breaking down court. She took about one step with each foot across the half court line and let it go a bit before the buzzer and it went directly in the basket after the buzzer. So with no time on the clock the scoreboard showed 37-39, but then the trey was chalked up after it was deemed to be legit, making it the only game I ever saw that a team won in regulation without the scoreboard at any time in regulation showing them ahead!
Even though this was a 7/10 seed game, this is why I like to watch tourney games, with the win or go home on the line with the pressure, intensity, and desire to do well so strong. Even without the miracle finish I enjoyed this game a great deal with Vinton falling behind, then winning every quarter, by a little bit more each quarter, to get back to where a miracle could occur. I thought #3 for Vinton played a very good game coming off the bench. I wish I could call her by name, but they never have programs at this sectional. And had to pay two admissions for games that would have just cost me one last night.

Re: D2 SE Tourney
Her name is Caitlyn Owings, she is a freshman. That guard that hit the three at the buzzer was senior Tori Dixon, a girl that has faced more "junk" defenses in the past two seasons than should be allowed. It was poetic justice tonight.
Re: D2 SE Tourney
Vinton Co 13 10 11 13 - 47
South Pt 13 22 24 19 - 78
Vinton topped their winning score of last night by 7, but didn't end up close. They fell behind early like last night at 11-2. Last night they methodically closed a wider gap and eventually got the lead after the buzzer. Tonight they roared back to take a 13-11 lead, but that was about as long as they were in it as South Point went on a 22-2 run from there. Vinton just gave up too many easy baskets on steal and rebound fast breaks. Kayla Fletcher for South Point stood out to me as an outstanding player.
Warren 7 13 9 5 - 34
Marietta 4 12 18 18 - 52
A hard fought, tough, intense, spirited battle here. Defenses were great. Warren was ahead at half due to breaking down the defense a few times and getting easy baskets, and then taking "on the floor" non-shooting fouls twice when Marietta had them beat for easy lay-ups which the good fouls prevented. The defense on LeAnne Ross was outstanding. She only had one FG in the first half, her only trey, and the only trey of the game. Right off the bat in the 2nd half, Ross ssomehow got the ball up to the rim in the first two possessions on close in shots and they both amazingly went in to tie the game at 20. The teams traded baskets to 26-26, and then Marietta got a defensive combination on the floor, that included seldom used Paige Grosel, that was stifling from the middle of the third quarter until the middle of the 4th quarter when they had built a 40-29 lead. The only scoring play for Warren during that whole time came right after a Warren time out, halfway thru the 3rd qtr, that they called to avoid a 10 sec violation. They broke down the defense and DaShara Morgan got the lay-up and the FT to put Warren up 29-26. Then Marietta scored the next 14 points to take the lead. Ross scored 10 points in each qtr of the 2nd half to have a majority of the Tigers' points in the 2nd half. But the story to me was the defense. And Marietta rebounded very well the entire game, and that helped a lot in the first half to not get behind any further than they did, 20-14 at the worst deficit.

Re: D2 SE Tourney
A hard fought game by the Lady Tigers you could tell they had been out of the gym for awhile due to snowdays. They came out ready for a showdown in the second half lead by LeAnne Ross who sparked the second half swing with a game high of 25 points. The girls fought hard and showed they were the better team!! Marietta's gaurds also did a very good job of the defensive end in the second half. Good Job Tigers!!! Good Luck on Saturday and bring home the sectional championship!!!!
Re: D2 SE Tourney
I wouldn't say that the Tigers were showing the effects of snow days. If you look back at Marietta/Warren girls games for many years, that is not an untypical way a game goes, especially early, with points being hard to come by. The defense really stepped up in that critical part and the rebounding was very good the whole game.
Re: D2 SE Tourney
Not unexpectedly, the MVL teams win both games at Alex:
New Lexngton 15 16 7 10 -- 48
Fairfield Union 4 6 13 20 -- 43
From an 8-0 start, New Lex had this game under control the whole way.
Gallia A 11 14 8 23 -- 56
Sheridan 14 9 16 21 -- 60
Sheridan was good at poking the ball away on perimeter defense, and running the floor for easy baskets. Gallia got their high/low post to post passing game going for some good baskets. Their posts each had 16 points. This game thru 3 quarters saw each team take as much as 6 point leads, and the 3rd qtr ended at 6 in Sheridan's favor. They went to their "lead in the 4th qtr" offense and got several easy baskets to shoot the lead up to 50-38 about mid-way thru the 4th quarter. Then they continued to run that offense very well, but missed several bunnies, while also fouling Gallia many times to let them score with the clock stopped. With just under 2 mins left, Gallia hit a trey to take the lead at 53-52. Sheridan went right down and got a basket to re-take the lead at 54-53. Then on the next possession one of two key mishaps for Gallia happened. They had the ball to inbound under their own basket and the girl trying to pass the ball in was called for walking(going away from the spot) while she was out-of-bounds. Sheridan made two more to get their lead to 56-53, then Gallia hit a trey to tie it at 56. Swinehart made a duece with 20 sec left to give Sheridan a 58-56 lead. Then Gallia ran a double screen in the left corner for a trey attempt that, if it had been good, would have given them the lead with about 5 sec left. Unfortunately, the pass to the intended shooter, slipped thru her hands and OB, so we'll never know if the trey would have gone down. On the throw in, Swinehart was fouled and made both FT to seal the win.

Re: D2 SE Tourney
Who wins between South Point and Sheridan?
I know tournament play is a whole different scene, and everything is on the line. But in season play the Pointers beat Gallia Academy by 30.
Thoughts on the 2/20 matchup?

Re: D2 SE Tourney
I'd have to go with South Point in that one. But by the look of their schedule Sheridan has some up-side. They gave a pretty good D1 Tri-valley team a game late in the year it looks....unless the score is deceiving.

Congrats to the Lady Tigers who won their first sectional championship in years yesterday. The Lady Tigers beat New Lex 63-48. The Tigers played a great game from the start even though New Lex did come back in the second half but the Tigers showed how much they wanted it and went on a 17-0 run. The Tigers were lead by LeAnne Ross with 24pts. Congrats to the Lady Tigers and coaching stafff on a great win. Keep it going Tigers you can do it!!! Good Luck on Thursday!!!
