Here's a thought for everyone to consider. Student-Athletes should just play sports for the enjoyment of it. If they love the game then they should play, be it basketball, football, tennis, soccer, volleyball, or whatever. Because the facts are that a very tiny percentage of kids might, "might" get an opportunity to play D1, D2, D3 sports. Which means that it's likely your child will not play past the age of 18...that is, unless they like to play City Rec, YMCA, or traveling Softball, college intramurals, whatever. Parents and familyt should relax and enjoy the blessings of watching the kids participate. Hate to burst bubbles out there. I know we all hope our kid will be the next ________.

Here's a few scenarios on some Tigers: recently one has made it out West on a D1 team....only to get moved from QB to TE (Best Wishes), another athlete has made it up North looking to play outside linebacker over QB/TE/K or Punter (where he earned All State)...these two kids were superior high school athletes, perhaps the best in this area AND 4.0 GPA as "tops" in class, too. They are now looking to "might" earn a spot on the team. And there's a couple of upcoming Seniors/Juniors at Waverly who have height, straight A's, travel all over the country to play AAU or attend camps .... while getting told by college coaches, "Yes, we like you....you're one of 10 who we are looking at...BUT, we only have 1 scholarship to give...and it probably won't go to you." OR, "We'd love to have you here...you can walk-on and try-out for the team ." OR, "We're a smaller college; we don't give athletic money...only give scholarships for academics....but you can still come here and get your education and play sports, too...
(even though it will cost you $23,000 per year for tuition)."

How discouraging!

So when do we tell our kids? OR, do we tell our kids? At what age do we tell them? ...
What do we tell them? There's no use in getting your hopes up for making it, kid. Just have FUN playing and hanging-out with your teammates; in the bigger picture these will be your best memories.

So, these kids may be heros to the community youngsters, they may be great kids who represent their high schools well, they may be the "hope" of OUR OWN YOUTHFULNESS.
Isn't that enough?

Wishing our kids the very best in making their dreams come true!
And if they are fortunuate to be "that one" who makes it to the next level then we will all celebrate!

Nice post moontang- Waverly has Kretzer, Martin, and Kelly returning and all three looked good over in Athens as well as Capital camp. The Tigers season will depend upon what type of supporting cast comes from the other two spots and I feel fairly good after seeing them play. No matter how you look at it they have had a very good summer. They went something like 11-2 at Capital and 14-5 at OU. The bright spot to me is that they did this while some of the kids playing didnt exactly know what they were doing ...so... i think once they are coached for a while they will be fine.

As far as what MoonTang said- hey I have always felt that High School coaches are some-what guilty of telling kids "If you want to play on the next level" a little to much. I don't think you take your kids all over the country playing AAU basketball or sending them to 20 football camps to get them ready to play college I honestly feel that the only reason you should support them going everywhere is so they can be the "BEST HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER" they can possibly be- and if something happens that they get something after high school then that is great but dont put the pressure on them that they have to get something because that makes it rough on them!

Which brings me to my final point: Waverly High School coaches.... We are so lucky here that the coaches have no problem sharing athletes. I have heard Rusty on several occasions tell his players to play everything and I know he has supported Kelly and Kretzer play AAU when they have missed some football things- I have watched Travis many times support Harrison go to baseball clinics and things while he has had basketball things going on- and I know Coach Noble allowed Roback and Walls to do things for football during baseball and if they want to continue to have the best athletes play more than one sport this type of support from all the coaches is the only way.

Thoughts???

haha well my thoughts on this coming basketball season is that they only need to put one player on the cort and thats the one the only David Holt hes a trick shot macheian he will drain 3's in all the opsosing players eyes cause david holt makes it rain, but in all honesty holt is a very good player and from wat iv herd hes getting looked at by uk
Ha Ha way to get a rumor started "I love waverly". But in all honesty, Holt is a very good ball player that Waverly and the rest of the town overlook too much. Maybe if the coach could put this kid in more and give him more confidence, UK really would be looking at him. Yeah, hes that good.

Portsmouth is going to have a nice squad but why wouldn't Waverly really test its team and play an opponent from outside the state that has recent state tournament success? Waverly is playing Portsmouth and Chillicothe is playing a team from Gary Indiana? Its not a knock on the team, Just curious because Waverly will have a nice team next year.

Hey, Travis likes to play tough teams, even though getting Portsmouth is just a thing that probably happened out of our control. That being said, if I were Travis I would drop a lot of teams on our schedule and only play DivII teams because at tourney draw time other coaches just dont give you credit for who you beat like they should. Last year, I thought the best win we had on the year was beating Chesapeak- but would we gotten more respect beating someone in Division II like Miami Trace?

Our league forces us to play some Div III schools and Webster, and the Holiday classic we will always get Eastern or Western- I would never play anyone non league unless they were Div II, no matter how good they were... I mean I would load up with Miami Trace, Hillsboro, Wash CH, Jackson, Circleville, Gallipolis, Athens, Unioto..... and forget anyone not a big school.

I understand that coaches think you get better by playing better people - but it dont do you much good when you go to the draw and other coaches say "Waverly beat Chesapeak, Wheelersburg, Piketon but we beat Hillsboro and Unioto.... - listen Portsmouth is loaded this year and Chesapeak and Piketon were loaded last year- do we really get the credit we deserve by beating very good basketball teams regardless of their Division. If we could somehow beat Portsmouth and Piketon this year those teams are better than the Division II teams that I listed but with our draw set up we should just concentrate on nothing but wins! Just my opinion- but I would like to know what others think. Waverly has a very tough schedule and if you think about it they did pick up Wash CH which is Division II but the problem is they dont even have a home game until the Holiday Classic- they better start off ready to go!

The schedule Waverly has this season is the toughest in recent memory regardless of what division other schools are in. There's something to be said about beating D2 teams and how that looks for the tournament draw but when they are no where near the talent of a D3 team we beat I don't see the comparison. Beating a quality D3 team should carry more weight then beating an average to poor D2 team. So what if you beat Unioto or Hillsboro or Washington Court House or Circleville or Jackson if they are .500 ball teams. Beating Chesapeake at the convo early in the season was huge. Didn't they make the final 4?

Will we see any new faces on the court this year?

I hear Waverly was dropped by Chillicothe this upcoming season and picked up by Ironton.

I just heard that today as well. Was told that Travis asked for Chilly's schedule so he could plan what games to scout before the Tigers hook up with them. When he got the schedule Waverly was not on it. He called and was advised by the Chilly AD that Coach K dropped the Tigers. I guess they are so good this year they don't want to play lowly Waverly, lol. I don't know the reasoning for dropping Waverly but at least have the courtesy to call and let em know.

I was also told Waverly picked up a 3 year contract with Ironton with the Tigers from Lawrence County traveling to Waverly this year. Word is Ironton has one of the better teams they've had in a while.
Rather than replace Chilly with an easier game Travis goes for the best in the area.

Its a good thing to play a tough schedule. I watched Coach Lisath of Piketon come in and play and scrimmage DI and DII schools that I know we never would've played or thought about playing prior to his arrival. The Final four team beat like 6 DII teams that year and like 5 league champions. This year we have Columbus Mifflin, Zanesville, Vinton County, Greenfield and may see the Tigers in the Holiday Classic. I once heard him on the radio say "if we can't beat them...it will show us how good we need to be"

One was coming but was not accepted. He ended up going to Piketon. Pretty good player from what I hear, possibly starting for the Redstreaks.
