Head Wrestling Coach Interview

Post by TakedownFor2 »

What are some questions one could expect to hear at an interview for a head wrestling coach position?

The main question will be on your philosophy about cutting weight. Otherwise, most schools in the area are less interested in you binging an Olympic champion and more on your ethics and moral positions positions regarding the sport and working with kids. In other words, a guy could have been a four-time state champion but if he is a jerk what would be the point.

LOL. The main question is your philosphy of cutting weight??? I thought this was a question about a wrestling job. The first question better be what do you know about the sport of wrestling and how can you make these kids better wrestlers. Not weight cutters.

Well, I thought that was understood. Why would a guy apply if he didn't know anything about wrestling? My point was that they are not going to sit there and ask a guy how good he was when he wrestled. But since you know so much about how to interview wrestling coaches, maybe you should enlighten us all on what may be asked during an interview. Or maybe you could enlighten us on the proper techniques of getting kids to wrestle for you from neighboring districts without calling it recruiting. Now whom is laughing out loud?

Good point-by both!
The individual wrestler is going to cut weight at his own discretion in most cases. There are too many variables to give an absolute number of pounds due to size/percentage of fat etc. Somewhat of a rhetorical question until more questions follow. (Which will happen!)
I have only assisted in the past-far past-but do know that motivational recruiting is one of the most important individual factors of BUILDING a program. Start attracting the young, finish with wisdom.
I see Mr. Yinger from Nelsonville as being a good role model for a coach.
JMHO. :)
Good luck to all, and in improving the sport as a whole. :)

Cutting weight philosophy was asked in my interview. My school wants to see more football players on the mat. They feel that cutting weight is turnning away alot of guys from coming out.

Easy answer Your aloud to wrestle at 7% body fat and no lower, I am not asking a kid to do anything that a doctor says is not safe. Weight cutting is up to the wrestlers to figure out. I don't make anybody cut. There are rules in place 7% and no lower. Coal miner I am laughing even harder over the last post. Called open enrollment. Thanks. My kids spend alot of time in the wrestling room. moving from one district to another does not make you a better wrestler nor does cutting weight. A good work ethic and time on the mat.

Big_One Jealous??? WOW. Graham flat out has maybe one kid, if that, from St Paris Graham. The rest are from all over, even out of state (more that a couple, several). Last I heard this is Ohio. O'crap, this isn't even worth it. If a program has a history of being good and it is made known that there is a spot for you and Ohio does have open enrollment (even though you have to sit out a year, unless you are a entering freshman) All you need is to establish a address, well........ things happen. This has happened in all sports, at Athens a few years ago in Volleyball, Morgan to Desales in wrestling, and that is just two local, it has to be going on all over. So what is the solution? By allowing this the State of Ohio allowing for the creation of super sports schools, but resident kids will suffer. O,well get off my soap box.
Tally Ho All. And I am not jealous of Graham, maybe alittle envious that my school doesn't have Jordon as coach. HaHa, alittle humor here...

1. How can you improve the program?
2. What is your philosophy on coaching wrestling?
3. What are the goals for you program?
4. How will you increase numbers in the program and keep wrestlers out?
5. What will your policy be for kids that break the rules?
6. How will you discourage weight cutting?
7. How will you get the parents involved?
