Gallipolis 23 Vinton County 13 (5 innings)

Vinton County led 13-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, and was within two outs of a mercy win over Gallipolis.

The Blue Devils rallied for 21 runs and the game ended when John Troester hit a grand slam over the left field fence. There was still just one out when the game ended. At least 22
batters batted for GAHS in the bottom of the fifth.

The 21 runs in one inning may be a state record. Have not seen anything like that in more then 50 years What a way to end Blue Devil history on Memorial Field after 60 years.

GAHS improved to 16-7 and will play the winner of the Athens-Marietta game on Thursday on the road. Vinton County bowed out with a 13-15 record.

It's the Blue Devils version of the seventh inning stretch. They have been doing it all year. And each time afterward, the Blue Devils have put on a good rally like tonight's 21-run outburst after one was out. Just a bunch of kids having a good timd at the ole ball game.

13 hits, 4BB, 2HBP, an error (another error in the OF allowed runners to advance) and a Fielder's Choice that pulled the catcher off the plate scored the 21 runs. Only a ball hit at sharply to the right of the 1B was questionably a hit, off of 4 Viking pitchers- Without a barrage of walks or errors it is inconceivable that all of that could happen the way the game had gone to that point. Wow...

Regarding records, senior shortstop Andy Grillo of Vinton County was 4-4 with 4 runs scored, giving him 62 on the season- setting a new single season record in the state of Ohio. Grillo has 59 hits this year, along with 17 BB's for an OB% of .670, also has over 50 stolen bases while hitting over .600. What a season, and a career for Andy. His average, runs, hits, and stolen bases for his career rank high on the all time lists.

Amazing. Can you call it a "heartbreaking loss" when you get mercy ruled?

What an amazing inning! I was at the mundane Athens/Marietta game. Seems like going to Gallia or Warren would have been much more interesting!

It will be quite a story to tell about the final game at the Gallia field, right down to the last inning, the last pitch, and the last ball sailing out for a grand slam!

Quite interesting about Andy Grillo and his career and great season. Just curious about how many of his 59 hits were for extra bases?

Great post by Gary Redus as he answered all the questions that came to my mind about that half inning when I read the posts above, even down to how many errors there were that caused not getting an out opposed to the errors that aren't so bad by only allowing base advances. And also accounting for how every runner got on base, and how many pitchers there were.

I want to go to a game Thursday, weather permitting. I'm wondering if the best baseball to take in would be Gallia at Athens, or Waverly at Warren. At Warren last week for the DOC was pretty good with both softball and baseball in intense 7th innings at the same time. So I'll probably go there.

mhs- Grillo has 19 extra base hits, obviously anything he hits on the ground is a close play at first and he bunts well. Figuring walks and on by error, he has reached base 84 times.
