Vinton County's Andy Grillo
Vinton County's Andy Grillo will continue his baseball career at Capital University. Andy has left an indelible mark on the Vinton County High School Records Book, but his accomplishments have their mark on the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Records Book.
Andy was a four-year starter for the Vikings either at shortstop or toeing the rubber. However, as a lead-off hitter, it is his abilities in the box and on the base paths that will set Andy apart.
In his senior season he has amassed impressive numbers:
Games: 28
At Bats: 97
Runs: 62
Singles: 44
Doubles: 11
Triples: 3
Home Runs: 3
Runs Batted In: 26
Strikeouts: 6
Base on Balls: 17
Stolen Bases: 53
Average: .610
For his career:
Games: 94
At Bats: 318
Runs: 135
Singles: 110
Doubles: 35
Triples: 7
Home Runs: 5
Runs Batted In: 76
Strikeouts: 29
Base on Balls: 42
Stolen Bases: 114
Average: .493
Holds school records for hits, average, runs, stolen bases in a season and a career. His state record book accomplishment include:
10 consecutive hits (2 different times)
First with runs in a season 62, 11th in a career 135.
5th with hits in a season 61, 16th in a career 157
5th with 53 stolen bases in a season, 8th in a career 114
23rd with an average in a season .610, and 25th in a career with an average .493

Reached base safely in all 28 games this season, he has only failed to reach base in 7 games throughout his career.
He has been first team All-TVC and All Southeast District all four years.
Has been selected to the All-Mizuno team
Academic All-Ohio candidate, ranks third in his class.
The kid is going to be missed. Good Luck Andy! And Go Crusaders!

Anyone who has watched him play any sport knows how fast he is, so it is shocking that with those ballooned numbers he isn't going D1.

Re: Vinton County's Andy Grillo
I spoke to Andy last night at a little graduation get-together here in VC and came away again absolutely amazed at just how humble Andy is in all of his accomplishments.
He will be sorely missed here at Vinton County not just in baseball, but on the FB field and on the BkB court as well.
He is a very gifted athlete and I really hate to see him leave. But, VC's loss is Capital's gain. I am sure he will do himself and his alma mater proud when he takes the baseball field next year.
Andy, good of luck to you, Andy, in your future endeavors and thanks for the last four years of memories.

Very well said Bubba. It makes me feel really old, but I remember when I just started my career in McArthur and used to eat lunch with Andy's dad in the diner. In fact, me, Bob, and some guy named Bruce ate lunch just days after Andy came home from the hospital...how time fly's.
Andy has been a complete champion, both on & off the field/court throughout his entire career at VC. He's been an absolute joy to watch, and I wish him very best in college.

Kenny, yes. Andy is the son of the Honorable N. Robert and Penny (Dailey) Grillo. And no, he will be 19 in August. Dude, seriously, you need help.

Re: Vinton County's Andy Grillo
I played my whole career at VC with Andy. All the way from third grade (Andy was in second grade), until i graduated. Andy is a remarkable athlete and it always seemed no matter what I did at the plate or in the field Andy would always do something better. Andy is not only a great player he is a great friend too. He is one of those players that makes everyone around him perform better.
Andy also seems to be one of those players that always catches that lucky break. His senior year stats and my senior year stats are pretty close except I had 8 strike out and only batted .261. Too many linedrives right at everyone. But it happens. Andy I know you will be very successful at Capital and maybe we will see each other next year on opposing teams. That would be something new for both of us.

Excellent article written by Paul Boggs on Andy Grillo today in the Sunday Athens Messenger and the Sunday Jackson County Times-Journal detailing his three sport and academic careers.

I think the big guy in the back row is none other then Terry "Pup Dawg" Hale, one of the many volunteers that does a lot of thankless tasks for many of the VC sports programs, including taking care of the wonderful baseball field at the HS. Also, the guy in the front row(one with glasses) helps too. But he has a tendency to catch equipment of fire, so they've limited him to non motorized tools.
