Re: Athens American Legion Post 21
H.S. sports coverage in Athens county for the 2009-2010 season was inadequate, to say the least, especially after The Messenger stopped using Bulldog's free lance work to fill in the gaps. It is truly a shame.
It was not only local sports coverage, but overall local news coverage in general that has been lacking. You can't run a seven day a week local newspaper with a skeleton crew to cover all the local news, events, and sports.
I'm afraid the local newspaper is going to go the way of polaroid film and video rental stores. It is a woefully outdated business model that will become extinct with all of the other mediums available to get state and local news, for free no less.........

Dead on SD. Sad but true. I guess that's why my Messenger subscription rate goes down every year and the advertising rate just gets cheaper and cheaper...
By the way, I'm selling all my Beta tapes (switching to the new VHS format) if anybody is interested I can mail them a photo taken with my new instant camera. It's amazing, just point, click and out pops a photo you can look at in less than 2 minutes...

Re: Athens American Legion Post 21
I was looking at a bunch of old articles my mom kept from when I played football, basketball & baseball for Athens (and Post 21) and the sports page for the Messenger was waaaaaay different than it is now .... the sports page was at least 4-to-5 pages long, and that was every day ... every Athens American Legion game was covered - almost all of which was written by Tom Metters ... I even came across a stack of cut-out-articles from when I was in Little League - they actually had short write-ups covering the "County League" baseball program that use to be in existence in Athens County.
BUT - one attribute Steely Dan and others probably wouldn't like is that the Messenger use to be ATHENS DOMINATED ... When the paper started covering all 5 county schools I don't know exactly, but all the articles/full papers I have been reading the last few days from 1990-1993 was almost all Athens ... Tom had a "game preview" every Thursday before Athens football games, every Athens game was covered and had a huge spread on the cover of the Sunday Messenger every week.
I know its not the guys who work at the Messenger now fault - if it were up to them - there would be 3-to-4 pages of sports every day ... But the yahooos who own the paper - in Texas I believe it is - don't give a crap about Athens Ohio or its residents ... The Athens Messenger is still in business though (and probably will be for awhile) because it possess the only LARGE PRINTING PRESS in the immediate area ... the Plains location prints about 6 different newspapers that I know of (Gallia's paper, Logan's, Waverly, Jackson, Circleville & the Messenger) ... as long as those papers stay in business, the Messenger will continue to limp on ...
The only thing we can hope for is that all those papers (which are all owned by the same corporation) start showing more of a profit ... if that happens, perhaps the Messenger will bring back the part-time sports reporter position (which they did away with last fall) ... people didn't really notice at the time - since the guy who had the position taken away from him agreed to keep working as much as they needed him too - but for a lot less money and no gas allowance.
Of course, most folks know that mid-way through this past hoops season that 'hard working, dedicated, handsome fella' had to take a leave of absense from the Messenger & the two guys remaining (who are full-time paid employees) agreed to try and take up the slack during the spring and summer unitl the fella (who had to take some time off) could return.
Will there always be a shortage of coverage? probably - there just isn't enough space given to the sports dept. ... But come fall, things should be a lot better with 3 guys (plus Tom Metters) all back working together.
Then of course - you have trivalleyconference.com in existence now and the plan is to keep improving the site and add new stuff constantly ... maybe between the two (The web site and the Messenger), all the sports coverage a person in Southeastern Ohio could ever want will be available.

Bulldog93 - I knew that the staff was not the problem, it is the corporate stuffed shirts that have run local newspapers in the ground.
As I alluded to in my prior post, the way that we gather, read, absorb, and provide feedback to the news (local, state, and federal level) is changing drastically, and alot of folks in the print business are sitting there watching the world go by. I realize it, GW does as well, and alot of other folks. As I had mentioned, other mediums are now available to deseminate information and the readers to consume the product, e.g. trivalleyconference.com. Your website is a PERFECT example that will make the local newspaper a dinosaur, and eventually, extinct.
Thanks for your support of the local kids and all that you do on your website. It is truly appreciated!

GREAT JOB P-21!
Got a big one Thursday Vs the Big Boys, who reside north of the Lancaster-Dixon line - I might have to go and get my first look at the 2010 version of K.T. Crossen Post 21.
Good luck G.W. and keep up the outstanding work.

Re: Athens American Legion Post 21
Thanks GW, it was an absolute pleasure to be there tonight, I had a great time and really enjoyed the game. Once again, the men of Post 21 play hard, and play with class.
Just wish we would have had more time to talk, but we will take care of that later. I see a court date in the future with you, the book keeper, and the coaches.......We can certainly catch up, it is long overdue.
Men of Post 21 beat the daylights out of the ball tonight, great job! Keep it up tomorrow against Lancaster. If mother nature cooperates, I'll be there to see you play on Friday against Logan. Had a great time tonight hanging out with Catch One and another Post 21 Dad.
And like I told you tonight GW, I couldn't find that last box of polaroid film, otherwise, Coach Bean would have been accosted by the paparazzi tonight Photos of Coach Bean in that fashionable helmet are in high demand.......
