Better have the grades to go with the athletic ability, or not many colleges will even give players a look. The game is played at a faster pace and you have to adjust in a second, to the situation.

Nice post zebra77. I have talked to several head coaches at the next level. That is almost the first thing they ask, what is his/hers grade point average. They say that they can teach a smart athlete, the not so smart ones with awesome God given skills, usually flunk out or on the can't play because of being ineligible because of their grades. A lot of the players drop out of school, because of this
You can have a player that just dominates the other players he/she play against in High School in our area. When they go to the college level, they are playing against other team mates that are the just as great, or even better, as they are. It is kind of like the Big fish in a little pond, to going to a ocean where all the players are as big and better than they are. The competition is very fierce for every starting position. A lot of them drop out, they just can not handle the difference and the transition from High School level of play, to faster pace of play at the College level.
This is my opinion. It not aimed at any High School player, it is a general observation. It is just the real truth. A lot of people do not understand what it involves playing at the next level in all the divisions of College Football. It really is a job, and they have to put all their efforts into playing and keeping the grades up. A lot of players do not know how to handle the life style changes it takes to play at the College level.
I have seen a lot of great players in High School players in our area, go on to play at the College level. Some have been successful, but also some of the great ones have quit. I wish all the players who have a chance to play at the next level, all the best. It is awesome to see our local players have a lot of success in their College Careers. Take advantage of you God given talents, but also use your brain and get that diploma. That is the biggest goal you all should aim for. Tanks and Good Luck 1974 Viking

I agree with you there.
Playing college sports at all levels is like having a job in addition to the school work. I played a year of college football (that had the greatest idea ever, 3-a-days) and the coaches acted like they owned me. I missed weightlifting for football because I was wrestling and the O-Line coach told me that I would never start because I missed weightlifting, even though the weightlifting program for wrestling was much more intense than anything for football. So I said something along the lines of "forget this" and stopped playing football.

looks like your Football Coach had a ego problem, lol. It would seem like he would have realized that the wrestling program would benefit you as a Football Player. It is kind of like some Coaches in High School these days, want their players to only play the sport they Coach. It does happen, and a lot more than people want to admit. Just from my own personnal experience.
