Re: Wellston Basketball
So, in your opinion, its all about talent? If that's the case then why would you even need a coach? You seem to be pretty defensive about protecting the coaching staff rather then just admitting the facts. Every school district goes through periods of less then desirable "talent" but good programs usually find a way to be competitive, mainly because their coaching staff understands how to get the most out of their kids.@nd_1 wrote:The problem is talent. No coach can win without talent, and Wellston has had a dry spell of no "true" basketball players for the last 5 or 6 years.
@nd 1....take a look around the SE District. Great coaches like Norm Persin, Matt Combs, Larry Jordan, Tom Barrick, Rick Van Metter, Gary Kellough, and Jim Osborne have all gone through stretches where they might not have the "talent" yet still produce a respectable record. It's because they work hard and know how to embrace and teach their kids.
Like Run Bubba Run asked , I'm curious as to why you think Wellston has fallen on such pathetic times? Lack of talent is a poor excuse.....at best. The days of Estonia are long gone.

Ty is spot on. I don't think that we will hear a rebuttal.Ty Webb wrote:So, in your opinion, its all about talent? If that's the case then why would you even need a coach? Re: Wellston Basketball
rebuttal: All schools that were just mentioned are purely basketball first schools, with the exeption of wheelersburg. Norm always had talent, jordan didn't do so hot in his last years at southeastern because of the low talent, osborne didn't have success in his last couple years. mcclain always has talent. The kids from those schools play year round because that is the main sport. Recently, the kids at Wellston do not play basketball unless its basketball season. In the offseason they are focused on football and baseball only. When coach derrow had success, the kids were playing basketball all year long. Also, those schools you mentioned all have great recreation programs. Wellston's has fallen off greatly in the last decade or so due to whatever reason. Put any of those coaches at Wellston, they would have no more wins then Coach Derrow. Just my two cents.

I beg to differ. And my response will only further divide the two communities and cause to be smite"d" by the great smite "ter" of this forum. Therefore, I am ignoring the invitation to engage in the negativity, despite the best attempts.
