Didn't Cambel memorial and JFK play each other in 89? Anyone remember the score or outcome?

The 2000 Portsmouth Trojans. No state title but, certainly one of the better teams from this area.

Why of course it's Ironton. They are the best team on the planet and could beat the Cowboys from the Staubach days. There has never been and will never be another team to compare to those mighty, mighty Tigers. We all bow down in shame because we aren't worthy of even being in their presence. We are all mere mortals in the presence of Gods. Their aura blinds me and makes me twinge in anticipation of seeing them run on the field. Every other team in the state, or the entire country for that matter, are just pee wees in comparison.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.

But as much as I hate to admit it, even talking to players from the 89 Burg team. Ironton was the team that season. No way Ironton would've lost that one.

I'd pick Ironton 89

Actually the best all time team in "southern" Ohio would probably be one of the Moeller teams or it could be the CAPE teams with Carlos Snow and Vinnie Clark. The last time I looked at a map Cincinnati was in "southern" Ohio.

1. I know a lot of DA BURG boys from that team and they were all very humble and quiet types of boys. Of course they wouldn't say they were better.

2. They didn't even play Ironton that year so how would they know Ironton was "the team" that season? They were no more than spectators just like the rest of us and gave their typically modest answers to your questions in all likelihood.

Bottom line.... everybody has their opinion but nobody will ever know which team was better.

I assume we're talking about individual teams and not programs...

I have to disagree about the 89 Ironton team being the best. Yes, they won a title but I think that the 78, 81, and 88 Ironton teams were definitely better. Plus an argument could be made that several other Ironton teams were better, including 85, 92, and 93.

Always wondered about the 89 vs 92 Ironton teams but then again what seperates it I think is the offensive line from 1989 and the backfield, with absolutely all due respect the 89 team could have competed with any team in the state that year...they were that good! Maybe some forget Coffman, Cyrus, Conwell, Brownstead, Pleasant and the list goes on and on. No respect but I seen the 89 burg team as well and while they were good for there div they were not ever coming close to matching up with the Ironton speed or size. That was particularly @ a time period where the seperation between Ironton and other surrounding programs was @ the most distant point, no dis to the 89 wheelersburg team...BUT.....NAH! Also I am sure Logan fans remember that 89 Ironton team and Delandual Conwell and Heath Brownsted quite well behind that massive o line right 87 chieftan? The Cape team is a good argument because the talent was superior but I recall watching that team get beat by Ironton right in front of Earl Bruce...now ofcourse they beat Ironton good a couple times as well but we ran right with them. The 89 Wheelersburg team would have not been able to play with Cape or Hamilton Badin or St. Clairsville or even Ashland from that time....no offense intended but it is just two different levels of talent. Wheelersburg were champs in their div but cmon....not taking away from them cause that is a great accomplishment but comparing their 89 team to Irontons is a disservice to them.

I played for Coach Lutz in the 90's and he told us that the best team he ever coached was the 88 team, so that is my choice.

88 team basically consisted of same players, state runner ups that year.

Maybe not the best in southern Ohio history but the 93 Vikings were pretty darn good.

Never convince me Big Orange. This isn't a contest to see who knows more Burg boys from that season, but anytime that conversation comes up. Humble or not, they say no way! But Anything could happen as it did that season. We'll never know, but I'll take my answers from the ones I know to say Ironton 89!
